There was a 39 percent decline in gun homicides between 1993 and 2011 and a staggering 69 percent decline in non-fatal firearms crimes.

Given the horrific rampage that occurred yesterday near the UC Santa Barbara campus and widespread media coverage of similar incidents in recent years we could be forgiven for believing that the United States is experiencing a surge in violent deaths. But as best as one can tell from limited data, this isn't the case. America's murder rate remains high compared to rich countries in Europe or Asia so people are right to be alarmed by the level of violence, but the good news is that it seems to be falling.

More murder statistics are here: www.vox.com/2014/5/25/5749316/us-murder-rate-decline

Shooting deaths are up 32% in NYC since they stopped "stop and frisk." The gun control wackos will blame the gun instead of the fact that this guy watched violent video games and the fact that he was nutz.

Are you scamming? New York Public Housing shootings are up 32% since stopping Stop And Frisk. Public Housing. Public Housing. Unless you live in NY public housing, why care? www.truthrevolt.org/news/new-york-public-housing-shootings-32-stopping

NYNY crime has dropped 3% since the beginning of the year - yet crime in public housing projects has jumped by the same amount. Shootings at NYCHA developments have surged 32% to 74 - representing more than a fifth of all shootings in the city.

Public Housing that is in the Bronx, the Bronx is in NYC. So shoots are up 32% in NYC, correct?

Next time there's a mass shooting that doesn't involve a gun, let's talk.

Meanwhile, gun nuts say "It's not the guns that are the problem. It's the mental illness."

And we continue to do nothing about either one.

Meanwhile, conservaderps will wonder if violent video games have any impact while claiming that violent rhetoric from the right can't possibly have any impact.

One thing that all mass shootings have in common: guns. That's the common link.

Again! These shootings are happening in NYC! My math is fine, just because it's happening in one area it's still in NYC! PLUS this is black on black crime, would this be a bigger story if white people (like white cops) were killing black people? Were's Al (The Rat) Sharpton and Jesse (Baby Daddy) Jackson? Or do they only care if a black person dies at the hand of a "white" person? Black on black crime isn't news, white on black crime is...fact.

If one person lives alone in a house, and that person is shot, then shootings went up 100% in that house.

However, if that house is in a city of 10 million, shootings in that city did not go up 100%.

You keep saying that shootings in NYC are up 32%, when you've been corrected more than once and told that shootings in PUBLIC HOUSING IN ONE AREA OF NYC are up 32%.

You literally cannot see the mistake you keep making, because you are stupid. That iron-headed steadfast stupidity in the face of facts also explains why you're a conservative.

Buried deep in the articles about this crime is the fact that three of the six people Rodger killed were stabbed to death, not shot.

He also ran down people with his car before he started shooting, do we need more "car control" too? He was a woman hating, violent video game playing spoiled loonatic. Yelling for more gun control won't cut it here.

Yepper, after guns, knives, and cars, we'll probably have to go after rope, and sharp sticks, and big rocks.

Did ANYONE notice that this kid's mom is Asian, and HALF of the people he gunned down were Asian?

Imma thinking this kid just had some REAL mommy issues... Or Tiger Mommy issues????

So, Miker, if they decided that everyone that has a mental disorder, or brain damage, should be excluded from owning a gun would you give up YOURS??

The only reason I let my husband (who has Aspergers) have them is because he's on medication to control his anger issues. If he ever wants to go off it, I'd ask *nicely* for him to sell them, but I don't have any real recourse that doesn't include calling police and criminalizing him that I know of...

Maybe there should be a mental health/gun safety hotline that isn't backed up with a swat team?

Good thing all the social misfits who can't get a date don't go on a shooting rampage.

Good thing all the low self-esteem ex-dodgeball targets don't go on a shooting rampage.

Good thing all the stay-in-their-room video game loners with shitty self-absorbed parents don't go on a shooting rampage.

Good thing that shrinks have professional ethics restrictions regarding patients' privacy rights, even when any layman could easily predict their patient would go on a shooting rampage.

Every day that there isn't a shooting rampage is a miracle.

Mr. Rodger passed background checks to buy all of his guns. He had no criminal record, had not been adjudicated mentally defective, and did not meet any of the criteria for denial on Form 4473.

What "better" thing would you want on background checks?

This guy was seeing several therapists. He was posting hate filled manifestos on line. His family was worried sick he might do something. But none of this prevented him purchasing legal firearms, nor did it prompt the police to remove firearms. Your laws around guns are truly screwed.

Per your link, California is one of only seven states that does not require mental health records to be submitted to the NICS system. Maybe they need to consider doing something about this.

I agree. Per our laws, even if his therapists or family considered him a danger to himself or others, they could not report him to the National Instant Check System or to the police unless he was adjudicated mentally incompetent by a court.

Seriously? If you are a therapist and someone is saying that want to kill others, the police can't take action?

Dont therapists and police have a duty of care to protect the innocent, or do gun rights override that?

If your system is too unweildy, it wont work.

Actually, most laws like that were put in place to protect the rights of people with mental problems. Mental health professionals have to be careful about reporting possible violence to the police to avoid being sued, and courts are hesitant to declare folks mentally incompetent to avoid placing a stigma on them.

Here's an article in Psychology Today that explains the part of the profession's viewpoint on mandatory reporting of possibly dangerous folks. They don't like it.

"When your heart breaks, you choose what to fill the cracks with. Love or hate. But hate won't ever heal. Only love can do that."

This thread is about Elliot Rodgers from May 2014. He was a victim of Doctors prescribing both psychotropic drugs Xanax and Vicodin, which had already been known to create mass murderers, serial killers, and cause homicidal ideation.
While the Doctors at fault here are not held responsible in any way.
MD immediately jumps to the guns running arounbd stabbing 3 people to death, and the gun that was driving the car trying to kill people, instead of the Drug Doctor Laws in USA which are totally screwing us, allowing Drug Doctors to run about unfettered having spree murders.

I remember back during my social drinking days that popping vicodin while drinking was all the rage. I didn't see it done too often at local house parties, but when I went to college parties it was all over the place.

It almost seems quaint now compared to the widespread abuse of oxycodone along with methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The entire drug industry should be behind bars. From the CEO's all the way down to the pharmacists.
