CHICAGO — Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn gave an emotional speech Wednesday
urging the world community to help Haiti as he accepted an award from a gathering
of Nobel Peace Prize laureates for his humanitarian work in the earthquake-ravaged
country.

“It’s an overused phrase I know, but I trust you know its genuine today, I am humbled.
I’m trembling and I like it,” Penn said after accepting the 2012 Peace Summit Award
from former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who was joined on stage by the Dalai
Lama and former Polish President Lech Walesa.

Penn has become a major player in efforts to rebuild Haiti after the January 2010
earthquake that devastated the island nation, flattening thousands of buildings,
killing more than 300,000 people and leaving at least 1.5 million homeless.

BEAVER, PA April 29, -- Police say two teenage girls who fell asleep while
sunbathing on a rural Pennsylvania road have been struck by a car.

The Beaver County Police Department tells WTAE-TV that 13-year-olds Samantha
Schermanhorn and Kaylie George were hit by the vehicle Sunday afternoon.

Two of Samantha's cousins tell the station that their 19-year-old brother had
stopped at a stop sign and made a turn before striking the girls with his car.

Nicole and Nicholas Beck say the girls were conscious and told them that they
had fallen asleep while suntanning. The cousins say their brother was questioned
by police after the crash.

The girls were airlifted to a hospital. Officials with the Children's Hospital
of Pittsburgh tell the station that the girls are in fair condition Sunday night.

Oonjerah has learned that the girls will not be nominated for a Darwin Award as they are still alive.

Here's Johnny! Coming up on the PBS schedule is a show not to be missed,
American Masters -- Johnny Carson: King of Late Night.

The debut of this two-hour documentary special is timed with two notable
events: the date when Carson took over The Tonight Show from previous host,
Jack Paar, and the date of Carson's farewell. Indeed, it has been 20 very
long years since America was able to tune in and see their favorite late
night talk show host.

Carson was more than a host. He was a true comedian ...

PBS will begin airing the special on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 9 p.m. EST.

Should Paula Dean be crucified for admitting she's used the N-word?

How many here have never used the N-word? How many black comedians

Should Aaron Hernandez be prosecuted for murdering a friend of his?

Absolutely, yes! Since he recently held himself up as a role model,

then he's gotta take the heat to become a martyr & greater role model.

Yes?

With a monument to Atheism in Starke, FL ... shouldn't there be a

law that Atheist displays must appear wherever there are religious

Should there be a Social Network set up strictly for rants and anger

Hawaii's shark worries worsen after kayaker dies in Maui attack
http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-maui-shark-attack-201

Hawaii officials have shut down an area of water just off the southern
coast of Maui after a kayaker was killed in an apparent shark attack
there Monday.

It was the second such death in Maui this year, continuing a worrisome
trend for Hawaii after a decade of relative quiet that has been disturbed
by an increase in shark attacks over the last two years.

On Monday, Patrick A. Briney, 57, of Stevenson, Wash., was fishing and
kayaking with a friend ...

The attacks represent the continuing escalation of a worrisome trend:
There have been at least eight shark attacks around Maui in 2013, with
13 shark attacks overall reported around the state, according to state
data and recent reports.

When I was a kid, shark infested waters were sometimes called "black water."

Is there something wrong with me to think that swimming, surfing,
kayaking, and even snorkeling in black water is inviting disaster?

Paul Walker's death moves studio to postpone 'Fast & Furious 7' 'for a period of time'
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/walker-death-force-
studio-start-fast-furious-7-scratch-article-1.1537235

Paul Walker’s tragic death may force producers to bring “Fast &
Furious 7” back to the starter’s block.
Universal Studios has shut down production on the film indefinitely
as execs, producers and the cast and crew to mourn the actor who was
killed Saturday with his friend, Roger Rodas, when their 2005 Porsche
Carrera GT was engulfed in flames after a horrific crash.

I think I once watched The Fast and the Furious [1] for about
20 minutes. Then I felt as Rae Dawn Chong in Commando, "I can't
believe this macho bullshit..."
Don't get me wrong. I love (some) car movies.

I don't think I've ever seen a Paul Walker movie. Didn't know him.
But when I saw pictures of him ... well, he was really good looking.
So ... was he a heart throb or more of a Man's Man?

Next: He starred with Vin Diesel in the F&F movies. Vin is very
popular among the Firefly fans (for Riddick & Iron Giant mostly).
So someone's sure to post an RIP thread for Paul. ... But no one has. [?]

Perhaps because no one did, it began to remind me of when James Dean
crashed himself in 1955. Yeah -- it's a bad comparison, those who
remember will say. The reaction and the endless publicity after Dean's
tragic death were very much like the reaction to the death of Elvis Presley.

RIP Paul Walker.

Paul Walker’s Death: Porsche Issued Memo About Dangers Of Carrera GT
http://hollywoodlife.com/2013/12/03/paul-walker-porsche-carrera-gt-war

/

"In the memo, the company warned just how powerful the $500,000
Carrera GT was. It read, “The Carrera GT is as close to a racecar
as we will ever get.”

However, besides being super fast, it also means it’s unsafe, just as
a racecar is.

“I think it is very important that the man who has gone to technical
training, at least is consulted before anyone drives this vehicle,” the
memo read. While Roger was an experienced driver, that may not
have been a problem. But the car itself couldn’t take any road damage,
according to the memo.

Porsche Carrera GT: It Can’t Go Over A Foster Beer Can
“The car cannot go over a speed bump without damage to the three
under panels… Believe me, this vehicle cannot drive over a Foster Beer
can that is lying on its side. It will crush the can and damage the
carbon fiber under the panels,” the memo said.

Adding that the car has “all the disadvantages of racecar,” this
includes the inability to go over seam heights and pot holes."

Oonj: I guess it's not a street car. ... only for the track?

I don't know cars, so this is based on what I read yesterday.

The car is not built for the Street, apparently. It can't handle small bumps
or other imperfections in the pavement. It's almost, but not quite, a race
car. So what's it for? For collectors like Leno to drive on a track?

Anyways, the car's rep is well known.
So ... how come the fellas took it for a joy ride? Duhh!

It seems to me now that the accident was totally unnecessary. They pushed
their luck. And it's infuriating to think of it that way.

Okay, here's my offering:
Quote:

ALERT: CATNADO
This is not a drill.

In the southern United Kingdom a few days ago, there was a real, live catnado—a tornado filled with kittens instead of, you know, sharks. Seriously.

According to the Belfast Telegraph stable-owner Shirley Blay described a “mini tornado” that lifted up a shed her granddaughter was inside. After destroying the shed, the tornado went on to suck up four feral cats in the yard. “They just went round like a big paper bag,” Blay said. (A rough rendering of the catastrophic event created by TIME is at right.)

This is clear evidence of the world’s first catnado. Fortunately, no one was killed in the resulting whir of fur, claws, and teeth, unlike the shark version. We’re still waiting on an octonado full of octopi, a sluggish slothnado, and a dogenado full of semi-literate Internet memes. http://newsfeed.time.com/2014/01/28/alert-catnado/#ixzz2riZS3vG7

Happily, "Ms Blay added that none of the people or animals involved were injured during the storm" ( http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/uk/tornado-lifts
-group-of-feral-cats-into-air-as-storms-and-floods-sweep-across-britain-29951579.html

I almost looked at that story. Didn't cause thinking, cats might have
been smashed into stone buildings by tornado ... or tornado whisked
them away, never to be seen again.

However, recalling the cat that survived a +40 story fall a couple
years back ... cats are still built real good.

If Life is good, Death is the Great Villain.
If Life is too hard, Death is the Great Escape.

As for Leonard, I hope he has a long way to go before he rests.

When asked by Frank Mancuso to executive-produce the
proposed new series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987),
Nimoy said, I thanked him and wished him well with the
project, but explained it simply couldn't work. I felt the
original Star Trek (1966)'s success was due to many factors:
the themes, the characters, the chemistry between the
actors, the timing (the future-embracing 1960s)... There
was simply no way, I told him, that anyone could duplicate
all those things and be successful with a second Star Trek
show. And so I opted out. While my argument sounded per-
fectly rational at the time, my ego was certainly involved.
When I said to Frank Mancuso and the assembled execs,
"How can you hope to capture lightning in a bottle again?",
part of me was really saying, "How can you ever hope
to do it without us?"...
You know, crow isn't so bad. It tastes like chicken.

[On March 18,] President Obama will correct a historical act of
discrimination next month when he awards the Medal of Honor,
the nation’s highest commendation for combat valor, to a group
of Hispanic, Jewish and African-American veterans who were
passed over because of their racial or ethnic backgrounds.

The unusual presentation will culminate a 12-year Pentagon review
ordered by Congress into past discrimination in the ranks and
will hold a particular poignancy when conducted by the nation’s
first African-American president. ...

The recipients, whom the White House announced Friday afternoon,
served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Hi. Is anyone else having trouble with ComCast?

I am.
One was a phone call from them saying I'd missed 3 months' payments
(untrue) & they were about to cancel my service. The next day, Sat.,
they sent me an eMail to confirm the changes I'd ordered to my account,
an upgrade which would raise my bill. That bit was also a news flash for me.
Now I hear they were Hacked on Saturday, & eveyone should change
their passwords.

Are all these errors due to their recent huge merger with Time Warner?
Or evidence that they need to charge us more without earning the
money? I'm guessing they totally don't know what they are doing
right now.

It's kinda hard to change providers out here in the boonies, but it can
be done. (sigh)

ETA 3/13 NM. I straightened 'em out.

OK. Been following the grim Oscar Pistorius trial. Shot his gf, Reeva, &
will be found guilty of murder or culpable homicide by a judge (no jury).

He has a good attorney. Dunno how good the prosecution is. However,
the lead investigator botched the case to start in mishandling of evidence,
so some of what they shoulda known, they don't.

With South Africa's super high homocide rate, cops must have a lotta ex-
perience with it, so why'd they pick this one to flub?

Also I took a dislike to Oscar and have little objectivity about it.

Yeah -- & how come he's so fast on blades? Lower weight have something
to do with it?

Obama awards Medal of Honor to 24 veterans, cites 'unimaginable' valor

http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-medal-of-honor-obama-
20140318,0,1728129.story#axzz2wMfXSY8u

"Three living recipients - Santiago Jesse Erevia and Jose Rodela,
both from San Antonio, and Melvin Morris of Florida, all Vietnam
veterans dressed in uniform - and family members of posthumous
honorees took turns standing by Obama as a military officer read
aloud the citations. The citations described harrowing battle scenes.

"Their courage almost defies imagination," Obama said. "When you
read the records of these individuals, it's unimaginable the valor that
they displayed - running into bullets, charging machine-gun nests and
climbing aboard tanks and taking them out; covering their comrades
so they could make it to safety; holding back enemies, wave after
wave, even when the combat was hand-to-hand; manning their posts,
some to their very last breaths, so that their comrades might live."
...
... "The president singled out Florida resident Mitch Libman, who
was in attendance, for helping inspire the congressional-ordered
review by trying to find out for decades why his childhood friend
Pfc. Leonard M. Kravitz of Brooklyn, N.Y., who remained at his
machine gun in Korea until he was killed, never received the Medal
of Honor. Kravitz’s niece on Tuesday accepted it on behalf of her
uncle, who also was the uncle and namesake of rock musician and
actor Lenny Kravitz.

"The Medal of Honor has been awarded to more than 3,400 recipients
since it was established during the Civil War. The medal is bestowed
"only to the bravest of the brave," the Army said."

Quote G: a song, "you always hurt... the one you love... the one
you shouldn't hurt at all."

Odd. It was a Mills Brothers hit in 1944 when I was a toddler.
But it never went away, I guess, like a basic trope. Yes, the
Pistorius predicament brought the song back to my mind, too.

The loss of his legs. Wiki: "Although both of Pistorius' legs
were amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old,
he competes in events for single below-knee amputees and
for able-bodied athletes."

I see minimal trauma re deformity; when we were babies,
we didn't have expectations, didn't know what's normal.
But yes, he'd discover later that he was a freak.

OCD is also an "inborn deformity" perhaps, characterized by
hyperactivity in the orbital gyrus. The gyrus being a nerve
cluster behind the eye ball? I dunno. ... My impression is
that between the legs & the brain, he had a lot to cope with.
But I do not think he has a clue even yet.

He thought she was an intruder? BS! Even if he did, he was
too far out of line to expect any mercy. You don't shoot what
you can't see. He needs to cool off.

Stolen Gauguin painting found in Italian retiree's kitchen
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/04/02/uk-italy-gauguin-theft-idUKBR
EA311H620140402

A painting by French post-Impressionist Paul Gaugin that was stolen
in Britain in 1970 has turned up hanging in the kitchen of a retired
factory worker in Sicily, Italian police said on Wednesday.

With it was a second missing painting by Pierre Bonnard, another French
avant garde artist of the late 19th century ...

The Gauguin oil-on-canvas, whose value police estimated at 10 to 30
million euros, is very different from the colourful paintings of Tahitian
native women he produced after leaving Europe for Polynesia in the
1890s.

I skimmed headlines about his testimony, but did not dig into it.

One thing seems contradictory. I read that in SA, if the defendant
testifies, then he is the 1st witness the defence calls. This is so
that he won't be influenced by others' testimony. Yet, I think the
defense did call someone ahead of Oscar.

There is no jury, but the Judge has 2 "assessors" to help out. I don't
know what they do, other than observe the whole trial ... the trial just
had a recess when one of them was ill.

Conspiracy Theory Poll, released 2 April 2013,
http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2013/04/conspiracy-theory-poll
-results-.html

4% of voters say they believe “lizard people” control our societies
by gaining political power.

Excuse me! Don't they mean "Reptilians"?
I actually thought I recalled more than 4% have that opinion. But ...
if only 4% believe it, does that mean the Reptilians have excellent
control of most human minds?

Of course, it does!

To start a thread about Conspiracy Theories or at least, the ones
that came true ... a fun & potentially interesting topic, a lesson
in expectations, but would attract more than the usual pure BS.

blessedness was only seen by flying

"Blessedness was only seen by flying" from a Chinese poem?
"xing fu, zhi zai fei guo de shi hou tou tou de qiao"

Richard Bach might have said it, is why I looked it up.
He wrote "the hugely popular 1970s best-sellers Jonathan Livingston
Seagull
and Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah."

Bachisms:

Rarely do members of the same family grow up under the same roof.

You are always free to change your mind and choose a different
future, or a different past.

If your happiness depends on what somebody else does, I guess
you do have a problem.

If it's never our fault, we can't take responsibility for it. If we
can't take responsibility for it, we'll always be its victim.

Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished:
if you're alive, it isn't.

Every problem has a gift for you in its hands.

This goes directly to something that's been needling me for about a month.

Of those who post in RWED, I'm probably the least informed on politics.
I understand principles, but am always clueless about current affairs.
My Neighbor S (MNS), who is a great venter of hysterical anger, often
directed at strangers, knows even much less about it than I do. This
doesn't stop her from making outrageous statements about politicians
and other famous people.

Inserting a comment from the Ronald Reagan's Benghazi thread by SGG:

"Agreed. It's embarrassing how these Obstructionists behave toward
the president. In all my years following politics I have never seen
such abject vitriol towards a sitting president."

Just so!

MNS has told me twice that someone ought to Off Obama.
This, of course, is an outrage. He is our elected President. If we don't
like them, we can impeach them. Killing them is totally unacceptable.
The antithesis of democracy.

On both occassions, I asked MNS why she felt this way, what the hell
had Obama done to warrant her rage? ... She had no answer, except
to repeat herself, over & over.

But finally, she came up with a response that satisfied her: I have a
right to my opinion!

That blew me away. Shocked me. I've known MNS for a long time, and
she considers herself an intelligent woman, so in spite of all her BS, I
accepted her as such ... shows how mundane our conversations usually
were. ... My shock was in realizing that she's one of the Sheeple, for
whom Reason is a foreign land.

A line from Storymark's sig: “Anti-intellectualism has been a constant
thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured
by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as
good as your knowledge.'”? Isaac Asimov

I feel that Asimov was one of my best teachers, BTW.

Sheeple do not reason. The reason they don't Reason is simple: They
cannot. The Reasoning gear-sequence-or-synapse is missing from their
brains. They don't know what it is and don't miss it. Their opinions, I
suppose, are based mainly on what satisfies them emotionally. And they
sincerely Do Not Know that they lack intelligence.

Getting Attention satisfies them emotionally; so some of them Troll a lot.

A great exercise in futility is to argue with the Sheeple-Trolls.
It's beating a dead horse. ... But we knew that.

Seriously fatal, recent avalanche on Mt. Everest.
Aftermath. Insight on the sherpa way of life.

Puja, pain, payments: Mourning in an Everest Sherpa village

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/12/travel/sherpa-village-nepal/

"Unforgiving land of few opportunities

Ang Tshiring, 57, was a high altitude cook.

For the past 15 years, during the climbing season, he spent one month
at Everest Base Camp and one month at Camp 2, at 6,100 meters.

Two months to earn $1,500, meant to last the year.

Ang Tshiring was famous for always showing happiness.

Climbers who knew him remember him as a funny man, laughing and
joking all the time, never angry, always kind. ..."

""All that matters now are the puja," says Ang Riku, his widow, refer-
ring to a series of prayers and rituals.

Her focus is on directing special prayers aimed at purifying and earning
merit for Ang Tshiring's spirit.

Nothing else holds relevance for her -- not the political demands of
the Sherpas, nor the discussions raging on social media worldwide,
nor whether someone will climb Everest from the Nepal side of the
mountain this year.

She's silencing her mourning and sorrow to give all of herself for
the benefit of Ang Tshiring.

The Sherpa follow one of the Tibetan sects of Buddhism, Nyingmapa,
and believe that 49 days after Ang Tshiring's death, his next life is
determined and he may reborn.

Ang Riku is concerned.

She says accidental deaths are a bad way to go."
