Staying In Sochi Is A Hilarious Adventure

The North American media has descended on Sochi, and...how do we put this gently? Sochi's not ready.

The athlete accommodations are fine, if a bit cozy and, um, social. But the media hotels, along with much of the hastily-built city infrastructure, are decidedly lacking. Three of the nine hotels in the mountain complex simply aren't done, and the ones that are open are dirty, unfinished, broken, or infested with something or other.

I love the Olympics! Can't wait to watch prime-time taped and packaged events when the results have already been splashed all over the internet in the morning. And having Bob Costas, the self-appointed authority on morality and everything else in the world, pontificate to the un-enlightened masses for two weeks is a priceless bonus.

I think Katie Couric was looking her finest when she was in Sydney, for the 2000 games. I remember seein' her on t.v. and thinking 'damn! Who's that ? She looks niiiice ! '

And they're going to know if you're using the toilet(s) the right way, because they have video surveillance in the bathrooms.

Yes, that's actually a thing that was kind of inadvertently admitted.

How did this country put on the '80 Summer Olympics ? I know the US didn't go, but did ANYONE watch ? No way were things this bad in Moscow, right ?

I guess most of the 50 billion for these Olympics was spent on the stadium and the opening ceremonies. I really liked the video projection stuff. And save for the one snow flake that didn't open up to form the 5th ring, the mechanical theatrics were pretty neat too.

Only thing missing ? A giant Ronald Reagan coming in and kicking the **** out of the whole place !

As expected, the non-stop inane blathering of the NBC commentators pretty much ruined the Opening Ceremonies. The worst was when the young girl was soaring through the sky with beautiful orchestral music playing, and the announcers wouldn't shut the fuck up for even a minute.

I also won't need to hear Scott Hamilton grunt and whine when an ice skater misses a jump or falls down to understand what happened. I think I'm gonna watch the whole thing with the sound off.

Why? Who said it was necessary or desirable to have people talk over everything? And their stupid petty political and social comments about every country while the athletes entered the arena was very annoying.

The networks say. They paid for the rights, so they can do pretty much what they want. If the sponsors have an issue w/ the product, they can complain or not buy w/ the network.

Yes, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. And I'm far from the only one who thinks NBC's approach to covering the Olympics is an affront to our senses and an insult to our intelligence. I long for the old days when ABC pioneered the coverage with Jim McKay at the helm.

So, you're comparing the NBC announcers , talking over a LIVE event, the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, to the FOX guys , talking over a REPLAY ( likely the 2nd or 3rd time shown ) , in a blow out game.

Really?

WOW. Complete comparison FAIL !

Day 4 - coverage is improving with more action and less fluff. I can't help but wonder how a person gets started in some of those alpine jump and rotate events. How do they even practice those moves? Putin looked totally enamored with the 15 year old Russian phenom ice skater Yulia Lipnitskaya. For a minute I thought he was gonna take his shirt off and run down to kiss her belly or something.

The Russian girl looks all of 10 or 12, but skates like ... I've no idea. Don't think I've seen the likes of her before.

*** WEEK 1 UPDATE ***

Putin actually did go down to the floor and give Yulia a kiss, but not on her belly. He also went over to American Gracie Gold and shook her hand, which was a nice gesture.

I liked that Slovenian skier Tina Maze who won a Gold Medal this week. She's definitely got it goin' on. Pop star and fashion icon of Slovenia ... Slovenia, who knew?

Japanese men's figure skater falls down TWICE and still wins Gold Medal!? And not little "bobbles" like Scotty Hamilton calls them, but full blown wipeouts. There's something very wrong with that event, not the least of which are their silly frilly costumes. Not one of the top six skated a clean program.

Americans Bode Miller, Shaun White, and Shani Davis all failed miserably in their quest for Sochi Gold. Must be all that vodka and all those lonely hot and horny European ladies.
