"Following a firestorm over his recent comments about Sarah Palin, the MSNBC host Martin Bashir resigned on Wednesday, citing what he called his “ill-judged comments.”

Mr. Bashir had been listed as being on vacation while the network faced heated criticism for not taking disciplinary action against him.

The decision was prompted by a commentary Mr. Bashir directed last month against Ms. Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential nominee, in which he criticized her for statements comparing American debt to slavery, saying she deserved the same kind of humiliating and degrading treatment that some slaves faced.

Mr. Bashir later issued an apology on the air for the commentary. He then left for what was called a vacation.

In a statement the network released on Wednesday, Mr. Bashir said he had asked permission to take additional time around Thanksgiving. That led, he said, to “further reflection” and a meeting with Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC. Following that meeting, Mr. Bashir said, “I have tendered my resignation.”

He added that he hoped the network would be allowed to “focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself, or my ill-judged comments.”

Mr. Griffin issued a statement saying: “I understand his decision and I thank him for three great years with MSNBC. Martin is a good man and respected colleague — we wish him only the best.”

Mr. Bashir, who first established a career in television in Britain, joined MSNBC from ABC News in 2010. He had been suspended once while at ABC for making comments considered crude and sexist at a dinner for Asian-American journalists."

Well, another ranting lunatic gone from MSNBC. The parent company Comcast would be far better off financially if they just scrapped the entire MSNBC "news" line-up and went instead with 24 hours a day of their investigative shows like Lock-Up, To Catch A Predator, Caught On Camera, Sex Slaves In America, etc.

Had anyone at FOX said something remotely similar about Hillary or Nancy Pelosi, the NOW gang would have been having protests in the streets 24/7.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

I don't think any FOX News hosts have ever been suspeneded, I know MSNBC has suspeneded Baldwin, Scraboro, Olbermann, (who's insane) Shuster and "Mr Ed" Shultz.

It seems to me there had to be some unusual pressure on MSNBC to take this action. They would not have first made him apologize and then resign if the complaints were just coming from conservative sources. Normally they would just ridicule any conservative complaints and then double-down with their attacks. That's also what Obama always does. So I'm thinking that maybe the call to can Bashir came from within the liberal ranks themselves.

I had almost forgotten about David Shuster on MSNBC. He had to apologize multiple times for accusing the Clintons of "pimping out Chelsea" during Hillary's 2008 campaign.

KPO

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

I don't think anyone here is shedding a tear over this guy.

It's not personal. It's just war.

How this guy wasn't canned , on the spot, for such vulgar and gross comments, only goes to show what msnbc is all about. It took pressure from the public for them to do the right thing. Not unlike the San Diego mayor who finally was forced to resign.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

"I don't think anyone here is shedding a tear over this guy." Damned straight, KPO. I didn't read any of the other comments, as I can pretty much already guess what they are. I only watched Bashir once, didn't like him, never watched him again. I think what he said was despicable.
