A Florida Republican has won a much-coveted congressional race which is being seen as an important test ahead of this year's US midterm elections.

David Jolly narrowly fought off a well-funded campaign by Democrat Alex Sink in the Tampa-area vote.

Mr Jolly had railed against the Obama healthcare law, suggesting it will be a major issue in November's elections.

High-profile politicians, including Bill Clinton and Paul Ryan, stumped for the candidates before Tuesday's poll.

'Obamacare' issue

Mr Jolly - who took 48.5% of the vote - will replace long-serving Republican Congressman CW Bill Young, who died of cancer in October.

The special election was held in the congressional district where US President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul was first tested.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has since been plagued by technical glitches and sluggish enrolment numbers, resulting in a glut of bad press for the US leader and fellow Democrats.

Mr Jolly, 41, campaigned on repealing the healthcare law - nicknamed Obamacare - while Ms Sink, 65, pledged to "keep what's right and fix what's wrong" with the legislation.

The battle for the 13th District seat was viewed largely as a precursor to the forthcoming national fight over which political party will control Congress for the final two years of Mr Obama's presidency.

The House of Representatives is expected to remain under Republican control, but only a six-seat swing in the Senate is required to wrestle control from the Democrats.

Mr Jolly's win means Republicans now hold a 233-199 seat advantage in the House of Representatives.

More than $11m (£6.6m) in campaign funds were pumped into the Florida race for adverts, phone calls and mailings.

"I have very good news tonight," Mr Jolly joked to his supporters in his victory speech on Tuesday evening. "No more commercials."

It was a nice surprise win for the unknown and vastly outspent Republican, but "crucial"? I don't think so. This special election is only for 8 months, and the voter turnout was a fraction of what it will be in November. Both sides seem to be able to find something in the results to pound their chests about, but I don't think it means very much either way in terms of predicting the future. Otoh, a win is better than a loss, especially in Florida.

He was an awful campaigner, he was out spent 4-1, Bill (The Rapist) Clinton came in to campaign for the Democrat and he still won. Why do I have a feeling that some seats the Dems think are safe are now not so safe.

Strange that outside groups outspent him going into the last week by a million.

The phony attack ads worked, and the R barely beat the D in a strongly Repub district.

It's not his "ideas" that scare me. He has none of his own. It's the money the Kochs spend to buy seats. They have lots of ideas, and they're all good for them and bad for us peons.

But still less than the Democrats spent.

That gave Obama the majority in the 2012 election.

Looks like that election is a bigger deal than I gave it credit. MSNBC's Chris 'Obamagasm' Matthews showed the Dem. fear today on Morning Joe when he said this:

FYI, the Democrat candidate was a woman. Her name is Adelaide Alexander "Alex" Sink. She ran for Fla. Governor in 2010 and lost to Republican Rick Scott. Better luck next time.

Glad you think of yourself as a peon.

And funny that you never seen to have any qualms about Leftist outside $ ( George Soros, ACORN, Unions, etc... ) but are ever so concerned bout the " un-American " Koch brothers.

The Tampa area (I-4 corridor) is demographically split

republican Bill Young previously held the seat from 1971 to 2013 (for anyone counting, it's more years than the fingers of both hands), when he died of cancer

there was no mention of turnout, but it was probably low, meaning that people looking for change probably dominated the election

Florida has NOT expanded Medicaid, a tactic used by republican-controlled states to make Obamacare unpopular

You missed the point, and missed what the Kochs are up to, but that's to be expected. The Citizens United decision was a gift given to them, wrapped in a bow, by the neocon Supremes. It let them buy elections.

Explain it why Koch $ is bad, and Soros $ isn't.

Go.
