Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

I tried to post this once before but failed. Let's try again (in 2 parts, but not long):

1. I absolutely LOVE this sort of demonstration !!!!!!

2. The Amazing Randi has done this sort of experiment before, years ago. In fact, Derren himself said this sort of trick is as old as the hills.

( you can tell from the film quality, student's clothing, ect... that it was quite some time ago. )

And THIS is a fine example of just why I am of the opinion that such charlatans who claim to be able to do such readings are so damn dangerous. ( same goes for religion , but that's another issue )

These con artists use our own fears and wants against us, tell us what we want to hear, give us false hope and gladly take our money. It's worse than a robber, who flat out just takes, these guys do it to you with a smile, all right in front of you, and you THANK them !!!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

OMG!!! Rappy, I thought you were talking about politicians! And then I realized, you were talking about small-time scammers.

The James Randi One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge (started in 1964,
but only offered $1,000 then) : Prove you're psychic; win the money!

I've been wondering if that's for real. Apparently a lot of people have been
tested, over 1,000? There were 1,000 people who misguidedly believed they
are psychic, but they all failed the test? Were they handpicked? Were they
actors? Are the tests rigged?

I read that some people who've requested an application to be tested simply
never hear back from JREF. Is the old scam debunker himself a scammer?
_______________

Back when, 30-40 years ago, we used to get psychic readings.
Many were done for free. If you paid, it was a small fee, $20-30.
How did the psychic know specific rather than general things
about us?

My sis went for a reading. It sounded pretty accurate, insightful.
At one point, the reader said, "You have 2 children, a girl and a
boy; the girl is older. You love your daughter, but your son can
do no right." It was accurate, personal and specific. If the reader
was a fraud, who told her about my sis's kids? I didn't. This is
an example; the one I recall most clearly. Other readings were
also specific, on target.

Did I or my sis benefit from these readings, which usually included
"healings." Maybe a little. "And then Hanuman said to me something
that cleared up all my confusion!!" Nope ... that never happened.

Later, someone told me that psychic readings can be dangerous. I
thought him foolish. Turns out, he was right.

"The Gift," starring Cate Blanchett as Annie Wilson, a small town
psychic. I like this movie. I think, I hope, that people like Annie
do exist.

Your sister's example is actually pretty vague, and sounds like a straight up cold read.

You'd be surprised how much information you give away without saying anything, and how much a person can glean and lead a conversation to the desired conclusions.

They really, really can be. I'm sorry that you had to find that out, it sounds like you might've learned the hard way.

John Edward - the psychic liar, not the politician - is a great example of how these folks can be dangerous.

Yeah, since the 40s I think. I forget the name of the experiment, even though I read about it recently.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I just find it so frelling amazing that we have both videos ,and that people are sooo surprised at the results.

Snake oil salesmen have been in business for a VERY long time.

Can we PLEASE evolve already ??????

Evolve can be good sometimes. I don't want to evolve into a place that has no magic.
But people keep reassuring me that there is none - real-ly.

An emphasis on science and the provable doesn't remove the magic from anything. In fact, if anything, the sense of wonder and the unknown increases the more we can confirm.

Ah, it's called the Forer experiment. Here's the text Derren used in each of the 'readings':
