notice the applause - because slavery is apparently about taking people's choices away, not buying, owning and selling people as property

Donald Sterling To Receive NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award

Donald Sterling, the Los Angeles Clippers owner who was reportedly caught on tape making racist comments to his girlfriend, is set to receive a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP in May, according to the organization's website.

Or, he WAS , until this latest fiasco.

But even BEFORE his ( illegally ? ) taped remarks, this guy had a track record of racist views and actions.

So, how much $ had he given to the naacp to buy their blessing?

Preserving this weasel for posterity:

"Mr. Sterling is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings. Because, apparently, someone else's brain was moving his lips. It is the antithesis of who he is, what he believes and how he has lived his life. He feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him because, even though they came out of his mouth, they must have been someone else's words and apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by them.

"He is also upset and apologizes for sentiments attributed to him about Earvin Johnson. He has long considered Magic a friend who really should not be seen IN PUBLIC with his family or REAL friends and has only the utmost respect and admiration for him -- both in terms of who he is and what he has achieved. We are investigating this matter to try and figure out damage control."

OONJERAH - We are too dumb to live and smart enough to wipe ourselves out.
"You, who live in any kind of comfort or convenience, do not know how these people can survive these things, do you? They will endure because there is no immediate escape from endurance. Some will die, the rest must live."

Didja see the thing about the black soccer player? Some fan threw a banana at him-- a racist insult, it implies, "You're a monkey." So he picked it up, peeled it, took a bite, and then kicked the ball.

Interestingly, Kiki...as I was driving home from running the dogs this morning, and heard some of the shit about Sterling on the radio, my thoughts turned to posting pretty much exactly what you did about both him and Bundy, with a similar title. Given how we've discussed this here before, and how often some of our right wingers adamantly insist racism IS "essentially" dead, it seemed apropos. Thank you for saving me the trouble.

I just listened to the tape. Wow. Amazing. The whole thing revolves, for him, around his girlfriend posting pictures of herself and "black people" on Instagram, or bringing them to the games. SHE's black/latino, and he says she can do anything she wants with black people PRIVATELY, but on Instagram and at his games...
Quote:

…. that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings…

Then what DOES it reflect, I wonder?
Quote:

…attributed to him…

How does one "attribute" words that come out of a person's mouth? Very weird…

The convolutions of his thinking completely, absolutely escape me...

I see The Donald says Sterling was "set up" by the girlfriend from hell: "It's terrible. He got set up by a very, very bad girlfriend, let's face it," Trump said on Fox & Friends. ( http://politix.topix.com/story/11770-this-celebrity-says-donald-sterli
ng-isnt-the-only-one-to-blame-in-race-remarks-fiasco
)

How does one get "set up" into saying things like this:
Quote:

“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?”

“You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.”

Don’t put him [Johnson] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” http://nba.si.com/2014/04/26/donald-sterling-nba-investigation-racist-
comments-clippers
/

And Rushbo is sure Sterling's only 'in trouble' because he didn't donate enough to Obama: "...this guy's a big Democrat. The only reason he's in trouble right now is he did not give enough money to Obama." ( http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2014/04/28/mock_shock_donald_sterlin
g_is_a_typical_hollywood_racist_and_everyone_knew_it
)

Except, he isn't. According to the Los Angeles Board of Elections, Sterling is a registered Republican, who first registered in California in 1974. The state database's records have listed him as a Republican since 2002. He voted in both the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/04/28/donald-sterl
ing-is-a-republican-and-has-given-money-to-democrats-this-does-nothing-to-explain-his-history-of-discrimination
/)

Then there's Bill Kristol, who thinks everyone's going "hysterical" over what Sterling said: "I mean, everyone goes hysterical over two or three sentences, but let's look at the actual deeds of people." ( http://www.thewire.com/politics/2014/04/of-course-donald-trump-and-ale
x-jones-have-joined-the-defenders-of-donald-sterling/361319
/)

Well, let's see, while I saw a lot of anger and disgust from quite a few people, I must have missed the "hysteria". And from what I read, it's a bit more than two or three sentences, but let's not quibble. Let's look at "deeds":
Quote:

In 2009, Sterling, who also owns a slew of apartment buildings in the Los Angeles area, agreed to pay $2.725 million settlement — the largest monetary payment ever obtained by the Department of Justice — to settle a housing discrimination suit. http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2009/November/09-crt-1187.html

That's a start, I guess...and there's the employment discrimination lawsuit by the former longtime Clippers executive, wherein Sterling allegedly said he wanted to fill his team with "poor black boys from the South and a white head coach". But of course, that's just words again... Or there's all the past racist behavior, which the League has carefully ignored, at http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-sterling-racist-history-2014-4

Oh, and then of course Alex Jones, over there at Infowars, wants to see Sterling convicted in a court of law as a racist before anyone calls him one: "Keep in mind Sterling is so far an alleged racist". ( http://www.infowars.com/obama-sharpton-magic-johnson-gang-up-on-nba-ow
ner-sterling
/) How does one become a "proven" racist (or would that be "convicted" racist I guess), since saying racist things isn't illegal, I wonder?

The contortions of these people are amazing...ridiculous, but amazing.

Quote:

After getting burned by racist rancher Cliven Bundy, Fox News, the Tea Party, and others thought they had their gotcha moment when they claimed Clippers owner Donald Sterling was a Democrat. The problem is that he’s a Republican.

The right was still licking their wounds when they got busted for elevating Cliven Bundy to hero status when the Donald Sterling tape became national news.

Immediately, Matt Drudge claimed that Sterling was a Democrat:

GOT GAME: NYT informed the unwashed how Bundy is a Republican. Leaves out NBA Sterling is a Democrat…
— MATT DRUDGE (@DRUDGE) April 27, 2014

The Tea Party News Network ran the headline, “Donald Sterling Is A Racist Democrat.” Fox News’ website Fox Nation claimed that Sterling is a Democratic donor, and above their headline featured an image of the Obama and Democratic Party logos. Yep, the right finally had their own Bundy equalizer. Their very own racist Democrat. See, both sides really do do it.

The problem is that Donald Sterling has been a registered Republican since 1998.

LA Times columnist Michael Hilzik tweeted:

Mother Jones followed up with a search of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s website that confirmed that Sterling is a Republican.

The fact that Sterling is a Republican does not mean that all Republicans are racists. In fact, his political affiliation doesn’t change Sterling’s vile comments in the least.

What is on display once again is the mechanism through which millions of Americans are intentionally misinformed every single day. Republicans and their media were looking to get the stench of Bundy’s racism off of themselves, so they latched on to inaccurate story that Donald Sterling is a Democrat.

Fox News and others can’t be bothered with fact checking. All they cared about was finding a racist to pin on Democrats so that they could even the score.

For conservative media, facts are irrelevant. It’s all about finding a way to justify their own racism, and adoption of race based political tactics. Most of the conservatives who claimed that Sterling is a Democrat still have not corrected their articles, and the truth is that many of them probably won’t.

The point is to confuse and muddy the waters. If Republicans convince people that Democrats are racists too, their own racism doesn’t look so bad.

Instead of solving the problem, Fox News and the rest of right wing media made it worse, because Donald Sterling’s political affiliation is now an issue, and the Clippers owner now shares a spot with fellow Republicans Ted Nugent, George Zimmerman, and Cliven Bundy in the Republican Racist Hall of Shame.

They tried to spin it, but failed. Sterling is a Republican. Sorry, racists, but it's not a case of "they do it, too."

Assuming racism CAN be done away with, she did have a bold role in that fight.

Do you not agree ?

Seems to me that's an optimistic statement about ending racism, and praising her actions to sit down for justice.

Goodonya, Rosa !

ETA - cites ? And a couple , off the cuff remarks do not make a declaration for an entire political party, do they ? I guess you'd say they do.

But I doubt very much they speak for the entirety of anyone. Certainly the GOP has not made any platform declarations to that extent. Nor have the Dems, for that matter.

So, the worst kept secret in all of sports, that Donald Sterling is, was and will be to the end of his days, a racist.

And now he's been banned from the NBA - for life.

Only, he's saying he'll fight to keep the team which the NBA commish has vowed he'll force Sterling to sell. This should get interesting.

There's a whole back story ( or conspiracy ) to the reason why all this is being played out NOW. The short version is, the league wanted this guy out as owner. Best way to do that ? No, not have him suicided, but maybe the next best thing. Have him humiliated and forced to sell. In comes Magic Johnson, who is instant gold in the city of Angels, and Voila! Problem solved !

Anyway, it appears Sterling will NOT get his second award from the NAACP. It seems he'll have to settle as having the same number of awards as Dr. Ben Carson, and 1 more than US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Not too bad for a slum lord and overt racist.

Stay true to the cause, NAACP !

1. People stop needing to feel superior by belittling those who are different.

Yeah, that NAACP award is quite disturbing, and odd, given his track record. But his days as an NBA owner are numbered. Why!? you might ask, because he signed on the dotted line. The NBA Commissioner is a highly regarded attorney, like his predecessor, and no slouch when it comes to contracts.

And Sterling's expertise is in divorce litigation. Anyway, he signed an agreement that includes binding arbitration, which no judge in this country would ever undermine (it's a business thing). So he has to abide by the Rules & Regs of the NBA Agreement. They need 23 out of the 29 remaining team owners to vote him out. I believe Silver got commitments from 25 owners.

Bye, Bye Sterling.

Stiviano's lawyer said his client was a hard-working young woman who supported herself waitressing and volunteered helping crime victims before signing on to work as an “archivist” for Sterling.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office confirmed that Stiviano did clerical work and helped explain legal procedures to victims as a volunteer in the agency’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program in 2010 and 2011. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-v-stiviano-saddened-nba-do

Or if you prefer the vaulted FauxNews:
Quote:

The lawsuit claims that Sterling first met Stiviano at the 2010 Super Bowl, and “initiated and participated in a sexual relationship” with Sterling that lasted until the filing.

There is some question about Stiviano’s profession. According to the Los Angeles Times, Stiviano has been listed as director in advertising material for the Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation.

TMZ reported that sources close to Stiviano said her relationship with Sterling is professional—that she worked for years as Sterling’s "archivist" as well as for a Clippers charity. http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/sports/2014/04/28/who-is-v-stiviano-o

Where ya hearing that figure ? I heard some naacp spokesperson claim it was " insignificant ", but would not offer an amount.

So, next time anyone , even a billionaire, gives you $ 50K, be sure to scoff and roll your eyes at it.

I'm afraid I can't give a direct location as to where I heard it. It may have been on Morning Joe, or some other show on MSNBE, but 50 grand was the high number. I want to say what I heard was 15 to 50 thousand. I watch many different news outlets and on this I can't remember. Sorry

So 15-50k will get an established & known racist a lifetime achievement award ( or 2 ) from the NAACP ?

Huh. I did not know that.

My guess is that Sterling gave MUCH more, but that's all the NAACP will fess up to. It's not like Sterling will be able to call them out on if, if he's gonna try to keep the team.

It's hard to really get all the info on something like this. It is just sad money will corrupt all. Eventually we will breed our way out of a lot of this bigotry but history shows we will find other ways to separate ourselves from the each other. All it takes is a river, lake or mountain range to spawn separatist thoughts. To coin an old term, people from the other side of the tracks.

I'm still wondering if the NBA will institute lifetime Bans on all of the following:
Any player who utters the N word at home, club, or the court of play.
Any player who utters the B word at home, club, or on the phone.
Any player who utters the slang term for prostitute at home, club, or on the phone.
Any player who utters a derogatory slur for gays at home, club, or on the phone.

Pretty amazing that a guy who did nothing wrong, in any legal sense, gets into this much trouble.

He broke no laws. He didn't drive drunk or do drugs. He denied no one their rights. He used no racial slur. And he was at home, having a private conversation.

And for uttering his asinine views, he loses his franchise ownership, gets fined 2.5 MILLION dollars AND banned from the NBA for LIFE. ( well, for a few years, probably )

I'm glad he's getting hosed. Just wished they got him in a less devious manner. He's been a dirtbag for quite a while.

SHINYGOODGUY

The story goes that he asked her to tape his conversations because of his lapses of memory, hence the "his permission" part. He knew he was being taped because he requested it.

TMZ most definitely checked the legal side of this story because they wouldn't want to get sued. Then Sterling would own much more that the Clippers. Besides California has a state law against taping people without their knowledge, she would have been arrested.

How is what I said 'dumb' ?

He broke no laws. He didn't drive drunk or do drugs. He denied no one their rights. He used no racial slur

Meanwhile...

NBA player Ron Artest -

Artest was suspended for three games in 2003 for destroying a TV camera at Madison Square Garden, and for four games the same year for a confrontation with Miami Heat coach Pat Riley.[70] He was also suspended for two games in the early 2004–05 season by Pacers coach Rick Carlisle after he allegedly asked for a month off because he was tired from promoting an R&B album for the group Allure on his production label.[70]

Pacers–Pistons brawl

On November 19, 2004, Artest was at the center of an altercation among players and fans during a game in Auburn Hills, Michigan between Artest's Pacers and the home team Detroit Pistons.

The brawl began when Artest fouled Pistons center Ben Wallace as Wallace was putting up a shot. Wallace, upset at being fouled hard when the game was effectively over (the Pacers led 97–82 with less than 50 seconds to go), responded by shoving Artest, leading to an altercation near the scorer's table. Artest walked to the sideline and lay down on the scorer's table. Reacting to Wallace throwing something at Artest, Pistons fan John Green threw a cup of Diet Coke[10] at Artest, hitting him. Artest jumped into the front-row seats and confronted a man he incorrectly believed to be responsible, which in turn erupted into a brawl between Pistons fans and several of the Pacers. Artest returned to the basketball court, and punched Pistons fan A.J. Shackleford, who was apparently taunting Artest verbally.[11] This fight resulted in the game being stopped with less than a minute remaining. Artest's teammates Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson were suspended indefinitely the day after the game, along with Wallace.

On November 21, the NBA suspended Artest for the rest of the regular season, plus any playoff games. All told, Artest missed 86 games (73 regular season games plus 13 playoff games), the longest suspension for an on-court incident in NBA history. Eight other players (four Pacers and four Pistons) received suspensions, without pay, which ranged from one to thirty games in length. Each of the players involved were levied fines and ordered to do community service. Several fans were also charged and were banned from attending Pistons games for life. Artest lost approximately $5 million in salary due to the suspension.[72]

Plenty or racists up in Boston, it would seem.

Boston Bruins fans blew up Twitter Thursday night following the team’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

P.K. Subban ended up scoring the winning goal in the fifth minute of the second overtime.
Fans showing disappointment would have been completely understandable. But many of them took it to a whole other level, seeming following in the footsteps of Donald Sterling.
Because of our corporate policies, we can’t put this type of profane language on our website, so here’s a summary of just some of the tweets we found:
– That stupid n***** doesn’t belong in hockey #whitesonly
– F*** YOU N***** SUBBAN YOU BELONG IN A F****** HOLE NOT AN ICE RINK
– PK Subban = F****** N*****
– F*** PK Subban. F****** n*****. Wish he got sold
– subban is the definition of a n*****
– Someone needs to smack PK subban across his big n***** lips. #scumbag
– SUBBAN IS A F****** PORCH M*****
– F*** that stupid m***** #subban
– F*** you subban you f****** lucky *** n*****!
– Once again, Subban stop being a n*****
– N***** was trending in Boston because P.K. Subban scored… It’s a rare moment in my life to be ashamed to be a Bruins fan.
– I bet the Bruins fans calling P.K. Subban a n***** on Twitter have no idea his brother plays for their minor league team.
– the hashtag #N***** is trending in Boston after Subban’s goal. Do they tweet this after a David Ortiz HR? f*** off Boston, be better.
– N***** trending in Boston- #NHL another sport with issues
