Actually, fascists tend to be on the Left, and not so much on the Right of the political spectrum.

But Margaret Thatcher was 100% right about socialists. Eventually, they run out of other people's money.

Anyone can devolve into fascism regardless of their political affiliation.
Fascists can even deregulate an economic system so it collapses to make the rich even richer, or shut down a government purely for fun...

Far more. It takes a creative mind to combine elements that work into an overall WHOLE that works.
Uncreative minds (see: Rappy) just dismiss solutions at will based on the 'Them' judgement.

Bruce Lee didn't dismiss western boxing because it didn't fit into his eastern martial traditional training.

If something works, USE IT. Figure OUT how to incorporate it successfully into your present 'system'.

Just sayin'.

if anything, the fact that your cartoon shows that Nordic countries keep their students from going into debt for high education, but they end up in massive debt afterwards anyways, suggests that there is still some pretty dangerous economic exploitation going on over there. And that this economic exploitation is everywhere, and evidence of some kind of global corruption.

I don't disagree about the basic concept of debt-free education though.

Denying that anyone else might do it better is also a sign of hubris, and something that I have noted is somewhat characteristic of the American psyche. If you believe in American exceptionalism, then you believe that America is the greatest, Americans are naturally better, and if it werent thought up by Americans then it aint worth doing.

I think in someways the econmic downturn is a necessary, albeit painful experience for America as a nation. A shock for some, that maybe Americas standing at the top of the world wasn't a natural state of being, but something that needs some hard re-evaluating if you want to get back up ther, if indeed that's what you want.

It doesn't hurt to look at what works elsewhere, otherwise you're in danger of putting effort into reiventing the wheel when someone else did that 10,000 years ago. I think the biggest example is your healthcare system. I mean, honestly, did ANYONE at least look at what works and what doesn't work in public health systems elsewhere?

It's not just the economic downturn, I think it's the emerging challenge of China, and the prospect of losing the position as greatest power in the world, that the American psyche has to come to terms with.

Britain's been through it all, of course. We were exceptional. We dominated 1/4 of the globe. We were the Empire on which the sun never set. We were the 'New Jerusalem'. Then our star faded - or rather, others grew, and eclipsed ours.

America has to manage its transition from global hegemon to 'upper-mid sized power that punches above its weight'. Let's hope that the order rearranges more peacefully this century than it did in the last.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Firstly there isn't that huge a cultural divide, really in the grand scheme of things. I guess rather than copying, perhaps just examining what works elsewhere and why it works rather than clinging to ideas that may have served well in the past.

Being a small country, that is something I think we do often. Look at what others have done. Might that work for us? Could we adapt that to our system? If anything, we do it too much.

You chose a system that was kind of a bastard child with ADHD of what you already had. Not a sign that significant thought was given to how public health systems work elsewhere and the good and bad qualities of those systems.

You know how many times I had this conversation with Americans.

Yank - A socialised health system can never work, never. No way. It's impossible.
Aussie - You do realise that all other western countries have a public health system, don't you.
Yank - it can never work in the US. Never. Ever.
Aussie - why is that? What is so different about the US.
Yank - because we're unique, baby. Utterly unique.

etc etc.

More like a nihilist. But anyway... i dunno. I marvel mostly how well things actually work. I'm still astonished that i can flick a switch and get power, and I can hold conversations with people on the otherside of the world, and that I turn on a tap and get clean water, as much as I like and someone comes every friday morning and takes all my rubbish away. Yeah our leaders suck, mostly. But on election day, I don't need armed guards to escort me to the booth and yes, politicans are accountable and scrutinised. Maybe not enough, but some.

Because you have to be DIRECTLY bombing people to get any BENEFIT out of it. Germany trashing their own economy and then everyone around them and the costs of reconstruction had nothing to do with the American dollar ending up the only stable currency left standing.

You know exactly what I meant. Before the war in the 1930s there were many different social programs put into place, and no one on this board will ever agree exactly how effective or ineffective those policies were. We would also no doubt argue about how the economic and social climate of today is very different from then and whether those programs could be successful now. But what we CAN agree on is the economic consequences of WW2 after 1945 and how that turned out for the American dollar.

The point I was making is that NOTHING is above criticism.

Also, the criticisms you posted were not the main points of the article, but the article isn't that important.

THANK you. That is ALL I wanted to hear. I was getting the impression that the argument here was that if we suddenly became Norway we'd no longer have any problems, and it was BOTHERING me.

Whew. Okay. Yes. We are starting to agree on things now.

I lost my temper. There was flailing and capslock. Verifiable flailing and gnashing of teeth.

Oh my gosh, Byte, you caught me out. I was actually waiting for a chance to find a topic where I could personally, but rather sneakily attack you. But not sneaky enough hey.

Because lets face it, it is ALL about you. Everything is. All the threads are. They are all personally directed at you and about you. Even if others do not see it, you certainly do.

FREMDFIRMA

Worth a mention that in 1930 America was *DECIDEDLY* Pro-Fascist, the corporate robber barons were all but masturbating to their economic policies, Henry Ford was all but fellating them, the German-American Bund was having parades in NYC, The "American Liberty League" (Later becoming The Business Plot, derailed by Smedley Butler) was pushing hard, and the fucking American Legion (one reason why I despise them utterly) thought it was the greatest fucking thing since sliced bread...
And don't even get me started on Lindberg and America-First.
Or how we SUPPORTED Franco.

American Big Business has always LOOOOVED Fascism, ESPECIALLY the Italian model wherin the State supports, endorses and aids their rabid exploitation, of course they would, did not the events at Blair Mountain show this beyond any doubt, when it took the military intervention of the State to save them from a total ass kicking at the hands of workers pushed too far ?
Has the State not ALWAYS sided against the worker when it came to blows ?

Let's not pretend America isn't disgustingly Fascism-Friendly, because behind closed doors Corporate America doesn't lament Hitlers downfall so much as sneering at the humanitarian reasons which have (quite rightfully) rendered the very word a curse, because they are fucking sociopaths.

Never for a moment forget it, this is what they are, and the Corporate Robber Barons would leap upon even the memory of that horror in a picosecond if they could just manage to make it any kinda palatable.

Which is why the only good use for em... is fertilizer.

Were the workers Fascist too?
Workers, farmers : not fascists.
Lower & middle classes : not fascists.
Those are the Americans I see.

U.S. History as taught to me in school, albeit whitewashed:
WWI took a terrible toll on the common people. And the
outcry was, "No more foreign wars for Us; we'll look after
our own!"

Wealth and corruption ruled then as it does now. But now,
it's more obvious, I think.

What should we do?

I don't believe that word means what you think it means.

I wasn't by any stretch being overly boastful, NOR is my acknowledgement of what the USA has done in any way a 'defiance' to the gods. Unless you think Europe and the rest of the world does and view the old colonial powers as " gods ", then you may be onto something. Because we did break away from the old world, specifically to form a new type of govt.

Sorry if that rubs you the wrong way.

What was bothering ME is that the article that you linked to was such a spiteful hatchet job that it weakened the point you were making. And, if you read the article again, I think you'll see that these criticisms ARE the main point of the article. It was like the writer couldn't find enough material to flesh out more than a couple of paragraphs about Denmark, and decided to dip into a bag of random bits of innuendo, anecdote, strawman, and self-contradiction. So, sexual liberation has emasculated Swedish men, has it? And of course there are studies which show that males in Sweden have less sex than males in other developed nations?

So, as I said, if you read again, but this time take out the baseless, the innuendo, the anecdote, the self-contradictory, and the snark, the article evaporates to almost nothing. Not a good way to make a point.

FWIW, there was one point I thought interesting: Denmark is in the same position as Iceland was before the crash- very high standard of living for less work, great amount of happiness, and huge amount of debt. It seems that happiness is as easily predicted in China as it is in Iceland, Denmark, and anyplace else: less work, and more time and resources for fun stuff.
