I snagged a player on eBay for $38 WITH shipping, and played my first two movies on it, and I have to say, I'm quite impressed. The colours are noticeably deeper & richer, and fine detail is crystal clear. I'm not tempted to replace my entire DVD collection, but my favourites will definitely get upgraded bit by bit.
So, have you taken the plunge yet, or are you still all Fred Flintstone-ing it with your ancient DVD technology?

I've been blu ray for a while. Just for fun I got a blue ray copy of Casablanca and what it even does for a black and white movie is amazing.

I gotta make a gorram list...

Made the switch years ago. It is a noticeable improvement, and Im not even running at it's highest resolution (I have a 720p set, which started to fritz out a couple years back - I promised I wouldn't buy a new one till it quit, and it just WON'T FREAKIN' DIE).

I certainly haven't replaced my whole collection, but I certain titles, which Ive gotten in every available format, did get the upgrade (Firefly, Star Wars, Indy, Blade Runner, The Thing, Alien(s), LA Confidential....ok, so a few).

Oh, and the remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation sets are wonderful.

Talked to a guy who sells used media the other day. Said he literally can't GIVE away blu-rays.

Sorry buddy, it's just a niche market. In five-ten years just about everyone will be streaming. Deals are in the works now, just you wait and see.

I don't want any more junk cluttering my house. I just gave away the last few VHS tapes, and I have Netflix so if I ever really really wanna see it, just "add to queue"

My Son streams most of his stuff.
I want my OWN copies of movies. No 'line problems', no 'slow lane' pauses. And BR looks better to me than the best HD stream.

Of course in the future, it'll all be streaming. But that leaves you at the mercy of the rights holders, and when and where they chose to make them available.

Plus, Im a film collector - the cloud means diddly to a collector. Vinyl is a niche market, too - but its still there (and their sales have been growing for the last few years).

And for now, streaming doesn't offer the same picture quality as physical, and if the service providers are able to put the data caps on that they want - won't be any time soon. So Im glad to have them for a number of reasons.

Funny. I was just watching Cabin in the Woods, which was by random chance the first Blu-Ray DVD I bought. I'm not the best judge because I bought the Blu-Ray player along with a big ole plasma screen which was the first modern flat-screen I owned. My previous TV was a crappy cheap little bitty pre-2000 thing. I couldn't even read the score banner during hockey games on that old screen.

Hey - I don't do home TV much.

I do love the Blu-Ray. I don't know if I'd really notice not having it, because as I said - not much experience with quality home-viewing before this. But some stuff looks very nice on it. The Avengers, for instance. :)

My bluray player player is 3D, which sadly my plasma screen is not. The next TV I buy will be 3D. I know some folks get headaches, but I looove 3D.

OK. I don't know what that means. I bought my plasma a few years ago because plasma is on the way out and it was pretty damned cheap for a big screen. I forget how big. 48"? Big enough, it ought to be, though with blu-ray I find myself wanting a bigger screen.

And 3D. :)

I've been Blu-Ray since PS3 came out. You're right, the colors are deeper and richer, at times you can count the stubble on an actor's face. The sound quality sometimes doesn't quite reach up to it's full potential, butthat could be due to my TV (which has surround sound).

Still though it's pretty awesome watching my Blu-ray collection. By the way, DVDs get upgraded automatically. From what I've read, Sony makes the best in the business.

I agree, the cable and streaming services will be in control of content and they'll twist the screws to squeeze out more money from us. Besides, I'm also a movie fan and nothings beats having your own copy of classics and the like.

Plasma is good, supposedly it will burn out faster than LCD. 1080P is the highest, and there's also how many Hz (Hertz) 60Hz is standard and the level used by Broadcast TV. Some TV sets have 120Hz and 240Hz.

Wait, let me tell you that 720P is pretty damn good. The P is for progressive. 720P performs at 60 frames per second, it is better for showing pictures with plenty of motion - action movies and sports. Of course 1080P is top of the line.

Plasma was once the gold standard, but LCD TVs have made improvements by leaps and bounds. The size of the TV screen depends upon the size of the room it's in. I have a 42" TV in my living room, which is 20 x 12, it's a perfect fit. You also need to sit no closer than 5-9 feet in front of the screen for the best viewing.

For a 720P at 48" you should sit no closer than 9' to get the best view.
You can find viewing distances on the internet, it's called TV viewing distance calculator. Hope that helps.

That one's in my top 10 most awful ever, heee!

As for me, no - too expensive, too many technical DRM/Bullshit hassles, epic FAILURES (See Also: Digital Destruction) and just overall not worth it.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DigitalDestruction

In these new BluRay + DVD combo packs, I keep the DVD and give the BR away, if I can, otherwise I just throw it out - ESPECIALLY this latest...

See, I bought the last model PS3 cause I DO NOT WANT a "connected" console dependent on the whim of others for my content or access to it, and when I put in the BluRay of the Live-Action Space Battleship Yamato, which took me forever to find...
=INVALID ENCRYPTION, PLEASE CONNECT INTERNE... ARRRRGGGHHHHHH!
*ripsoutpowercableyanksdiscfrommachineandthrowsintocatlitterbox*

Over. My. Rotting. Fucking. CORPSE.
I will not, never, under any circumstances WHAT SO EVER, allow any access to that machine by ANYONE BUT ME, period, end of story, THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT IT, and why I physically tore out the wireless board soon after, when it tried to connect without consent.

And frankly, the picture and sound quality on The Avengers Blu-Ray was IMHO actually WORSE than the DVD version.

Sooooo, Blu Ray can suck me.

One common problem you may discover is making sure all of your inputs and outputs along the way are compatible, from the disc to the player to the cables to the TV. You don't want to push a 1080p image through a 720 output, and old school 480 content is kind of missing the point to watch on a 1080p tv (upsampling is better but only so much).

Some people are looking at early 4K sets (huge price drop by Sony to gin up interest), but there isn't 4K content yet, not much at least. The Netflix drama is being released in 4K, but just like the early days of any new format, it'll be a slow rollout. Remember HD players?? I actually know some fool who bought 4 Serenity disks in HD thinking he would give them to libraries and friends and be though of as a swell person. Ehhh! (Anyone need an HD Serenity disk?)

If you see a 4k tv with the right content, the image has 4 times the detail, and you can see it, it's amazing, it's so sharp it hurts, but you have to wonder: is that really better? Do I really need to see more detail in Kevin Spacey's face?

Good info, just one thing I'd add is that even the connections can make a difference. Be sure all of yours are HDMI.

I got BR mostly for older movies that previously had a crappy transfer on standard DVD, like the theatrical BSG movie (OMG does it looks all kinds of awesome in BR!!), and Logan's Run... Westworld...

I'm floating around in the Void....

I can download movies and TV shows in 1080 and watch them in all of their glory on my 27" computer screen, but I hate watching movies on my computer.

I have to find 720 versions which can be streamed wirelessly to the original modded XBoxes I have on every TV. MKV's dont work at all. MP4's work, but for some reason "fences" are a problem with the new video formats. Seeing how Walking Dead's prision years had plenty of fences, I probably did myself an injustice watching season 3 and 4 the way I do.

Why can't I still download AVI files?????

I feel the growing pains Chris.

Wouldn't bother buying a BluRay player at that price since I haven't bought a CD or DVD since I cancelled my Columbia House subscription back in 1996, but I think that technology is making me upgrade.

Having an AWESOME computer case is tits.... True. ;)

I really need one of those TV tuners though. I see absoulutely ZERO commercials today unless I happen to be pouring a cup of coffee in the breakroom or at a friend's house.

As awesome as that sounds, it's really super-not-normal. When somebody finally showed me the "Hump Day" commercial on YouTube 2 months after it came out I didn't find it funny at all since I'd probably heard it referenced at least 100 times. I bet I would have laughed if it wasn't a stale rerun of a 70's comedy by the time I finally saw it.

It's cool that you got into computers when you were 50. Most 50 year olds I know only know enough about computers to facebook or youtube or email. Actually, nearly half of them wouldn't have ever owned a computer if their jobs didn't dictate it.

I put my first computer together when I was 17. My friend Paul was HUGE into computers and we went to a Computer Show at some pavillion years back and we bought all of our necessary parts and split the cost of Windows 95 (back then you couldn't get it for free... :()

He knew some way where we could validate both of our computers with it. It worked and there were never any problems.

The oldest part I have in my PC now is a SoundBlaster from 2003. That was always the case... As much as I'd canaballize parts and upgrade, the soundcard always had the longest lease on life.

I envy my brother for all of his "perfectly working" Mac stuff and the customer service at times when my PC is being tempermental. I forget really quickly about any of those gripes though when I remind myself that I could have put 80% down on that Charger I've always wanted to drive with the money I've saved by DIY.

Shit's always breaking here.

Wow.... I never thought I would relate to Kaylee....

No shit, huh?

I separate my TV/Movie watching completely from my computer things, but I can seriously lay on my couch watching an entire season of a show I love commercial free in a 12 hour stretch only taking brakes to prepare food and go to the bathroom. It's called "TV Binging" or "Binge Watching"..... Just one more addiction on this freight train to hell, I suppose.

I don't even have a TV that does above 720.

Still won't watch a movie on my small 27" computer monitor on a chair though, even if it does 1080.

Can't wait till a smart 50+" TV is available to me for a few hundred bucks.

It's only a matter of time.

I'll be buying used XBox 360's for 50 bucks with shipping on ebay by this time next year, and I'll be reprogramming them to do my bidding. My bro pre-ordered for $400 with the smallest hard drive they made back in 2004.

I'll be able to buy more than 10 for what he paid 10 years ago.....

I'll never have a problem watching streaming MP4's or MKV's with fences again!

ahhhhh....

if only People were so easy to re-program....

I mean, re-programming people is totally do-able, but it just takes so much effort.

Seriously, at the end of the day, what's the ROI?

Screens themselves are pretty cheap - you could have a giant Movie screen and smaller ones for computing and one computing power box with terrabytes of storage locally and one keyboard, all for cheaper than we do now.

George Orwell fortold all of this.

Remember kids, that exact same co-axial cable that has brought MTV into your house since 1983 is the exact same cable that allows 1080 video-conference transmission in real-time today.

Interesting thought.

Question: how much detail is too much detail?
I was watching The Living Daylights today on Blu Ray and I found myself distracted from time to time by facial wrinkles & skin anomalies not previously visible on DVD...
