The Republican National Committee has clarified a tweet that erroneously declared racism over.

The original message, published on Sunday, was meant to commemorate the 58th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Instead, it suggested that the civil rights movement Parks was part of ultimately ended racism.

The original tweet: "Today we remember Rosa Parks’ bold stand and her role in ending racism."

The tweet — which included (the above) quote from Parks — did not sit well with many Twitter users, who responded with a mix of snark and sarcasm:

"Oh racism ended. Thanks for the update!"

"...ending racism." Not."

"Seriously?“

"RACISM IS OVER?! *ENTERS BASS PRO SHOP TO SEE IF IT'S TRUE*"

"Why is this upsetting people? Racism IS over; I've never suffered from it in my life."

"GOP It's ok, we don't need you winning an election anytime soon anyway. Keep up the thoughtful tweets."

The RNC clarified its tweet several hours later, though it did not delete the original:
Quote:

Previous tweet should have read "Today we remember Rosa Parks' bold stand and her role in fighting to end racism."

I don't think this needs the 'clarification' they gave it. It's pretty clear - it's just wrong.

One could kindly interpret it to mean that the process of "ending" is still on-going.

Good public relations shouldn't require kindly interpretations, though. It's an incredible invitation for mockery.

So blacks still have to sit in the back of the bus? And they can't use the same restrooms and water fountains as whites? Or the same restaurants and hotels? or go to the same schools?

Ms. Parks, and the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins, and the Freedom Riders, and many other folks ended institutional racism - the racism ingrained in law and custom - in the U.S.

Some individuals will be racists as long as there are racial differences, but the courage of Ms. Parks and many others removed racism from the laws of the land.

Strange that you can't acknowledge this.

Perhaps your tendency to overly sweeping statements is what got your argument in trouble. The racism ingrained in law - when color is spelled out specifically - may be over. The racism ingrained in law that uses other markers - like the modern day poll tax - aka voter ID - is not. Even less firmly in the past is the racism ingrained in custom.

Yeah, that was pretty stupid statement.........it's like:

Racism ended when Bubba blew his sax on stage (that was a sarcastic tweet I saw today mocking the RNC's dumb tweet)

Racism ended when the Jeffersons moved on up....
Racism ended when Mr. Drummond adopted Arnold and Willis...

You get the picture.

I'm old enough to have seen bathrooms and water fountains labeled "Black" and "White", and to have gone to segregated schools. The makeup of the groups of kids I see walking home from school today, and the diversity of folks in my neighborhood, tells me that those days are past.

I'm sure that there are racists in the U.S., but their power has waned to the point where they are figures of embarrassment rather than the figures of fear they were for so many years.

I understand that some folks have to keep the racist America stereotype up so they can paint folks who don't agree with them as racist, but that's more politics than reality.

Horse shit Geezer.

One need only look at the GOP and listen to their bullshit babble for fifteen minutes to know this issue is far, far from over.
Of course, if they *HAD* anything to offer minorities it'd be a different story, but these days it's all they can do to trot out a few offensively stereotypical uncle toms doing the old negro shuffle, like Herman Cain, and seriously, that was just downright embarassing.

Me, I favor simply IGNORING race instead of making it a factor whatever, but alas no one else seems on board with that notion.

And someone who lived during slavery would probably think that segregated schools and separate water fountains proved that racism was over. They'd still be wrong.

Republicans don't pay little attention to minorities because they're minorities, but because they're overwhelmingly Democrats. That's the point of voter ID as well - not because they're prejudiced against minorities, students, and the elderly, but that those groups are mostly Democratic voters. (Then again, Chris Christie did pretty well among Hispanic voters in N.J., so maybe he's showing the way)

Of course the Democrats will play the race and minority cards for all they're worth, so as to keep these folks on their side. You can pretty much see that in the comments here of folks who really want to portray America as racist so they can blame it on someone.

Your bias is amazing, and despicable. Why is it then that so many racist statements come from Republicans? If they're not racist, why do they say the things they do?

Loy Mauch, Republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives: “… If slavery were so God-awful, why didn’t Jesus or Paul condemn it, why was it in the Constitution and why wasn’t there a war before 1861?"

Jon Hubbard, Arkansas Republican: “… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.”

Or the attendee at the Republican National Convention who threw nuts at a black camerawoman: “This is how we feed animals.”

Over and over, Republicans haven't just "paid little attention" to minorities, they have quite clearly made statements that are quite clearly racist. How you can pretend that's not so is incredible.

As Colin Powell said: "When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. "

Even Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Colin Powell and a Republican, admitted it: "“My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people, not all of them, but most of them, who are still basing their decision on race. Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists. And the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander-in-chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin. And that’s despicable.”

I could go on putting up racist images like the above all day, and they come from Republicans; to pretend that isn't so is ridiculous. Like this, from Jennifer Olsen, chairwoman of the Yellowstone County Republicans:

Racial hatred is alive and well in America, that's simply a fact:

As to: "That's the point of voter ID as well - not because they're prejudiced against minorities, students, and the elderly, but that those groups are mostly Democratic voters." -- So you're admitting that they're willing to pass laws to limit their constitutional right to vote. Certainly it's been admitted before, BY REPUBLICANS:
Quote:

“There’s no doubt that what the Republican led legislature in Florida and Governor Scott are trying to do is make sure the Republican party has an advantage in this upcoming election by reducing early voting and putting roadblocks up for potential voters, Latinos, African Americans to register and then to exercise their right to vote. There’s no doubt. I was in the room. It’s part of the strategy. And if they’ve got to change a few voter laws and make it more difficult for minority voters to get to the polls, well they’re going to do it. “I sat in on many meetings where it was discussed ....And part of those discussions dealt with changing the election laws in Florida.

"And three and a half years as chairman of Florida, I never had one meeting where voter fraud was discussed as a real issue effecting elections. Never one time…Never one time did we have any discussions where voter fraud was a real issue. It’s simply been created as a marketing tool here in Florida for the right wing that is running state government now to convince voters that what they’re doing is right. It’s a marketing tool. That’s clearly what it is. There’s no validity to it. We never had issues with it. ” Jim Greer, former Florida GOP Chairman http://gopquotes.wordpress.com/category/racism/

My bias? When I say that there are racists in the U.S. but the vast majority of people aren't, and the vast majority either distain racists or pity them for their ignorance?

I know there are folks who are racist, or at least make racist remarks. We have one here in D.C.

Quote:

OVER THE YEARS, Marion Barry has said and done so many questionable things that the city whose politics he long dominated has become inured to his behavior. But his racist remarks this week about Asian Americans — and his oblivious response — are too ugly to ignore. On Tuesday Ward 8 Democrats looked past his failings to nominate him to a third consecutive term on the D.C. Council, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the District and its political leaders should excuse his behavior.

Mr. Barry used the occasion of a victory party Tuesday to make this ignorant observation: “We’ve got to do something about these Asians coming in, opening up businesses, those dirty shops. They ought to go, I’ll just say that right now, you know.” The bigoted remarks were picked up by WRC-TV cameras and, fortunately, sparked a fair amount of outrage. Among those objecting, to their credit, were Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown (D). They made clear, as the mayor put it, that “there is no room in this wonderfully diverse city for comments that disparage anyone on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, creed, disability or sexual orientation.”

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2012-04-05/opinions/35451385_1_asia
n-american-marion-barry-racist-remarks

and...

Quote:

For the second time in less than a month, D.C. Council member Marion Barry is having to fend off criticism that he unfairly singled out an ethnic group as he attempted to explain how to get more African Americans trained and employed in the District.

At a hearing Monday on the University of the District of Columbia’s budget, he spoke about the need to train more African Americans to become nurses. In a video of his remarks aired by WTTG-TV, Barry noted a growing number of nurses are “immigrants” from the Philippines.

f you go to the hospital now, you’ll find a number of immigrants who are nurses, particularly from the Philippines,” said Barry (D-Ward 8). “And no offense, but let’s grow our own teachers, let’s grow our own nurses, and so that we don’t have to go scrounging in our community clinics and other kinds of places, having to hire people from somewhere else.”

The National Federation of Filipino American Associations called Barry’s remarks “racist” and “bigoted.”

Googling Democrat racist quotes comes up with this, which I'll just link.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2484587/posts

So we could swap "which party has the most racists" all day long, but that still isn't my point.

Racism as a political force in this country is over. You can no longer make an appeal for votes based on racism and expect to gain more votes than you lose. The only viable political ploy based on racism now is to use it to blame the other party for your constituents' problems. You seem to know this well.

I get that you all don't like people from one party or another. I also get that racially charged comments made towards those public figures might be more meant as political comments than an actual indication of racism from the person making the comments.

However. The comments and the pictures that result from this tension and conflict between the parties are ALL racially charged. Whether it is Herman Cain getting hit by this or Obama.

Don't bother defending such comments or pictures, no matter if you said them, or someone on "your side." They are ultimately irrelevant to the conversation. Gotcha politics or "who does it more" demonstrates nothing and solves nothing.

In the best case scenario no one would be offensive, and no one would be offended. But they are. As it is, the best approach is to give offensive racial partisan nonsense all the consideration it deserves: by ignoring it as a reactionary emotional outburst made in a temporary fit of irrationality.

Racism is over? Hmmmmm.... kinda reminds me of something I've heard before.....

Guess Obama remembered that too, with the big party they're going to throw for the end of racism...

I honestly hate admitting my embedded/instinctual racism. I have worked great jobs and I have worked really shitty jobs. Though in the world I grew up in, with a few exceptions, a large majority of the black people I've worked with were at the crappier end of the spectrum of jobs, one thing remained the same..... I have never actually disliked any black person I've ever worked with. There's no way I can say that about white people I've worked with. That isn't PR bullshit. That is just my truth.

I could get mad at myself for not making an effort to hang out with any of them outside of work, but these days it's a chore for my family sometimes to make sure I make it to family holiday gatherings. Back when I was going out 8 nights a week though, I never even made an attempt to hang out with any of my black co-workers outside of work. One black guy we called "Chappelle" because he looked just like Dave and was funny as hell called me out of the blue about two years ago. My good friend was hanging out at a bar and "Chappelle" showed up and he called me on my friends phone. We said that we should get together sometime and BS, and then we never called each other after that...... :(

I think of how evilly pissed I can get sometimes and how stressful I am walking around. Even when nothing is wrong, I'm always walking around at a level of "2" or "3". There's no question in my mind why a 45 year old black man can look no older than 28 years old. I don't believe it's genetics, at least the skin part... It's the health benefits of a completely different outlook on life. I'm not at all suggesting that black men and women don't suffer from stress. I'm just saying that in my personal experiences that I believe they deal with stress and confrontation on the whole much better than white people do, even if it can be really annoying for white people to have to listen to it.

I find it annoying sometimes to have to overhear one side of drama being spoken over the phone at least once if not ten times a week, particularly with the black youth at my current job, but come break time they're some of the funnest and funniest people to be around. It almost seems as if they don't go to bed angry because they're just as quick to talk about how great a friend they got a day or two later, even though that "friend" was the one on the reciprocal end of that phone conversation that I didn't hear.

Me? Hell... I'm the "camel" in the Idiom "straw that broke the camel's back". I let small shit build and build over the months and even years until one day I explode in some American Psycho type fashion.

I'm referring to Christian's recorded rants. I can assure you that I've never tried to stuff a cat in an ATM machine and I've never successfully dropped an active chainsaw from 15 stories on a fleeing hookers head.

Racism is hardly over.

I don't argue the RNC on the issue though. Holding the entire RNC and any of its supporters accountable for the one single sentence the author ever wrote in their life that they wish they could un-write in 20/20 vision is asinine.

Haven't you ever heard of a f-king type-o?

Haven't you ever worked with a low level employee?

(The answer to that question is, if you have never worked with a low level employee that doesn't know any better you are the low level employee that doesn't know any better).

Eh, you're actually probably fine. No one's got time or patience for friends or making friends anymore, it's not just a racial thing. In fact a couple months ago I went to a wedding and just left before the reception because I thought what was the point? Don't mean to "drift" from the forum topic here, but I just had to comment on this.

I LOVE the Matrix and I've seen it at least 5 times over the years. I don't remember which pill is which, although I can take a pretty good guess just by Rappy posting it. :)

The way I see it racism is far from irrelevant. Take racism/racist attitudes out of the equation and the political landscape changes significantly - the country shifts to the left. Racism makes the country more right wing than it would otherwise be. When the GOP and right wing media stops playing to this, then liberals will probably stop talking about it so much.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Well, "Racism as a political force in this country is over. You can no longer make an appeal for votes based on racism and expect to gain more votes than you lose," that's a joke, in my opinion.

Why I think the battle against racism is done is that most people I know judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Dr. King and Rosa Parks won. The folks who want you to believe otherwise are mostly the folks who keep minorities down so they can use them for political purposes.

The enduring subtle unspoken racism?

You actually need examples? Study after study... far too many to list... have pointed out, and KEEP pointing out, enduring subtle racism. I could rattle off the studies that I read ten years ago, that even "sounding black" over the phone was enough to stop a rental, and which explained the (still existent) sharp lines in housing patterns. But since you're apparently really really far out of the loop of reality, here are a few examples

Discrimination in Housing Against Nonwhites Persists Quietly, U.S. Study Finds
Quote:

Discrimination against blacks, Hispanics and Asians looking for housing persists in subtle forms, according to a new national study commissioned by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Though less likely to face overt obstacles, like being refused an appointment to see a home, minority customers were shown fewer available units than whites with similar qualifications, the study found.

They were also asked more questions about their finances, according to the study, and given fewer offers of help financing a loan.

Unemployed Black Woman Pretends to be White, Job Offers Suddenly Skyrocket
Quote:

Two years ago, I noticed that Monster.com had added a “diversity questionnaire” to the site. This gives an applicant the opportunity to identify their sex and race to potential employers. Monster.com guarantees that this “option” will not jeopardize your chances of gaining employment. You must answer this questionnaire in order to apply to a posted position—it cannot be skipped. At times, I would mark off that I was a Black female, but then I thought, this might be hurting my chances of getting employed, so I started selecting the “decline to identify” option instead. That still had no effect on my getting a job. So I decided to try an experiment: I created a fake job applicant and called her Bianca White.

Discrimination in Consummated Car Purchases
Quote:

The studies using consummated purchase data contain strikingly similar results to those of the audit studies, and together they provide compelling evidence that Blacks pay substantially more for cars than Whites. The existence of this price differential is consistent with claims of racial discrimination and effectively rebuts claims that the audit studies are flawed because they do not reflect bargaining tactics that minorities could use in traditional, face-to-face car sales that would nullify the impact of discrimination.

Racism is like sexism. It still exists, and it still exists in the vast majority of people. Blacks are racist, just like whites. Women are sexist (against other women) just like men are. Sometimes, the only way to experience just HOW MUCH racism exists is to "pass" as the other race. There are plenty of examples of blacks passing as white. Not any (that I can find) of whites passing as black, other than Black Like Me, so you'll just have to use your imagination and some analogy to sexism.

Most sexist laws no longer exist, but is sexism ended? There is the story of a transgender biochemist who has experienced life as both a women and a man in the world of science, and basically he said that when he was a woman he had never experienced anything else, so he didn't know how bad it was... until he became a man.

Quote:

As a young woman—Barbara—he said he was discouraged from setting his sights on MIT, where he ended up receiving his bachelor’s degree. Once there, he was told that a boyfriend must have solved a hard math problem that he had answered and that had stumped most men in the class. After he began living as a man in 1997, Barres overheard another scientist say, “Ben Barres gave a great seminar today, but his work is much better than his sister’s work.”

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/07/060714174545.htm

So, does racism still exist? YES IT DOES. Studies show that it does, but your everyday experience will inform you of that fact (assuming that you're open to simple observation.)

So, has racism "ended"?

NO IT HASN'T. The GOP was WRONG, and so are you. Please deal with it.

That's the insidious thing about (white) privilege. As a beneficiary, unless you make an effort to find out, you don't even have to be aware that it exists. Because the lack of equality exists only outside your experience.

When you're blind to that privilege, you're more likely to act defensively toward people who complain about it. You literally don't know what they are talking about.

Beautifully said, Rouka, and absolutely right on. Of COURSE some don't think racism still exists, because it doesn't affect THEM.

Sig: "even "sounding black" over the phone was enough to stop a rental". I'll go one better, with the same experience I described here before. My supervisor friend at the last law firm I worked for, who moved here from New York. One beautiful, smart, funny, well-spoken woman, looking for an apartment in S.F. Over the phone, she and the landlord discovered they had a whole lot of things in common, landlord really excited to meet her and have her as a tenant. She arrives, gets out of her car, landlord opens the door as she walks up the steps, and she saw the change on the landlord's face and knew what was coming. By the time she got to the door, landlord makes embarrassed explanations, apartment already rented, etc. They both understood perfectly.

Racism still exists; to deny it is ridiculous.

Not to mention neighborhood covenants, and bank lending practices, which serve to keep ethnic minorities in lower income neighborhoods with poorer schools and less opportunity.

Or the anti-Mexican fear mongering... Or the anti-Muslim fearmongering... All of which tend to be associated with various forms of harrassment.

And then there's the stop and frisk policies in New York City, which have been confirmed to target blacks, as well as continuing focus on highway and traffic stops when the driver is black.

Couple this with a justice system that tends to put poorer income people (often ethnic minorities) at a disadvantage, and you end up with a third of all adult black males in the US are currently in prison, most on minor drug charges. And you have the threat of deportation or detainment for latinos and muslims.

The ramifications of these problems are enormous, and difficult for many of these communities to overcome. Not just livelyhood, but also the sense of family, education, and the ability to grow up well. This system is far from equal still.

First of all, let me point out that you shifted the goalposts, from "racism is done" to "improved greatly". Do you suppose that it's possible that things have "improved greatly"- after all, blacks are not generally hung from trees by lynch mobs much anymore, just shot in the street by trigger-happy neighborhood watch captains; and stopped, frisked, arrested, incarcerated, and sentenced far more often and harshly than whites for the same crimes (but who's counting?) - and yet perhaps that we may have not reached that lofty goal of "racism is done"?

Geezer, study after study proves you wrong. You asked for a list of enduring subtle racism, and I provided one. Had I bothered to post more, I could have added education, encounters with the justice system, income, health care, media studies, and even psychological studies which ALL show that enduring subtle racism persists: racism which you have a deep interest in denying.

Sig, "things have "improved greatly"…and yet we have not reached that lofty goal of "racism is done"?" Precisely the point. But trying to communicate that with either Geezer or Rap is a total waste of time, you know that by now.

Omg, I missed this: "unless you have some proof that they're not stuff made up by allthingsdemocrat.com to fire up the base, as you are trying to do by reposting them, they're meaningless." Unbelievable. He's actually stupid enough to BELIEVE that, or is he just running out of comebacks??

Like I'm actually going to look up where each of those images comes from. If there's ANYBODY around who doesn't remember the furor over this one:

It was sent out by arch conservative Dr. David McKalip, who later was forced to, resign from his leadership post because of the furor that ensued. http://www.tampabay.com/news/health/dr-david-mckalip-surgeon-who-forwa
rded-obama-e-mail-resigns-from/1021553
]

As to the cartoon depicting a tea partier claiming "I forgot the President is even colored", it's an apt cartoon. Just as in this thread, the claims that "it's the DEMOCRATS making it racist!" are belied by the signs at conservative events themselves. The SIGNS depicted there come straight out of news stories:

Ted CRUZ's father said outright he wants to send Obama "Back to Kenya" ( http://swampland.time.com/2013/10/31/ted-cruz-dad-wants-to-send-obama-

The "Death to Obama, Michelle and her 2 stupid kids sign": http://www.examiner.com/article/death-to-michelle-obama-and-her-two-st
upid-kids-sign-holder-detained-by-secret-service

As are all the others, and there are far worse ones, photographed AT TEA PARTY EVENTS:

Or hey, ho, how about the young woman wearing a t-shirt with this on it:

Who was accosted in a parking lot? Some of the exchanges that followed are amusing (at http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2009/02/surf_city_obama_monkey_g
irl_sp.php
), and what interests me most about this (aside from the obvious "88") is the illiteracy illustrated by both the girl and her buddy, in comparison to the person who accosted her. Speaks volumes.

How about "Chimpout.com"?

From their website:

Welcome to Chimpout. A black plague is descending upon civilization. That plague is called the nigger. Here at Chimpout we provide up to the minute nigger facts and news stories that are either covered up or buried by the mainstream media.

Our message is simple. Niggers are a cancer upon human society.

We are not a white supremacist site here at Chimpout. We welcome all races, creeds, and colors......just no niggers. http://www.chimpout.com/]

I take it you trust Fox?

You've forgotten this guy?

The idea that Geezer can claim what I put up was "stuff made up by allthingsdemocrat.com to fire up the base" is the most asinine thing I've heard in quite some time. I can only imagine he lives in his own little world and studiously avoids believing anything that doesn't fit his beliefs. It's the only conceivable explanation.

One of the things I notice about american films and tv is how rare the depiction of mixed race couples is, especially if you compare to Brit film and tv, where it is normal and unremarkable.

Twenty or so years ago, it appeared to be almost forbidden. I remember watching the Love Boat back in the day. Every time an African American woman stepped on deck, which wasn't often, you'd know the bartender was going to get lucky.

The election of Obama certainly highlighted the racism that exists in the US, just like the election of a female PM here highlighted the misogyny.
