CVS Pharmacies announced on February 5th that they would no longer carry cigarettes and tobacco products at their over 7,600 stores in the United States. All stores will comply by the first of October. This move was praised by the American Cancer Society, among others (including...here it comes...Obama).

The very night that CVS announced its decision, Fox commentators and hosts began with the attack. It’s like they have talking points or something…
Quote:

On Fox's The Real Story, host Gretchen Carlson approached the CVS decision with suspicion and a remarkably uninformed premise, asking, "Is it OK legally ... to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this?" She questioned her guests as to whether they would continue shopping at CVS and observed that, "For people who smoke, you know, they have a right to buy cigarettes. It's not illegal."

On Your World, Fox host and VP Neil Cavuto noted that President Obama supported CVS' decision, and speculated that CVS was "getting scaredy cat" because "with the health care law and the changes and everything else," selling tobacco products "didn't look good."

And on Fox's The Five, co-host Dana Perino tried to use the decision to attack President Obama's health care law.

A private company's decision to part ways with a proven carcinogen and the cause of one out of every five deaths in the United States annually may seem non-controversial -- and in fact fits within the free market ethos that many Fox hosts purport to champion -- but Fox News has a long history of manufacturing conflict on almost any topic if it can be used to attack President Obama.

In 2009, Fox News declared itself "the voice of the opposition" to Obama, and in every year since the network has illustrated it will go to any lengths to do just that. http://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/02/05/fox-freaks-out-over-cvs-ending
-sales-of-tobacco/197947

"Is it OK legally ... to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this?" Is Carlsen out of her ever-lovin' mind? Okay, here’s the thing, Fox brain-trust: this is the very essence of the free market. You know, that principle that you claim is so important? CVS is a PRIVATE CORPORATION. They made a decision on whether or not to carry an item. That is their prerogative. Simple as that.

Fox News is so deranged when it comes to Obama, that they have become schizophrenic. Either that, or their paid commentators have no sense of self-worth whatsoever and are willing to look like complete idiots in order to pander to the extreme right.

Must CVS now carry hardcore porn?

They're a business, they can sell or not sell whatever they please.
In this case they're being leveraged to not sell by big pharma (who wants you addicted to THEIR nicotene instead) and medical insurance companies, which is debateable as a practice, but since they dangled the profit carrot and CVS jumped on it, not much to say there.

I do say that morally they've fallen a bit before this - my prescription coverage used to be through them and we had a fair enough deal, till they decided to pull some contract-breaking funny business, with, erm, predictable results...
There's also the QC problem of screwing up prescriptions, once near fatally, but that might be a local problem.

I do find it somewhat entertaining that Walgreens has made some noise about the fact that they still carry tobacco products, but end of the day I ain't entirely sure it's really appropriate for a store devoted to health and safety to sell things that most certainly are not, not so much on a moral judgement as just product-theme, you know ?

Merely asking the question doesn't seem so crazy to me. " Is it OK legally ... to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this ?"

And she's right. The product isn't illegal. So if some folks out there might really be wondering, that's why Gretchen was asking her guest. CVS can CHOOSE to not sell something, regardless of whether it's legal, BECAUSE they are a private company. Hell, even a govt run store could decide not to carry something. Doesn't mean that product is banned.

We have a weird thing going on in our country now, where tobacco is being cast as some sort of evil product, yet marijuana is gaining acceptance. I say sell 'em both.

But this MEDIA MATTERS fabricated " story " on FOX News is nothing but an blatant attempt to twist words and paint a false picture. This is a hit piece, and nothing else.

Faux is just defending Big Tobacco. They always do, but carefully.

They just as reliably cast marijuana legalization as the end of the world as we know it.

Show me a Faux opinionator who doesn't piss their pants on the topic.

Ah, the patented Fox question (as perfected by sleazemeister Glen Beck). Ask something clearly and obviously not even remotely true - so as to plant the idea in the minds of their poorly informed audience.

Much like their use of "some people say", Fox asking those questions is virtually a guarantee of a bullshit smear.

No, actually, I did listen to all three segments, and yes, some of those being interviewed made good points. But are you saying the people quoted didn't say what they did? What Carlsen said, specifically, was: "Is it okay, legally, since you're a lawyer, to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like that?"

The point is, why would you even ask such a question? These are the people who PREACH private enterprise, who frequently make the POINT that private enterprise has the right to do what it wants. In my opinion, that's a weird question.

By the way, along the line, I caught a few other interesting exchanges. It's not what they discuss, it's the choice of wording which I found interesting:
Quote:

Cavuto: "You wanna light up, you better stock up…at least at CVS…

It was up to CVS to make that decision for shoppers….You're worried, Melissa, that it's a slippery, sugary slope."

Melissa: "What's next? Ding Dongs? Ring Dings? They sell diet pills. They sell alcohol."

Cavuto: "So you get the diet pills with the Ring Dings…"

Melissa: "I guess, I mean those are terrible for you…they sell alcohol, they sell sugar, they sell soda…"

Quote:

Cavuto (to the lady marked "Nutritionist" who approves of the move): "Yeah, but I also know you're a health freak and now you're saying we got rid of the cigarettes, now we're heading for the snack-food aisle"

Tanya: "Eventually I'd like to see a lot of positive changes…"

Cavuto: "Ah HAH! This is all a cabal!"

Tanya: "Doritos in moderation have not been shown to increase the chance of morbidity, but we know even one cigarette causes damage."

Quote:

Cavuto: "You know what I think, I really do think CVS is getting scaredy cat here. You know, with the health care law and the changes and everything else, it certainly didn't look good in this environment--I'm not a fan of smoking, believe me--for them to be selling these products when the nation is moving en masse into this healthcare law, bumps notwithstanding, and you don't want to be one of the country's top five providers and sell this stuff."

Why couch it as "scaredy cat"? Businesses promote what they do to encourage people to support them...as in shop there. It's a "selling point", not being a "scaredy cat".

Quote:

Dana Perino: "President Obama praised this decision in a statement, so let them know, they got the pat on the back from the White House, but I just wonder; is this President Obama now saying that corporations are allowed to have values? And express them? 'Cause if that's the case, maybe corporations don't have to provide contraceptive care to their employees for their health plans

"Ooooo, that's a good point…"

"And the Supreme Court Justices might want to think about that."

Since when have corporations NOT been allowed to have values?? That one's weird to me; many corporations do this or that within their business to further what they believe is right, from making products with less waste, low fat, environmentally better, or whatever. Also, to me there's a big difference between that and a corporation deciding what parts of health insurance they will provide and what they won't. Especially because I'll bet there isn't a single corporation that would go out of its way to refuse it's employees coverage for viagra, etc.

Probably because they had a lawyer there and wanted to get her view on the legal angle. Seems a good lead-in for that. You're just so far gone you can't believe it's not a plot.

EC, I posted segments of it. You can find clips of all three discussions at http://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/02/05/fox-freaks-out-over-cvs-ending
-sales-of-tobacco/197947

Each one is only about two minutes long. I found Cavuto the most disingenuous of the three, virtually every word out of his mouth was an attempt to snark/slant, and little else.

Its standard Fox policy - if its smart, they are agenst it, if its stupid they are for it.

Obama'z biggest mistake iz letting them liv. He coud suffocate at least 75% uv the entire Fox organization along with the all the GoP elected officialz just by saying 'breathing iz good'.
