There was a sailor who said they were washed over with a warm wind, followed by a snowstorm. She said she "tasted aluminum" and they were joking about being irradiated.

Which does make it hard for me to feel sympathy sometimes, but most folks only known the damn near fictional fluff crap that passes for "history" in public schools, as opposed to the ugly realities of it, so deliberately inspired ignorance isn't really their fault so much, is it ?

I will say this much, you can thank the much-hated Hyman G Rickover for the US Navys nuclear safety record, and while martinet bastard he no doubt was, consider well just how impossible absolute nuclear safety is - would that we had another just like him overseeing our nuclear plants on land.
Would that Japan had one like him when they were building Fukishima.

Here's the thing: It's ridiculously easy to test for radiological contamination. No, you won't see (most of) the iodine that may have deposited on the ship, because the (most common) form of radioactive iodine's half-life is too short- 8 days. And you won't see the xenon because that's a gas.

But along with iodine and xenon you should expect to see all of the normal contaminants from a nuclear power plant: lots of uranium, cesium, plutonium, and strontium and a crapload of other minor contaminants. All of these are solids with half-lives long enough to form a detectable residue.

The Navy could EASILY put this to bed by testing the ship- and the crew- for radiological contamination. EASILY. Did I say easily? EASILY! The fact that they haven't released the results of such testing tells me that they

(1) Are either playing see no evil... "what I don't know won't hurt me (legally-speaking)"... and have refused to do the testing; or
(2) They've done the testing; the results show significant contamination; and they refuse to release the reports.

Either way, it sucks. Fucking assholes.

First of all, the US Navy isn't to blame here. The radiation came from the Fukushima plant, not anything our govt did. ( Other than come to the aid of fellow humans, after a massive tsunami event )

Second, if anyone is going to foot the bill for the soldiers, shouldn't it be the Japs and the company that built / runs the plant ? All our Navy did was show up and try to render assistance.

And as for the wise crack about helping Vets, it's well known that the Dems want to do nothing but slash military budgets to the bone, and then keep cutting. The description above fits for the Dems, far more than it does the GOP.

Testing for radiation may be easy, but so what ? Actually scrubbing a contaminated ship so that it's safe to work and live in, that's ...well, it can't be done. So, is the contamination a very little ? Or a lot ? It may very well be that the 4.3 billion dollar vessel needs to be decommissioned, dry docked and dismantled. Not sure if there's anything you can do with a contaminated AC carrier either.

Then there's the military angle here. Losing the best ship in the fleet , just a few years after its maiden voyage, well before its 50 years of expected service... would be a HUGE hit for our national defense. THAT is something you don't want others to know about, if there's any way you can keep such news a secret.

In a way, it was the Navy's fault: they headed towards a nuclear disaster, and were positioned downwind. Now, that was bloody stupid. Everything that happened from then on ... the potential contamination of the ship and the crew ... was a result of that order.

If the Navy is going to make it right, they should do the radiological testing. If they've done the testing, they should make the results available to the crew (who, BTW, CAN'T sue the Federal government) so that the crew can sue Tepco. In fact, our Navy should be suing Tepco. But, yanno, that would strain our relationship with Japan (who we depend on to provoke and contain China) so better to sacrifice a thousand or so crew members than make a stinky fart into our politics.

Meanwhile, Tepco has been continuing to cover up the horror that is Fukushima.

I'll give ya that. But there's still too much that's not known to really know where to place full blame. Was the skipper told where to put the USS Reagan, or was that left up to his discretion ? Probably never will hear how that part went down.

And down wind ? The wind can change on a dime, especially during a snow storm.. Good luck trying to play hide and seek w/ a radioactive cloud when you're driving a ship that's almost 1,100 ft long and displaces over 100,000 tons.

The SAFE place to put that would have been in the ship yards of Bremerton WA or San Diego CA.

Well, we LOVE nuclear energy! We pressed it on our friends and allies because (1) GE made a boatload of $$ from it and (2) it made plutonium for our (ahem) bombs. So no matter how risky, the DOE (which is mostly about nuclear and not so much about energy), the NRC (whose mission it is to promote the "peaceful" use of nuclear fission), and the IAEA (whose mission is ALSO the promote the "peaceful" use of nuclear fission among our friends and allies) got together in this tight top-secret military-nuclear cabal and squashed any bad news about nuclear fission. These agencies have done that since their inception, and continue to do it to this day.

AFA Three Mile Island, there was a lot more exposure than made it into the press, so the media were complicit in that nightmare as well.

There are a couple of things going on at Fukushima. One of them is objective, and that's pretty much what I write about- from the beginning, when I estimated the minimum amount of zirconium fuel-cladding that must have burned up, based on the minimum volume of hydrogen required for an explosion, all the way to now as I consider how many gigatons of contaminated water Fukushima will release into the Pacific before Tepco even thinks of removing the corium. The thyroid cancers and heart-muscle damage and brain development damage from internal radiation.

But there's a different part of Fukushima that I don't write about, and that is the horror of knowing what's going on in the nuclear reactors and throughout the whole site, and the terrible effect that has on the people who have to live there.

I spent some time looking for insight. Found a thermograph of an experimental reactor meltdown, which showed corium burning its way through the bottom of a reactor vessel like molten steel drizzling thru a colander. Pictures of the corium at Chernobyl. A video of a half-dozen elders who gathered at an Itate meeting-house for shelter, but who ran instead straight into one of the highest points of deposition. They were found there by a researcher who was just taking readings (because the government wasn't doing anything), his expression of subtle horror at his readings and the anxiety of the elders asking him if everything was alright... burned into my brain. These people are not only damaged but traumatized. What a nightmare. The current governments... ours (yes, Obama), Japan's (Shinzo Abe) and international (IAEA) are all anxious to bury the victims while still alive, smothering their plight in deep deep denial. I can't imagine what it must be like, to be living in such fear while everyone of importance, and most of the rest of the nation, continues to party and pretend that nothing is wrong (and if there is, the fault must be entirely yours).
