Well, someone hasn't been getting enough attention lately, obviously:
Quote:

Bill O'Reilly: 'Megyn Kelly Is Correct. Santa Was A White Person'

What this debate over Santa's race lacked was a no spin take from Christmas' most dutiful defender, Bill O'Reilly.

But that all changed Monday when O'Reilly used his Fox News program to render a judgment on the controversy surrounding his colleague Megyn Kelly, who asserted last week that both Santa and Jesus are white.

O'Reilly, who's carved out a lucrative niche writing historical blockbusters focused on the bloody deaths of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Jesus of Nazareth, declared that Kelly was on the mark.

"In this case, Megyn Kelly is correct. Santa was a white person," O'Reilly said.

I don't see O'Reilly as being as ignorant as Kelly; in his case, he knows precisely what he's doing and why. It's an opening to take a swipe at The Left and get attention.
Quote:

Kelly claimed on Friday that she was only joking and said the criticism she received was evidence of "the knee-jerk instinct by so many to race-bait."

O'Reilly agreed and argued, as he often does, that Fox's "far left" critics were really motivated by jealousy over the conservative cable news channel's ratings.

"Because they cannot defeat us on the media battlefield, the far left seeks to demonize Fox News as a right-wing propaganda machine and a racist enterprise," O'Reilly said. "That's why Ms. Megyn got headlines about a Santa Claus remark that was totally harmless."

I wonder how he would explain all the different depictions of Santa Claus around the world? Obviously only America can be right...white America, that is...
Quote:

Teacher to student: You can't be Santa -- you're black!

The family of an African-American high school student in New Mexico says he's crushed after a teacher questioned why he was wearing Santa garb during a school holiday dress-up day last week, CNN affiliate KOAT reported.

The teacher told Christopher Rougier, a freshman at Cleveland High School, that he couldn't be Santa because Santa is white, the student's father, Michael, told KOAT. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/16/us/new-mexico-teacher-black-santa/

Not to be outdone:
Quote:

Libertarian radio host Neal Boortz on Monday defended Fox News' Megyn Kelly's insistence that Santa Claus is white.

"I'm sorry. Santa Claus is white, okay? Deal with it," Boortz, who was filling in for Herman Cain on his radio show, said after a caller asked about the controversy surrounding Kelly's statement.

"I'm gonna scream and complain because Martin Luther King is always portrayed as black," Boortz added.

I think we can neatly trace the arc of conservatives' standing on discussions of race and history. Twenty five years ago conservatives were pushing back against trendy fringe academic claims that Jesus was sub-saharan African. Today they're dead-enders on the question of whether Santa is white. This isn't progress.

Tho', were it me, I'd put House Republicans as SLIGHTLY less devolved than FauxNews fans...not the other way around...

I find it amusing how we trick and deceive children in order to surprise them with presents, and that one particular deception has gained enough traction that there are different versions all over the world converted through the lens of the local culture.

It appears that there is a universal truth that most parents care for their kids, and also like to mess with them and tease them for their own entertainment. Any practice which allows the combination of the two parenting approaches in a lighthearted way will inevitably enjoy immense popularity.

Personally, I don't see Santa Clause as an illustration of parents wanting to "mess with" their kids. Santa Claus is a cultural thing, it's everywhere...the option would be to tell any child of any age who asks that Santa doesn't exist, I take it? Certainly it's feasible, but I can see a lot of complications and confusion, depending on how young the child is.

For me, it's a double-edged sword. On one hand, it divorces the parents from being the ones who provide the gifts, which is kind of neat in that the child can feel they "earned" the gifts on their own. On the other hand, it puts some nebulous "person" in charge of deciding whether the child has been "bad or good", which is a God concept. I'm pretty sure that, either way, most children probably believe that their parents are the ones who decide whether they deserve the gifts or not anyway, so it's no biggie.

I just don't see it as indicative of parents wanting to "mess with" their children, more just going along with the culture, and when it comes to hiding the gifts, putting them out surreptitiously after the children are asleep, having the children leave out milk and cookies, etc., kind of enjoying some childishness of their own. JMHO.

Saint Nicolas was Greek, and tended to be depicted with dark hair and tanned skin. He was still often depicted as being tanned when he was depicted as older with grey hair.

Specifically it was said that it doesn't make sense for Santa to be "lily white." Which is probably accurate.

But more importantly, it doesn't really matter what he's depicted as. Heck, if you're dyslexic or a member of a counter-culture religion, he might even be red, or black, with horns and goat legs.

Really? Because my parents always liked to tell us that Santa didn't come. And then record the reaction.

Parenting is exhausting and frustrating and tiresome from what I can tell, and so trolling children mercilessly appears to be some form of past time or escape. Christmas is a chance to tease but also give your offspring presents, to appease them for the trickery.

I meant Santa in general. One guy delivering presents world-wide, etc.

The figure itself requires mighty suspension of disbelief. I find varying skin colors to be a fairly minor aspect of that.

I see. I could contest that, noting that although Santa Claus was based on the original St Nicholas he has evolved into his own person, with his own 'facts' and characteristics (like living in the North Pole, not modern day Turkey). But the fact is, not a single child is going to bring up the historical St Nicholas to query why Santa Claus is lily white. Most/all would however, query why Santa changes skin colour.

Why not different Santa versions for every region, in fact?

I can actually imagine a movie where they convene for a sort of U.N. type holiday council. And it's a hilarious spoof of the inanity of regular politics and diplomacy. If it's parliament style it could even erupt into a brawl, with each Santa using their own particular aspects to their advantage.

Such as, potentially, being black or asian.

You'd be surprised at what kids don't really question so long as it fits into some world view.

I agree with Rouka. I don't think kids young enough to believe in Santa Claus would have that much trouble with his appearance changing somewhat.

As to parents "messing with" their kids, I now understand where that comes from Byte, but I might suggest not extrapolating generalizations from how your parents behaved. I found that disgusting, and never knew any parents who did anything like that.

Also, at that age, the kid might not even be cognizant of the differences in skin color, or what they entail.

I grew up calling my Dad's best friend "Uncle George" and had no idea whatsoever that we were not actually related until I was probably 6 or 7.

?

Seriously, that's nothing. This one time, my grandmother took her five sons to an abandoned warehouse, told them that a man-eating giant lived there, then yelled "He's coming!" and drove off without them.

She's the nicest person I know. And knowing my uncles and my dad - they probably deserved it. We all laugh about it now.

Then there's all the stories we were told about the martians in the attic that would abduct us, and the murderer in the basement...

And we have some family friends who are part German, and they once hired a friend of theirs to dress up like the Krumpus and kidnap their kids on Christmas.

So I'm pretty sure that trolling kids is fairly normal.

In the end, I feel that only Byte would ever get my household philosophy on "Christmas" if I needed one....

Santa has a ton of shit to do. He comes late to our neck of the woods because a lot of other kids are much more needier....

Meanwhile, after Christmas, we buy up all of the 70% off clearance toys and celebrate Christams on New Years Eve morning.

The quote you used was me saying that Megyn Kelly's "joke" breached a line when she addressed children. So no, the connection between that and Buff Jesus is pretty slim.

The TOPIC of how folks view historical figures, be it St.Nicholas or Jesus is the point. Not sure how you're missing that. Yeah, I quoted you,but only because you mentioned Jesus, and then I went on to expand on the bigger issue.

I can see that Niki gets her news from Media Matters or some such Left wing site, instead of actually listening to talk radio hosts like Neal Boortz ( who actually retired from full time radio at the end of 2012, but on occasion, will fill in as guest host )

Neal did talk radio for 40 + years, and loves nothing more than to piss off Leftists and bible thumpers equally.

Of course, this definition only works if you believe that man kind is the PINNACLE of biological evolution, and that all previous life forms are inferior, less advanced and of less significance than our own. It is a incomplete and false premise.

Which may explain Niki's cheesy, woefully inaccurate and derogatory 'devolution' imaged of politics pic. The absurd and laughable implication that those who cherish and promote freedom and individual rights are some how 'lesser' than the fully erect, enlightened socialists. When in fact, the exact opposite is true, and TEA Party Americans are at the pinnacle of human political evolution.

So you saw the word "Jesus" and decided to quote me as a jumping-off point regardless of what I actually said in that paragraph.

... instead of quoting anything that came before in this thread that actually dealt with the subject of what Jesus may have looked like.

... instead of simply going "Regarding Jesus..."

That's actually not simple to follow. That's a pretty convoluted way of inserting your opinion on oiled, muscled Jesus. Though let us get back to that subject, I'm still curious about your experience with that image. In fact, you could go back to my whole reply to your post, quote that and then answer my questions there!

Ooops, somebody else isn't getting enough attention lately, I guess. It just keeps getting funnier (and crazier!):
Quote:

The “White Santa” issue continues to gain ever more dimensions as the right-wing pundits demand to turn a Turkish bishop into a white nordic figure. Now, Herman Cain radio show guest host Neal Boortz spoke with a caller and stated that not only were Jesus and Santa white, that if people are able to change them from white, that he should have the right to claim that Martin Luther King was also white.

“Everything has got to be black now, it doesn’t matter what it is,” the caller laments.

“You know, I’m going to scream and complain because Martin Luther King is always portrayed as black,” Boortz quips. “It just ain’t right.”

Talk about COMPLETELY unclear on the concept...and completely loony to boot...!

The silliest part is that we have photos of MLK, a real person, as well as portraits of St. Nicholas, a real person, and neither was "white". To argue that the cartoon character CREATED from St. Nicholas "must" be white or else the REAL PERSON of MLK should be portrayed as white is beyond belief.

Or, OMG, is it possible these poor deluded right wingers never grew out of believing Santa Claus is a REAL PERSON???

Depends on how quickly they went away when he started walking around preaching. But if he actually grew up as a carpenter helping Daddy Joseph you'd he would have developed a reasonably muscled physique. Carpentry takes some level of strength.

There's an athletic build that laborers can have, true. But there's also a hulkier, beefy physique that body builders aim for, which generally exceeds the normal muscle mass one sees in those who do manual labor. The JC I saw was more Muscle Beach than John Henry, if that makes any sense.

That might be what the problem is. Also, you POOR THING. Who chained you to a desk and forced you to read those?

I tried to get into those simply for my own twisted entertainment, but even my taste for the horrible was not tasteless enough for Chick Tracts.

LOL. Yeah, I had to endure such torture when I crossed paths with hard core young Earth creationists. These were the fringe of the fringe ( I can only hope ) , and about as low down as the Phelps cult, on the IQ meter. Truly horrific.

I was not aware anyone but Jack Chick actually took Chick Tracts seriously.

Excuse me, must reboot my mind.

Ooooh, I see! Okay, that's not a very mainstream phenomenon, then. Those things are incredibly creepy, I am not surprised they would depict a creepy-looking Jesus, as well.

2) I can only pray I misunderstood here, but Jesus with muscles is homosexual imagery? The grin I get imagining that this is what comes to your mind looking at him suffering on the cross is.. hard to suppress.

Not MY mind, but those who think that a buff, strong, masculine Jesus is some how more desirable image to put forth. It's like someone is over compensating.

I cannot judge that, I honestly don't know much about closeted hyper-Christian body image issues. But I think I see what you mean.

3) Jesus was a carpenter. And not necessarily a poor one who couldn't afford proper food. He probably HAD muscles, when you think about it. At least for a time. Depends on how quickly they went away when he started walking around preaching. But if he actually grew up as a carpenter helping Daddy Joseph you'd he would have developed a reasonably muscled physique. Carpentry takes some level of strength.

Yeah, looking at that Adam, I understand your point.

When I read your original post I hadn't expected you to refer to a fairly fringe kind of medium. Honestly, I would find anything they print disturbing just because they printed it and the air of paranoid judgment would be hanging over it.

Anyway, thanks again for elaborating!

What forensic scientists think Jesus probably looked like.

Kind of interesting how far off the mark we've got with modern aryan versions which cannot be true.

Something went awry with your quote, making Auraptor's words appear like mine...

Apart from that, much agreement.

No problem.

There was also an ad for a church I saw in a newspaper, several years ago. There was a cartoon of a frail, elderly man, apparently on death's doorstep, lying in bed. In the next panel, a buff, burly male angel, ( think Kenny Powers, from East Bound and Down, with the perm mullet and all ) is grabbing the frail old man by the hand, and lifting him up into heaven. The final panel, the old man has passed, but his expression is of one who died calm and happy. His after-life self, youthful, vigorous and healthy, is side by side with his angel 'buddy'.

I do believe I was scarred for life.

I can't say for certain that it was connected w/ the Chick ministries or not, but it sure was in the same genre, that not only are Christians given eternal life, but they're freaking perfect physical specimens.

Jack Chick has this strange tendency to draw both biblical figures and homosexuals that way. The best explanation I've heard is that he's gay for Jesus. And for other guys, but mostly Jesus. Mostly.

It's just, sometimes the YMCA locker room makes things so hard...
