Another Ice Age?
Monday, June 24, 1974

In Africa, drought continues for the sixth consecutive year, adding terribly to the toll of famine victims. During 1972 record rains in parts of the U.S., Pakistan and Japan caused some of the worst flooding in centuries. In Canada's wheat belt, a particularly chilly and rainy spring has delayed planting and may well bring a disappointingly small harvest. Rainy Britain, on the other hand, has suffered from uncharacteristic dry spells the past few springs. A series of unusually cold winters has gripped the American Far West, while New England and northern Europe have...

I commend Newsweek and TIME from scrubbing their actual cover images from the interwebs.

Wouldn't be proper to have folks reminded of how effing wrong they were, or ARE now, would it?

Here's the article, anyways...

The Cooling World
By Peter Gwynne
28 April 1975

There are ominous signs that the Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production — with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now. The regions destined to feel its impact are the great wheat-producing lands of Canada and the U.S.S.R. in the North, along with a number of marginally self-sufficient tropical areas — parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indochina and Indonesia — where the growing season is dependent upon the rains brought by the monsoon.

The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it. In England, farmers have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950, with a resultant overall loss in grain production estimated at up to 100,000 tons annually.

During the same time, the average temperature around the equator has risen by a fraction of a degree — a fraction that in some areas can mean drought and desolation. Last April, in the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded, 148 twisters killed more than 300 people and caused half a billion dollars’ worth of damage in 13 U.S. states.

To scientists, these seemingly disparate incidents represent the advance signs of fundamental changes in the world’s weather. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century. If the climatic change is as profound as some of the pessimists fear, the resulting famines could be catastrophic.

“A major climatic change would force economic and social adjustments on a worldwide scale,” warns a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, “because the global patterns of food production and population that have evolved are implicitly dependent on the climate of the present century.”

The REALLY funny thing is, someday you'll be a really old geezer and your grand kids will have fun with you.
"You had fossil fuel in your day, Grampa?"
"We did, and we LIKED it that way!"
"But burning it helped cause the Weatherchange of the early 0's."
"It did not, nothing happened, the Earth is as it was meant to be."
"Ha ha, Grampa yer so funny."
"I'm NOT KIDDING!"
"Love the mock anger, Grampa- you do it so well."
"I'm leaving!"

I have explained this in detail before. I don't expect the Rap to recall anything that depends on actual reality, but we may have new posters who will absorb and appreciate factual information.

The "Impending Ice Age" "scare" of the 70s was due to a few idiots in the press. (Go figure.) Newly available computational models coupled with ice core data supported the theories of Milutin Milankovitch, who had predicted that the Earth's orbital variations contributed to climate variations. The 1976 paper:

Hays, J.D. John Imbrie, and N.J. Shackleton. "Variations in the Earth's Orbit: Pacemaker of the Ice Ages." Science. Volume 194, Number 4270 (1976). 1121-1132.

This showed that the Earth was nearing the end of a 20,000 year inter-glacial period. A few morons (like the Rap) who don't *get* science but who wanted to make a buck selling headlines wrote some alarmists articles about the impending ice age. The real scientists ignored them and pursued the new discovery.

Forty years later it's been well documented that the Earth should, according to overwhelming evidence from the past several cycles, be slowly but surely entering a new Ice Age. It is not. These natural cycles (that idiots like the Rap spout off about without any actual understanding) have been interrupted, which is due to changes in the climate that humans have brought about.

Here are two excellent references if you want to understand what's really happening, rather than being a whore of the petroleum industry and parroting Faux News and alarmist idiot journalists from the 70s:

http://www.amazon.com/Plows-Plagues-Petroleum-Control-Climate/dp/06911
46349

The impact on climate from 200 years of industrial development is an everyday fact of life, but did humankind's active involvement in climate change really begin with the industrial revolution, as commonly believed? Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum has sparked lively scientific debate since it was first published--arguing that humans have actually been changing the climate for some 8,000 years--as a result of the earlier discovery of agriculture.

The "Ruddiman Hypothesis" will spark intense debate. We learn that the impact of farming on greenhouse-gas levels, thousands of years before the industrial revolution, kept our planet notably warmer than if natural climate cycles had prevailed--quite possibly forestalling a new ice age.

http://www.mark-bowen.com/book_ti.html
Surprisingly, since the book was originally published in 2005, Gavin Schmidt at RealClimate selected Thin Ice as one of the more interesting books to have crossed his desk in 2007. Gratifying as well, since it indicates that the book remains relevant to a team of people who truly understand climate science and the global warming issue.

"Thin Ice by Mark Bowen gets a big thumbs up as well. It is more or less a biography of Lonnie Thompson, but as I said in my review in BAMS, it is by no means limited to Thompson’s work. Much of the book focuses on various important figures in the history of the science of climate: Arrhenius, Tyndall, and Keeling among them. And while paleoclimatology takes the main stage, one could read this book alone for a very clear lay-persons understanding of the physics of the greenhouse effect, or for insight into the mind of the brilliant and provocative James Hansen, or the story or Roger Revelle and David Keeling's measurements of carbon dioxide concentrations. It is notable that Bowen has a PhD from MIT, so is no newcomer to science."

I'm just not conned into buying propaganda as you are. And there are plenty of others scientists who see nothing going on here that isn't natural, but I'm sure you'll call them names too.

Anyone with an active frontal lobe want to discuss the actual science? The Rappy bitch-slapping was too easy. I put him over the edge already. (Breathe into a paper bag, little Rap. It might help with the hysteria.)

BTW, I really do recommend Thin Ice. Such a good read on many levels. I've raved about it before on RWED: excellent easy to understand science, a true adventure story (these guys spend months in the high altitude death zone - all for science!), and also insight into the politics and business behind scientific advances.

Oh - but for now... Go Bruins! :)

Stupid dinosaurs though, huh? They were no more prepared to do anything about it than we are today.

The guy who wrote the story for that edition you claim was real, was the same guy at the end of the link I sent you too. The real cover was the third cover below the other two. You are claiming he is the one who wrote the story. He says the cover is a fake and the real story is completely different than the cover suggests. Read it again if you wish but the proof is right in front of you. It is time magazines site, he is the supposed author and both time and he say it is fake.

Rappy if you can not admit to this, then I present this as prof that truth does not matter to you, only your Ideology does.

"The reality is that scientists in the 1970s were just beginning to understand how climate change and aerosol pollution might impact global temperatures. Add in the media-hype cycle — which was true then as it is now — and you have some coverage that turned out to be wrong. But thanks to the Internet, those stories stay undead, recycled by notorious climate skeptics like George Will. Pay no attention to the Photoshop. It’s the science we should heed — and the science says man-made climate change is real and very, very worrying".

I worry so much about our seas. Between the crap we load them with, the warming of them, and the influx of fresh water, we may all be in for a tough time sooner rather than later.

A word about 'natural. vs 'unnatural.'
IMO Man is part of nature. It was natural of us to develop technology. It is natural of us to pollute.
We may make stupid, short-sighted decisions, we may piss away our resources, we may deny the results of our choices like the Rapped-not-too-tight one, but it's all 'natural.'

Chasing Ice is a real eye opener. You would appreciate it. I like what you say about natural so let me give you a new perspective about why some who run things do what they do.

Look for articles about those in positions of power. Specifically how many or what may be the percentage that suffer from the mental illness called sociopath. It explains a lot. Take the Koch brothers. How else after achieving billionaire status could they still pollute the local water supply in a community rather than spend a bit more to do it right. We need to get these people out of positions of power. Only governments can do that.

You're right. Even though Faux has pushed these memes over the years, they're just pushing memes.

The two fallacies are the fake magazine cover and an editorial from the Examiner.

I'd take you for a religious person, if I didn't know you weren't.

Wanting to believe isn't knowing. Posting fallacies doesn't help your argument, but it is a great troll.
