Brandeis University's Decision To Cancel Ayaan Hirsi Ali Appearance Has Done Liberals No Favors

Yesterday, it suddenly became very important to focus our attention on the upcoming commencement ceremony at Brandeis University -- which is ordinarily something that most of the wide world outside the Brandeis community could frankly give two figs about. But here's what happened. Brandeis had intended to bring author and -- I guess -- "thought leader" Ayaan Hirsi Ali to their commencement festivities, bestow her with an honorary degree and let her speak to students and fellows at a diploma ceremony and a celebratory breakfast.

Well, as of yesterday, all of that is off. In a statement, the Brandeis said: "She is a compelling public figure and advocate for women's rights, and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls throughout the world ... That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University's core values."

So, what's all that about? Well, Hirsi Ali is a figure of some controversy, don't you know! She has been a strong voice against such barbaric practices as female genital mutilation, and the more totalitarian aspects of Islamic sharia law that oppress women, such as so-called "honor killings." Personally speaking, I am glad she has done such things. However, she is not of the mind that Islam is a legitimate religion that has been, in some instances, tragically co-opted in some benighted corners of the world by nihilistic death-cults. She does not believe it is possible for a moderate or Westernized form of Islam to exist. She has said so: "There is no moderate Islam." And so, she has called for the complete destruction of Islam existentially.

I do not hold to that view -- in fact, I find it both risible and farcically contrary to my own experiences -- and she will just have to jolly well accept that. But the reverse is also true, and herein lies the problem we have been presented with, thanks to Brandeis University. Whether they know it or not, the actions they have taken have done way more harm than good. To anyone with a liberal-minded attitude toward freedom of expression, Brandeis' decision has done you no favors. Let's break it down, shall we?

Excerpt:
One year ago, the city and suburbs of Boston were still in mourning. Families who only weeks earlier had children and siblings to hug were left with only photographs and memories. Still others were hovering over bedsides, watching as young men, women, and children endured painful surgeries and permanent disfiguration. All because two brothers, radicalized by jihadist websites, decided to place homemade bombs in backpacks near the finish line of one of the most prominent events in American sports, the Boston Marathon.

All of you in the Class of 2014 will never forget that day and the days that followed. You will never forget when you heard the news, where you were, or what you were doing. And when you return here, 10, 15 or 25 years from now, you will be reminded of it. The bombs exploded just 10 miles from this campus.

I read an article recently that said many adults don't remember much from before the age of 8. That means some of your earliest childhood memories may well be of that September morning simply known as "9/11."

You deserve better memories than 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing. And you are not the only ones. In Syria, at least 120,000 people have been killed, not simply in battle, but in wholesale massacres, in a civil war that is increasingly waged across a sectarian divide. Violence is escalating in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Libya, in Egypt. And far more than was the case when you were born, organized violence in the world today is disproportionately concentrated in the Muslim world.

Another striking feature of the countries I have just named, and of the Middle East generally, is that violence against women is also increasing. In Saudi Arabia, there has been a noticeable rise in the practice of female genital mutilation. In Egypt, 99% of women report being sexually harassed and up to 80 sexual assaults occur in a single day.

Especially troubling is the way the status of women as second-class citizens is being cemented in legislation. In Iraq, a law is being proposed that lowers to 9 the legal age at which a girl can be forced into marriage. That same law would give a husband the right to deny his wife permission to leave the house.

Sadly, the list could go on. I hope I speak for many when I say that this is not the world that my generation meant to bequeath yours. When you were born, the West was jubilant, having defeated Soviet communism. An international coalition had forced Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait. The next mission for American armed forces would be famine relief in my homeland of Somalia. There was no Department of Homeland Security, and few Americans talked about terrorism.

Two decades ago, not even the bleakest pessimist would have anticipated all that has gone wrong in the part of world where I grew up. After so many victories for feminism in the West, no one would have predicted that women's basic human rights would actually be reduced in so many countries as the 20th century gave way to the 21st.

Today, however, I am going to predict a better future, because I believe that the pendulum has swung almost as far as it possibly can in the wrong direction.

When I see millions of women in Afghanistan defying threats from the Taliban and lining up to vote; when I see women in Saudi Arabia defying an absurd ban on female driving; and when I see Tunisian women celebrating the conviction of a group of policemen for a heinous gang rape, I feel more optimistic than I did a few years ago. The misnamed Arab Spring has been a revolution full of disappointments. But I believe it has created an opportunity for traditional forms of authority—including patriarchal authority—to be challenged, and even for the religious justifications for the oppression of women to be questioned.

Yet for that opportunity to be fulfilled, we in the West must provide the right kind of encouragement. Just as the city of Boston was once the cradle of a new ideal of liberty, we need to return to our roots by becoming once again a beacon of free thought and civility for the 21st century. When there is injustice, we need to speak out, not simply with condemnation, but with concrete actions.

One of the best places to do that is in our institutions of higher learning. We need to make our universities temples not of dogmatic orthodoxy, but of truly critical thinking, where all ideas are welcome and where civil debate is encouraged. I'm used to being shouted down on campuses, so I am grateful for the opportunity to address you today. I do not expect all of you to agree with me, but I very much appreciate your willingness to listen.

She speaks the truth from experience on the treatment of women in the Muslim world. Add to that Islam's position on homosexuality, and how it's dealt with in Islamist countries. One can only wonder why Libtards support and defend these savage neanderthals.

But I believe Muslim women in Islamic countries have been so sytematically brutalized all their lives that they would vouch for every single monster that ever laid hands on them. And what about Gays in the Muslim world? Since being gay is a genetic thing as opposed to a choice, one can reasonably assume there are at least 100 million gays and lesbians living within Islamist countries. Not being able to get married to another gay person is probably the least of their problems. Yet we don't ever hear much from them on how they just simply get by in their lives.

I referenced this in another thread, but this should be interesting to see how it plays out....

Some Cleveland Hopkins cab drivers refuse to drive with Gay Games signage

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Some drivers of the zone-based taxis operating out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport have notified their companies they don't want to drive the cabs for religious reasons, citing rooftop placards that are advertising the upcoming Gay Games.

Hopkins released a statement saying that two of the three taxi companies operating at the airport -- Ace and Yellow Taxi – were informed by several of their drivers they will no longer participate in the airport's dedicated taxi cab program.

Patrick Keenan, general manager for the third company, Americab, said two of his drivers also have opted not to drive because of the Gay Games ads. The drivers are Muslims, Keenan and Hopkins spokeswoman Jackie Mayo said.

The drivers told their companies that their decision was based on religious reasons, Hopkins said in its statement.

Seems we can make Christians make and sell gay wedding cakes and take gay wedding photos, but apparently the line is drawn at making Muslims drive w/ gay game ads or be forced to transport gay customers.

Colorado's Masterpiece Cakeshop At Center Of Gay Rights Battle

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The encounter at Jack Phillips' Masterpiece Cakeshop lasted less than a minute.

Phillips stepped out from behind the counter in his small, pastry-crammed shop to meet customers Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins. They told him they wanted a cake to celebrate their own marriage.

Phillips replied he couldn't, but that he'd be glad to make one for other occasions, such as birthdays. Left unsaid was how making a gay wedding cake would violate his Christian faith, how he does not make ones for Halloween or bachelor parties, either.

Nothing more hi-larious than female genital mutilation and honor killings, eh Chrissy ?

Was the difference too subtle for ya ? The phony political tactic of the Democrats, vs the actual real subjugation of women by the religion of Islam ?

Sure, there's a tiny minority with in a group, and because of that, the Left tries to make it all about the ENTIRE group. For purely political reasons.

Yeah, I've had the dogma repeated to me, many times. I'm still not buying it.

I think most would rather be in those countries than just about any Islamic ruled nation. And that's where I have a problem w/ the Left's contrived ' war on women ' crap. And if a woman gets raped in Saudi Arabia, she might get killed, because she didn't fight back hard enough, which clearly is a sign that she wanted it, so she wasn't REALLY raped at all.

That law & laws just like it are being worked on with God's own fervour. You can be sure many places will pass one, not Federally though (I hope). I'm not gonna bother with links to Republicans stating why these laws should be enacted 'cause you'll just dismiss them for whatever reason.

Primarily because I'm not a Republican, for starters. Is that a good enough reason ?

I fully agree that the life which comes from the case of rape is indeed innocent. But rape or not, I feel that a woman ( or teenage girl, for that matter ) who gets pregnant has every right to end a pregnancy she doesn't want, provided it's with in the first trimester. No questions asked.

Innocent, but it may be a life which would inherit whatever gene the psycho rapist father possessed that allowed him to be what he was. Better to let that soul go to fill a cleaner embryo.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

A lot of these responses are almost correct, and some are outright wrong. Businesses can refuse service for almost any reason (or no reason) with exceptions. Those exceptions at the federal level are race, religion, gender, national origin, and disability/perceived disability (refusing service based on sexual preference does not violate any federal law). Some states have laws covering all these categories plus sexual preference, and some also include transgendered persons and transsexuals.
News Flash: It’s Already Legal to Deny Service to Gays in Arizona
Arizona’s laws already give businesses the right to discriminate against gays. Sexual orientation is not included in Arizona’s public accommodation laws. Discrimination against gays is actually legal in a lot of places in America still.

You asked for me to back up my claim, and I did.

Nothing in your post dismisses or in any way debunks the point I made.

So immature or insecure are you, that you simply cannot simply admit you were wrong, and I am right.

You've instead chosen to go off on some tangent, which wasn't even part of the discussion.

I doubt he is capable of understanding, at this point.

Its these amazingly bone headed stands he takes that makes it impossible to take ANYTHING he says seriously, even on the (extremely) rare occasion that he actually has a decent point.
