PETA went off the deep end quite a while ago. They figured out how to be be profitable being a non-profit business, by taking in money and then not using it to help animals at all and just kill them instead. But in order for their business decisions to make sense to the supporters, they had to embrace rather more extreme takes on their philosophy.

For example, they now believe that merely owning a pet constitutes cruelty to animals, and that since pets can't be rehabituated into the wild, the animals should be put down instead.

PETA argues that it would have been better for animals had the institution of breeding them as "pets" never emerged, that the desire to own and receive love from animals is selfish, and that their breeding, sale, and purchase can cause immeasurable suffering. Newkirk has stated that she doesn't use the word "pet," preferring "companion animal."

Never been a Peta fan (well, their "Id rather wear nothing" ads are ok). Their "death before pet" policy is horrific.
