Yes, they're adorable, but just so ya know, encouraging them is a bad idea...
But yeah, Raccoons do this, they learn quick how to get what they want out of humans, who are total suckers, mostly.
FYI, they make lousy pets cause they get into EVERYTHING, are quite difficult to housetrain, have a tendancy to bite, chew on things, and most vets wouldn't touch em with a ten foot pole.

What really makes em a pain in the arse is that they communicate and cooperate, often to bizarre degrees, even with other animals, not to mention they're very smart, like monkey smart, pretty damn tough, and can survive on damn near anything.
You'll note they even have some sort of protocol established to split the "loot" amongst themselves even in this vid, thus ensuring maximum survival.

Two remarks -

If you offer free hand outs, of just about ANYTHING, you'll get more and more takers.

Doritos are like crack. To humans AND Raccoons.

Very cool video. Hard to imagine so many racoons in the same place. Once in a while I see a lone racoon on my property, but never in groups like that.

County Tracker & Animal Control guy to Oonj re Raccoons:

If you feed your pets outside, bring the food inside before dark.
( OtoH, the video Guy sure got a herd of 'em to come out in daylight! )
Raccoons are strong enough to bend our big no kill traps.
They are stronger than dogs twice their size & will take one out.
Don't try to make pets of them.
If we have to trap one on your property, we will euthanize it,
because there're are no more places to relocate them.

Keep the Shiny side up

I'm really puzzled as to where there would be that many raccoons in one place. Unless folks are feeding them continuously, doesn't seem like there'd be enough natural forage or garbage for that number to show up at one time.

It's really not good to feed wild animals end of story, let alone garbage like doritos. Then again, its not so good to feed doritos to humans either...

My neighbours feed the cockatoos and they become a noisy, messy menace. And they eat my lemon tree.

WISHIMAY

I used to have a birdfeeder for the spatzies when we first moved in and they started systematically removing facia. They made nests in everything, and by the following Spring I woke up to find our backyard just black, cars and roof covered in poo and they stayed for a month. I no longer feed the spatzies and keep a small bag of fire crackers by the door (of course it's not to scare off the migrating birds, I'm just a fan of randomly alerting my neighbors to my presence by means of small explosive devices)

Leave the undomesticated animals alone whenever possible. They were here long before us, and I'm sure they would wish us still NOT here if they could.

Those raccoons need a cull, though. Far too many for a healthy population. And the idiot feeding them needs to be smacked.

I can't be the only want who wants to slap that idiot upside the head for feeding wild animals like that. He's only making matters worse for the critters and humans, not to mention children and pets too. Oh sure, raccoon are use to feeding off of our throw away food. But this is making matters all that much worse. There had to be 50 of those little guys, coming out of the woods. I've never seen so many raccoons at one time. The more ya feed 'em , the less afraid they'll be of interacting w/ people, and when a person doesn't have any food, one hungry raccoon might get fussy and bitey. How cute and adorable will they be then ?

In FL , it's illegal to feed gators for very much the same reason. Soon they'll associate people with free food. Only gator bites are a bit more impressionable.

yeah a good slapping is due

Unless you want to study the impact of feeding preservative and salt laden food on animals in order to understand some of the dysfunction of modern society. I bet those racoons would be eating their own young before too long.

Wouldn't go that far, but yah it's not good for them - one of the opossoms here a while back, dubbed Rainbow since she liked to come out and play in the rain, apparently based her diet around stolen cat food and that didn't do her health any favors - she was also a little aggressive but found out that was cause she was pregnant.
Poor critter didn't survive to suffer too much complications from the cat food though, she got ended by a car (common round here) and most of her progeny didn't make it much longer either, except for Weeber, who decided to nest in my yard for safety, and despite my pity on the poor critter I still wouldn't feed him, he figured it out himself soon enough and migrated elsewhere.

We did have one raccoon who came over here from ecorse, behind the ice cream stand where people foolishly feed the damn things like that, and I swear he was the STUPIDEST raccoon I've ever seen, no woodscraft, clumsy, always making noise, he was more pet than wild animal... last I saw of him was him gimping around near the dock with a busted leg from falling out of a tree, the damn idjit.
Strangely enough, one of the actual wild animal femmes took a shine to him and produced a couple kits not quite as stupid as their daddy.

There was another raccoon when I first started on this site, Bummer, huge, very old, and clever in that he'd wait for the fruit to fall off the trees and ferment a bit, and THEN eat it and get blitzed, on purpose, he was kind of entertaining - funny thing is that the younger raccoons who had recently migrated here rejected his leadership, thus leading to their failure to survive the winter, whilst HE eventually kicked it of complications due to old age, and probably boozing.

Animals, especially in a semi-suburban environment, go where the food is, and if yer stupid enough to hand it to em, well...
Me, I get on with the local critters because of established familiarity, and some of em will stick close to my patrol rounds cause my presence alone keeps away some of their predators, which is fine, but I sure as hell don't feed em, no.

Although as of late I think the raccoons are in big trouble, cause abandoned housecat K-Ghost, who is now completely feral, has taken over their feeding grounds and recently attracted a couple followers, and she *HATES* them, shortly after she was abandoned they ganged up on her near the park dumpsters and damn near killed her, which left her side all patchy and scarred up where the fur is missing, and a couple months later she retaliated by catching one of those kits alone in the same spot and well...

Nature is not, and has never been, NICE.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I HATE RACCOONS. They are aggressive. They are strong and clever. They chew buildings to shit. Speaking of shit, theirs is a nasty semi-solid mess. They carry rabies. And they carry many damn parasites that will happily try to live in or on humans - some of those parasites are fatal. Nasty buggers. I HATE RACCOONS.

This is what friendship is about. Someone expresses a deepseated dislike and fear of something to a friend, and the friend wallpapers their living room with raccoon pictures. It's all about that generosity of spirit and shared sensibilities.

Also, you gave me a fun idea! Thanks.
