In a first, working-age people now make up the majority in U.S. households that rely on food stamps — a switch from a few years ago, when children and the elderly were the main recipients.

The findings coincide with the latest economic data showing workers' wages and salaries growing at the lowest rate relative to corporate profits in U.S. history.

Economists say having a job may no longer be enough for self-sufficiency in today's economy.

"A low-wage job supplemented with food stamps is becoming more common for the working poor," said Timothy Smeeding, an economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who specializes in income inequality. "Many of the U.S. jobs now being created are low- or minimum-wage — part-time or in areas such as retail or fast food — which means food stamp use will stay high for some time, even after unemployment improves." http://www.chron.com/default/article/The-new-face-of-food-stamps-worki

Yeah, all those bums on food stamps, they just don't want to work and want to "suck off the government teat", we don't need safety nets for people who are just "too lazy" to get jobs, and there's nothing wrong with a few people making all the money (isn't the line that it "encourages" others or something?). Makes me sick, what's happened to our country.

Just what Obama wants, too. More govt reliance, less ind. responsibility.

Where are all those shovel ready jobs, Barry?

What was it that Marie Antoinette said? Something about letting them eat cake?

There is a developing resemblance to the French Revolution. I certainly hope it's NOT coming, La Guillotine did not improve things, but if the ruling class and the rich don't start paying attention to the masses, an uprising in the streets could be coming. And it won't be the one the Tea Baggers and Second Amendment nuts and militia guys are preparing for, where they can toady up and help The Establishment oppress the rioters. If things get bad enough, everything could be swept away in the tide of popular rage.

It's certainly a worry, NewOld; the disparity between rich and poor and the concentration of wealth aren't good for anyone, including the super-rich, in the long term. I, too, hope it doesn't come to boiling point, and worry about what's happening to our country.

For all his faults, Obama has tried to do what he can, but up against a right-wing Congress whose entire focus is to defeat everything, there's not much he can do but keep trying to increase the safety net for those being screwed. What amazes me is that these rich people can't SEE how dangerous what they're doing is, for them as well as everyone else. To me, it's more evidence of the mentality I've seen for a long time: "I've got mine, screw you". It's like if they can just hoard ENOUGH riches, and hope nothing blows up until they're dead and gone, to hell with everything else. I guess that's the result of living in so much of a bubble, but it's weird they don't even care what's coming for their offspring...

Yah, I been seein this impulse for some time now, most people only notice the boil when the bubbles start popping, but having seen the foundations of such discontent for nigh unto a decade now I am actually concerned - I'd like it to not go that way, and things have surprised me before, but if it does imma roll with it, maybe even help it along some, cause what else can ya do ?

And in a dark humor kinda way, it'd be damn funny for those jackboot lickers to realize that the "pathetic liberals" they scorn so much are every bit as well armed, on average more skilled with those arms, far better organized, and OUTNUMBER THEM A THOUSAND TO ONE.
Yeah, that'd be what we call a brick passer moment for them.

Think of it like a reality survival show, okay ?
Two groups of survivors, one all about rabid self interest and competition and survival of the fittest and damn the hindmost, and the other all about cooperation, communication and mutual support....
End of that, you might have a tiny bare handful of half-starved, ill-equipped, paranoid nutbags, versus a full community of people willing to work together in a cause - who you think is gonna win that, hrm ?

Which is why I all but WISH the red-south would friggin secede, and would be happy to evict em, so I could watch em destroy themselves without dragging us down too, and when they blameshift and try to attack us in their mentally unbalanced never-my-fault lunacy after they've destroyed their economy, infrastructure and population, and we got done laughing after mowing down their pathetic forces (cause when did you ever see any of that mindset admit they have no chance, hrm?) we could take the land back and maybe for a time, hopefully forever, be DONE with their fucking insanity.

I might be vicious, I might be a little off the rocker, but most of that perception comes from simply being willing to say the things no one else will dare.

Back to the topic...

One of the real cruelties about food stamps is how certain political factions set up to the system to fail, set those PEOPLE up to fail, by revoking the goddamn things just when they MOST need them.

You start making alllllllmost enough to get by without, and they yank the rug out from under, cut em off, bang - and then yer in worse straights than if you didn't even try, which does discourage a lot of people, and who pushed for the cutoff to be right there ?
Why, the same motherfuckers who keep screaming about people being on foodstamps, all the while rigging the game so they can't get off, for political points.

The same way they block access to education, contraception, yadda yadda, and then scream a fit about the INEVITABLE RESULTS OF THEIR OWN ACTIONS, which they took deliberately in order to create an excuse to scream that fit.

Same basic policy, malice, sabotage and setting things up to cause a disaster, then howling and throwing a tantrum when the disaster THEY CREATED ON PURPOSE comes to pass, all the while pointing the finger anywhere but themselves.

Crime, Poverty, Human Rights, all the same, and all the same game, and always, always the GOP pouring poison in the garden and laying blame elsewhere when nothing blooms.

And the worst of it - spending pennies early, on education, food and shelter, advocacy programs, saves us THOUSANDS later in not having to clean up the mess, and them GOP fuckers know it too - they just don't care.

I guess you have something against cake now, huh?

BTW, biggest distorted story in history since the divinity of Jesus.

The REAL story of Marie and 'cake' -The phrase "Let them eat cake" is often attributed to Marie Antoinette, but there is no evidence she ever uttered it, and it is now generally regarded as a "journalistic cliché".[137] It may have been a rumor started by angry French peasants as a form of libel. This phrase originally appeared in Book VI of the first part (finished in 1767, published in 1782) of Rousseau's putative autobiographical work, Les Confessions.

Enfin je me rappelai le pis-aller d’une grande princesse à qui l’on disait que les paysans n’avaient pas de pain, et qui répondit : Qu’ils mangent de la brioche.
Finally I recalled the stopgap solution of a great princess who was told that the peasants had no bread, and who responded: "Let them eat brioche."

Apart from the fact that Rousseau ascribes these words to an unknown princess — vaguely referred to as a "great princess", there is some level of thought that he invented it altogether, seeing as Confessions was, on the whole, a rather inaccurate autobiography. [138]

But of course, Leftist have ALWAYS enjoyed making up lies and then repeating them as truth.

Somethings just never do change.

I'm afraid you are right Frem. Civil war is in the offing, maybe sooner than we think if the status quo continues.
