Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

For those who enjoyed "Age of Global Warming", here's another one they can hang their hat on:
Quote:

Just when you think they can’t get any more fringey, the right-wing fringe moves the goal posts. Believe it or not, there are still some who think that the Earth is the center of the universe. No, really.

Hopefully, you’ve been able to pick your jaw up off the floor. I did the same thing when I first read about this. That there are still people who could believe that the earth is the center of the universe is bad enough. Add to that the belief that the Earth does not move and you’ve entered a world of true insanity. This world has a name: Galileo Was Wrong ( http://galileowaswrong.com/). And it has a king: Robert Sungenis is a rabid Roman Catholic who really misses the heyday of the Church. Because the Inquisition and Crusades were so much fun.

This return to the Dark Ages has resulted in a “documentary” called The Principle. In the film, Sungenis presents his cockamamie theory with the aid of CGI and some (I have to admit) rather pretty cinematography. He even managed to dupe convince actual scientists like Michio Kaku, Max Tegmart and Lawrence Krauss to be in the movie. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that they weren’t filled in on the premise.

But, to the shock of every Star Trekker in the world, Sungenis managed to get Kate Mulgrew to narrate. Our own Captain Kathryn Janeway! For you non-Star Trek nerds, that would be the Captain of the U.S.S. Voyager on “Star Trek: Voyager.” I think I can speak for every Star Trek nerd when I say, “She must have been under the control of the Borg!” I hope. [See below]

So, upon what amazing bit of heretofore unknown scientific knowledge does Sungenis base his geocentric theory? That would be the Bible. Oh yeah, you knew it had to be. And, as you might guess, there’s a book to be promoted. Galileo Was Wrong: The Church Was Right posits that the Church Fathers were correct in “… believing that the Earth, based on a face value reading of Scripture, was standing still in the center of the universe…”

No. No, they were not. But, in Sungenis’ wacky world, they were. And those nut cases Copernicus and Galileo were just wrong. But the Church, it was infallible. This is important to Sungenis because, he says, before Galileo the Church was “… in full command of the world, and governments and academia were subservient to her.”

Well, there’s your problem, Sparky. You’re stuck in the Dark Ages. Well, even more so than the rest of the right-wing fringe. Of course, with the average American’s knowledge of science being what it is (dismal), it’s probably pretty easy to convince biblical literalists that Galileo and every scientist since was flat-out wrong. With 1 in 4 Americans not even knowing that the Earth circles the sun — according to a National Science Foundation poll — it’s a simple step to believing that the sun revolves around the Earth.

Oh yes, Mr. Sungenis’ crazy doesn’t stop with his geocentricity. No, he goes much deeper; into the ugly and racist land of holocaust denial. But it’s even worse than that. Sungenis is a member of the radical Society of St. Pius X. He heads up the sub-sect, Catholic Apologetics International, which he founded in 1993. This is a traditional Catholic group which believes that the Jews conspired with Satan to destroy the Catholic Church. The Society is quiet about their existence (I didn’t know about them until now and I study this sort of thing) but, thanks to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is starting to have a light shone upon them.

One of the Society’s tenets is that the Holocaust never happened. That, along with ranting about the New World Order and the Zionist connection, has marked Sungenis as a conspiracy theorist of the highest order. He has been asked by his bishop to stop with the Jew-bashing and to stop calling CAI a Catholic group. But, as we all know, it takes more than a request from one’s superior to stop a truly crazy conspiracy theorist.

It’s bad enough that Sungenis is peddling his nutjob theories. Or that he’s writing anti-Semitic screeds. But presenting respected scientists as backing up his geocentric teachings and getting an actress beloved by Star Trekkers the world over to narrate his tripe? That’s just deranged. But, if you look at the hashtag for The Principle, you’ll be able to spot his motivation: #areyousignificant is a dead giveaway. If the Earth is the center of the universe, then we are more significant than the rest of the universe. You know, it’s rather sad, really, that ego can blind people so thoroughly. As for me, I know that, in the vastness of space, I am insignificant. That’s why it’s important to live as well as you can. In the face of our insignificance, living our best life is an act of defiance. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/04/08/kate-mulgrew-sun-revolves-arou

*No, you can relax; Kate Mulgrew hasn't lost her mind:
Quote:

Mulgrew took to her official Facebook page about an hour ago to address growing concerns that her involvement with The Principle, a documentary about how NASA is totally trying to hide the truth that the Sun revolves around the Earth from us or whatever, in some way reflected her own views.
Quote:

“I understand there has been some controversy about my participation in a documentary called THE PRINCIPLE. Let me assure everyone that I completely agree with the eminent physicist Lawrence Krauss, who was himself misrepresented in the film, and who has written a succinct rebuttal in SLATE. I am not a geocentrist, nor am I in any way a proponent of geocentrism. More importantly, I do not subscribe to anything Robert Sungenis has written regarding science and history and, had I known of his involvement, would most certainly have avoided this documentary. I was a voice for hire, and a misinformed one, at that. I apologize for any confusion that my voice on this trailer may have caused. Kate Mulgrew”

Now, you might be asking, “But Kate—you were the narrator! How did you not notice that this documentary was going to be full of terrible misinformation?” In which case, we’d like to point you to this passage of the Lawrence Krauss-penned Slate article she’s referring to, which is bafflingly entitled “I Have No Idea How I Ended Up In That Stupid Geocentrism Documentary:”
Quote:

I have no recollection of being interviewed for such a film, and of course had I known of its premise I would have refused. So, either the producers used clips of me that were in the public domain, or they bought them from other production companies that I may have given some rights to distribute my interviews to, or they may have interviewed me under false pretenses, in which case I probably signed some release. I simply don’t know.

We were pretty sure that Krauss, as well as the other cosmologists and theoretical physicists featured in the trailer, were going to be misrepresented—after all, none of them seem like the type to ignore fundamental theories of modern scientific thought and understanding. But, for him to not even remember being interviewed? That takes a level of deception and subterfuge that’s beyond anything we previously suspected of Robert Sungenis and his team, for sure. Of course, they probably meticulously edited Mulgrew’s script to ensure she was none the wiser as to their geocentric leanings.

Now that we’ve cleared up this matter and our faith in Captain Janeway has been successfully restored, we intend to take a page out of Krauss’ book and “stop talking about [the film] from today on.” There’s really no point in giving such a despicably anti-semitic and backwards-thinking person such as Sungenis any more of our time and attention. http://www.geekosystem.com/kate-mulgrew-not-geocentrist/

Kate's half hearted follow up still doesn't dismiss the fact that she had the script beforehand, and still chose to take the job.

So what. Means nothing.

I met Kate one weekend at Vulcan Events in Tampa in 2011. She was a very friendly guest. My wife and Kate really hit it off, and they talked for a ridiculously long time. After a while, I just sort of slipped away and went to get one of those giant pretzels.

In the Star Trek "Captain's Log" dvd set, Kate gives extensive insight into Voyager episodes that she and the fans selected as the best ones. She also answers general questions about her experiences doing the show for so many years.

Actually, that's not deranged, it's pretty smart. Might gain him some ( false) credibility.

But as far as Kate goes, "I'm just a voice for hire." She's correct-- she signed a contract, she read the words in her script, she got paid. You can fault her for some sort of ethical lapse, maybe, for not refusing to read the stuff, or suggest that what she read was re-edited later without her knowledge to distort the meaning of what she read, but she did her job. Maybe shoulda turned the entire thing down, but that's a different moral question.

I she? That's interesting...I don't know much of anything about the newer Star Trek crew as people (except Stewart, of course), and never formed much of an opinion about her, except she did a good job and I kinda liked the character. We know so much about the original Star Trek actors after all this time, but I've never seen any of the other newer ones in interviews or read anything about them.

And yes, "paid voice". I should think the actual scientists who were been manipulated would be more pissed off. The whole thing is kinda silly, for me the only thing it shows is how there are still some who are SO wrapped up in the Bible being "right" that they will go to such amazing lengths.

Historically, it was the libtards who cannot think for themselves and only repeat what they're told who have believed in Flat Earth and the Sun revolves around the Earth. Not including members of The Flat Earth Society.

I am not surprised of the lack of tolerance displayed by the libtards overall, and as thread-starter here.

Actually JSF, Liberals are less fearful of change than Conservatives- a scientific study demonstrates it.
But, being neither, I might not fully comprehend the mentalities involved from a first-hand perspective.

Yeah, Chris, all it is, is evidence of HIS mentality. Why would anyone be upset by the politics of an actor/actress in a TV series? Beats me...

Ok, now Im suspect.

This is the most "trying to sound like an over-the-top wingnut kook" sounding post Ive read in some time. On the surface, its staggeringly stupid, but on a satirical level, it works in a number of ways.
