Yeah, I know, but why not offer it anyway?

In much of the northeastern quadrant of the United States, the past few days have seen the coldest weather in about 20 years. The Midwestern lows have been dangerously, frighteningly low. Near the coast, the weather is slightly less cold, but wilder. At 7 yesterday morning, the temperature outside here in New York City was 53 degrees Fahrenheit. This morning as I write, it's 4 degrees -- that's 49 degrees different.

The numbers are indeed extreme. But in a larger sense, the current situation in the atmosphere is the norm -- just more so.

Most of the United States lies in the midlatitudes. That means, between the tropics and the pole. We get our weather from both directions.

Cold arctic air and hot tropical air can't easily mix together to make lukewarm air, because the earth's rotation deflects them sideways. The result is the jet stream, a very fast air current that blows from west to east at about the altitude (coincidentally) that jet planes fly, along the top of the boundary separating warm from cold.

(Sometimes our Northern Hemisphere weather maps show two jet streams, one north of the other. The northern one makes a loop around the pole with the coldest air inside. This cold air mass with the jet around it is what is being called the "polar vortex" in recent media stories.)

But the cold and warm air can't stay apart forever. The jet undulates, forming giant loops and eddies the size of one or more American states. These are high- and low-pressure systems. They stir the atmosphere around on a giant scale. They can move the air north or south fast enough that it brings some of the climate of the latitude from which it came.

Warm moist air coming north ahead of low pressure swirls around cold air plunging south behind it. Where they meet at the ground, temperature contrasts sharpen yet further as cold and warm are squeezed together along fronts.

These low temperatures, on the other hand, are normal for the Arctic Circle. What makes this event extreme is not that the cold air exists at all, just that it's roaming a little farther than usual.

But there can be larger causes for gradual changes in the probabilities that certain types of events will occur. Global warming is one such larger cause. Of course, the cold snap which the current jet distortions have brought us doesn't contradict the fact of warming. It's the exception that proves the rule.

This is the coldest weather in about 20 years. But it has happened before, and cold weather is happening less often overall. As stated in the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, daily minimum temperatures (as well as daily maximum temperatures) over land have increased since 1950.

Globally, 2013 saw the warmest November in recorded history, and in recent times high-temperature records have been repeatedly broken much more often than low-temperature records.

We do understand the basics. On average, the high temperatures are getting higher, and the lows are getting higher too. Global warming is as real and serious as ever, it's just exceedingly gradual compared with the dramatic temperature swings that are still part of living in midlatitudes in winter. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/07/opinion/sobel-winter-cold-global-warming

Of course, this guy is just a flunkey for The Left, obviously; his credentials mean nothing:

You are Not a troll, but a citizen.

There is a widespread conviction that it is the responsibility of citizens in a democracy to have opinions about everything, and, as conscientious moral agents, to evaluate events and conditions in all parts of the world. When citizens write about a topic of which they are to some very large degree ignorant of the facts that are relevant to that topic, bullshit is unavoidable.

Polar Vortex Chill Fails to Make History

It's cold, but not record-breaking cold

By Stephanie Paige Ogburn and ClimateWire

With the launch of a Polar Vortex Twitter account, videos of boiling water freezing going viral, and the Weather Channel reporting on the "shattering" of cold records, anyone tracking the recent cold snap across the eastern and middle parts of the United States could be forgiven for thinking this sort of cold was unprecedented.

In fact, it's not.

"This is not anything that I would deem to be unusual or extraordinary," said Mark Wysocki, the New York state climatologist. "The type of winter that we are currently experiencing we have experienced in the past, when you take a look at records across the Midwest and Northeast," he continued.

William Schmitz, the service climatologist and a meteorologist at the Southeast Regional Climate Center, agreed. "It's cold," Schmitz said. "But just like the Northeast, it wasn't all-time record-breaking."

... In the 1980s, Willis said, cold periods like this were much more usual. In the recent past, they have become less frequent. This is perhaps why the cold seems out of the ordinary.

New York climatologist Wysocki said that since the last couple of winters have been fairly mild, this one, which he called "typical," might seem worse in contrast. "I'm sure if people sat down and really thought about it, they'd think, 'I've experienced this weather before, and this is nothing new. It's just been a while since I've had it, that's all,'" he said.

... A number of media outlets tried to link this recent cold outbreak with a wavier jet stream that is possibly caused by the reduction in temperature difference between a much warmer Arctic, which is heating up rapidly due to global warming, and the lower parts of the world. However, the science behind the link between warming in the Arctic and wackier weather in the midlatitude regions like the United States, Europe and much of Asia is far from proven.

... Hoerling also addressed the idea of weather weirding, that climate change is causing the weather to behave more erratically. ... "If you take the whole U.S., the indications are that there is an increasing frequency of record high temperatures versus record daily low temperatures," he said.
