Abstract

In two online studies (total N = 1215), respondents completed personality inventories and a survey of their Internet commenting styles. Overall, strong positive associations emerged among online commenting frequency, trolling enjoyment, and troll identity, pointing to a common construct underlying the measures. Both studies revealed similar patterns of relations between trolling and the Dark Tetrad of personality: trolling correlated positively with sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, using both enjoyment ratings and identity scores. Of all personality measures, sadism showed the most robust associations with trolling and, importantly, the relationship was specific to trolling behavior. Enjoyment of other online activities, such as chatting and debating, was unrelated to sadism. Thus cyber-trolling appears to be an Internet manifestation of everyday sadism.

You gotta buy the rest of the paper to get the details, but it is discussed in a Slate post:

Quote:

That’s bad, but it’s nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).

It is hard to underplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What’s more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet.

In the study, trolls were identified in a variety of ways. One was by simply asking survey participants what they “enjoyed doing most” when on online comment sites, offering five options: “debating issues that are important to you,” “chatting with others,” “making new friends,” “trolling others,” and “other.” Here’s how different responses about these Internet commenting preferences matched up with responses to questions designed to identify Dark Tetrad traits:

The key determinant of both psychopathy and trollishness appears to be a measure of are they an asshole Y/N

It's nice to know some facts are simple and some universal truths are blatantly obvious. They built this city on rock and troll, and the more you interact with the internet, the more your own behaviour will adapt.

Beware, internet IS trolls.

Internet is a wide variety of people, not necessarily smart,
with something to say, not necessarily interesting.

If I tire of trolls, there are moderated forums.

In my youth, an eon before the internet, people who enjoyed
socializing, conversation & attention were considered healthy.

Those who did not were labeled undersocialized, antisocial,
likely a sociopath.

Labels are great weapons.

Once I found Serenity

Hey MAL4PREZ:

Mistakes do happen but not this time. When I did mistake your post for being hostel towards me, (the other post) you could have just pointed it out. After all you did recognize it as being a mistake and not directed at you? It does get a little confusing all these posts and all. So why did you respond the way you did????

I see with you, it is self praise your into. I love reading how you have my personality figured out. How you are so hip to me. So, your the groups psychoanalyst. I have enjoyed watching you slink in and out of conversations. Reappearing long enough to school the rest of us on our delusions or ignorance as perceived by you, only to disappear again. A bit of a narcissist huh.

"Again I can do nothing but point and laugh. I have not argued with "Miker" before tonight. On purpose. To flush you out".

This is a quote from you and appears to me to be narcissistic and even sadistic behavior. What do you think, your the expert?

"Sig undergoes an extreme change in personality after I poke her/it about her years-old symbiosis with Rap".

Another quote from you. You're so hip to us all. Yep, the psychoanalyst. I love the way you explain to the other participants in the thread what you are up to and how you have proceeded so brilliantly, because with you, that's what its really about is it not?

Which is why you have this link in your signature:

http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57532
"Peer-reviewed scientific paper: Internet Trolls are Narcissistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, and sadistic".

Yeah, you have to show all how you are so brilliant and can stalk your victim coming in for the kill with your super wit to expose our psychosis. You pick something here someone said and pick something there someone said, because really, offering some new insight into the discussion is not what you are about. Coming to the rescue is. Trying to be everyone's champion is. After the setup of pretending to offer some new truth( which is usually little more than something you have cut and pasted ), you character assonate the one you have picked for that particular performance.

"Trolls are Narcissistic", and judging from what you have written in the posts I am responding to, I would say that title fits you just fine.

Your problem is, you have no arrows in you quiver.

Nope, not impressed at all.

"Again I can do nothing but point and laugh. I have not argued with "Miker" before tonight. On purpose. To flush you out".

That quote is pretty sadistic don't ya think? Both narcissistic and sadistic. Quite a combo.

My turn to flush you out. How do you like it? I waited for you to respond to this post in the other thread, but like I say above in this post, your style is to post and run, in and out. Your little quote here is just a small part of the smart ass posts about me in the other thread. Now this post will show up every time you send someone hear with your signature. Well, on the topic at hand...

Conservatives, Evil and Psychopathy: Science Makes the Link!
http://www.alternet.org/conservatives-evil-and-psychopathy-science-mak
es-link?paging=off¤t_page=1

Quote:

The core ideology of conservatism stresses resistance to change and justification of inequality and is motivated by needs that vary situationally and dispositionally to manage uncertainty and threat,” Jost and his co-authors wrote in the abstract. These are not merely American phenomena, nor is there any reason to think they’re particularly modern.

Really, nothin new to me here, as I been sayin for years that modern "conservatism" is naught more than the same old better-men bullshit which was old even when that apologist Plato codified it, and not true even then.
It's also so critically interlinked with things we've found to be symptoms of mental illness that the two are all but one and the same these days.

One of the few, vanishinly rare cases where the usually rhetorical "They're all fucking nuts.." might be an accurate assessment after all.

All this is why it is better to walk in the middle of the road. Be your own person.

Logical fallacy. If you're given two options... 1+1=5, and 1+1=11, the correct answer is NOT the middle of the road/ average of the two (8).

Let me put this a little more floridly- Did YOU make that road? Because if you didn't, you can hardly claim to "be your own person". In fact, you are just as defined by the road (that someone else built) as the person who chooses to walk on either edge.

Or, as an old Texan once told me- the only thing in the middle of the road is a yellow line and dead armadillos.

Quote:

The ultra Liberal is not better than the ultra conservative. Both are destructive behaviors.
If there were a person inside of Nazi Germany engaging in "destructive behaviors"... hiding Jews, for example.... you would have counted them as heroes. One person's destructive behavior is another person's heroism.

The answer to this conundrum is twofold:

1) Decide your ethics. What is right? What is wrong? Why? That might take ten years, but will give you your compass.
2) Look around you at the real world, without the filter of desire or fear. That will show you the obstacles.

Once you do that, you'll really be your own person, on your own road.

MIKER, you just disagreed with your first post. When you define a person's actions as ultraliberal or ultraconservative, you're using society's definitions as a reference, not some internal/individual code. That's because ultraliberal/ultraconservative have socially-accepted definitions. If that's not what you meant to say, you should rephrase.

As far as "I thought we were not to address each other..." ... um, was this something WE agreed on? Or is this just a thought that popped up in your head, all by itself? I could come up with really snarky examples of me saying the same kind of thing, like... oh... "I thought you weren't going to post at all anymore..." but fortunately for you this IS an open forum. And it's a good thing that I don't do what you think, just as you don't do what I think.

Fuck societies definitions.

Case in point, a lot of my actions, attitudes and beliefs could be called "antisocial", if not outright evil, simply because they happen to be in polar opposition with, or hell bent on the destruction of, the society in which I live.

WITHOUT REGARD TO THE NATURE OF THAT SOCIETY.

Is that clear enough ?
Frame of reference - if a society was corrupt, and you refused to be, if it was racist and you refused to be, sexist and you refused to be... etc etc, and worked towards the destruction or mitigation of those fucked up "values", do you know where you'd be placed on a standard alignment chart ?

Chaotic Evil.

And here's an even better summary, and note WHO it comes from.

(Obligatory Slam Required)

Ain't Siggys fault you're too goddamn STUPID to comprehend what she just told you cause your willful and deliberate ignorance creates a psychological blind spot so big you could drive a freightliner through it - and you look even dumber when you call a common logical process, which you obviously lack, "gibberish" because of it.

Free yourself of all that and stop trying to apply metaphors to my metaphor. Look at what you posted in response to my middle of the road comment. It was all based on me not understanding what my statement implied. That’s pretty funny or a bit arrogant, take your pick.

I dont see what Signy is saying here to be gibberish. I understood her point to be about where the middle of the road is....it depends of the middle of what. I give you a concrete example. In America, centre of politics is considered right of centre by European/Australian standards. That is because the political spectrum has swung to the right over the past 20 or so years. It may swing back the other way, and then the 'centre' might be more left. It all depends on what you compare it to.

I see people who say they walk the middle ground are often just trying to keep the peace. Maybe that's fair enough, I've certainly done it on occasion. But walking the middle ground can also mean collusion with the current system. Also could be okay if your current system is not corrupt, violent, and riddled with inequality.

Most ideas for change are considered dangerous at one time or another. The thought that women might be able to vote (let alone hold a political office) was once considered extreme. If you sat in the middle on this issue, as many people did, women would never have been able to vote.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So, nothing to do with this recent conversation - but on topic - I mentioned in another thread a while ago how I ran an experiment for myself and decided to troll. For me that means posting things I KNOW aren't true, just to wind people up, then snarking and running.

I think I got two (maybe three) posts out before the stench in my mind was so awful I couldn't take it anymore. And it took weeks to disappear entirely. It was my way to understand what the feeling is that goes with trolling. And I agree with all of the above - Narcissistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, and sadistic.

And last week some of the people at work - far more savvy about the internet than I - pegged rappy as a troll within 3 seconds. And basically instantly dismissed him with a shrug as if to say - why would you waste your time on that? Isn't there something more productive you'd rather do?

So, trolling - an interesting topic.

If Signym wants to express how she may be confused, by suggesting each judgment has a middle different and separate from the next. Which means first understanding how to determine each new set of parameters to make it possible to find the new middle, that is all well and good. It’s just that it has nothing to do with what I was saying. The only reason to quote me, was to use me to present one of her new side shows. To highlight her, what do you call it, ah geez I can’t quite think of the word, oh yeah, her Intellect.

By including me in her gibberish she suggested that I needed a lesson in finding or expressing what the middle of the road meant by offering up that lesson. Which by the way included Nazis and Jews. To which I say, after being prodded several times now, what is she nuts? How incentive is she to use as an example the holocaust in lecturing me about a two line statement I made on this silly ass thread.

“All this is why it is better to walk in the middle of the road. Be your own person “. Or about the far right and far left being problematic.

Are you kidding me, Nazis and Jews? Don’t you find this, oh I don’t know, geez I just can’t, oh yeah bellicose and insensitive?

To add to the insult she proceed to present her list of how to become a better person furthering my education. Because of course I would not have learned those most basic of manners in my humble upbringing:

“1) Decide your ethics. What is right? What is wrong? Why? That might take ten years, but will give you your compass.
2) Look around you at the real world, without the filter of desire or fear. That will show you the obstacles”.

The context I used the statement, the middle of the road in was not to be extreme and or inflexible. It is very simple and not deserving of all this attention unless your motives for doing so lie elsewhere.

OK

Er...perhaps it might be more accurate to describe Signy's 'middle of the road' as being subjective, rather than gibberish. She actually makes sense, it's just that you disagree with her premise.

Also I believe Nazis were used as an example, rather than as an insult to you. I made a similar point. To demonstrate how 'middle of the road' can be collusion, if it occurs in a context of extremes.

I'd probably add that 'be your own person' is a weak point. What does it mean exactly? All of us are influenced by our upbringing, our education, the dominant values of the culture we live in. Is it 'being your own person' when you disagree or question the values of where you live? Isn't that what home grown terrorists do? Wasn't Anders Brevik 'being his own person' when he rejected the liberal values of Norway and murdered scores of youngsters who attended a camp for those of left winged political persuasion?

Of COURSE it's subjective - first damn thing about being human is free will, which leads to a viewpoint not necessarily shared by others, but there's still wiggle room on absolutes, cause some principles really do seem universal due to being necessary survival traits - as to which and why, that does seem a matter of some debate.

And as for the inevitable Godwin situation, well... Nazis are the perfect go-to villain, the faction NOBODY likes, at least publicly(1), with so few, if any redeeming qualities that they're a useful example of what-not-to-do.
That's not to say there haven't been worse societies and political factions, just that they're the easiest straw to grasp when you need a bad example - and I'll have more to say on that in a seperate thread.

The multiple studies of the authoritarian personality explain so much about trolls. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show they are hypocrites, but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other?

There is a short & free book summarizing that research. I think you’ll find Bob Altemeyer's The Authoritarians “explains a lot.” Here is a link to the book. http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

A review of The Authoritarians is at

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I have multiple personalities - and under one name! Why use a sockpuppet when you can keep 'em guessing about which one will show up? Eh, but I'm learning that if I'm tired, in pain, out of gas and short-tempered - pissing and cranking doesn't help.

OONJERAH - We are too dumb to live and smart enough to wipe ourselves out.

Quote Magonsdaughter: "... disturbing feeling that it's me and one other poster
with multiple personalities on this site."

I said the same thing in Stephen A Smith thread.

Shouldn't there be a sockpuppets thread to clear the air about this?
Or to create more confusion? 'Cause this thread is for Trolls ... er,
the discussion of them.

... oooOO}{OOooo ...

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small
minds discuss people. ... Tiny minds just bait and troll.

I always thought, Trolling is a fishing term: You bait your line,
probably with multiple hooks, and drag it behind your boat. When
you get a bite or two, you reel in the line and take the fish.

I've been thinking it was just that. Trolls are always baiting others
to get attention.
But last night, I read a couple of definitions. Both emphasized malice
... the Troll wants more than our attention. It wants to hurt us.

Many trolls will argue, ad infinitum, posting the same drivel over &
over & over ...

It is scoring victories by hurting & getting a negative reaction.
Also, I suspect, it is the ultimate judge of who won in the hurting
contest. Scores reported elsewhere that say the troll was trounced
are denied.

The only way to actually defeat a troll is to ignore them. That's
what they can't stand.

OtoH, if you want to tease a Troll, I suspect compliments, admiration
would knock 'em off balance.

(Hmmm. Why does the peer-reviewed scientific paper use the word
psychopath? ... I'd think sociopath more accurate.)

... oooOO}{OOooo ...
I used to search for the meaning of Life.
When I found it, I said, "I want a different meaning!"
