Since Chrisisall has mentioned it and it does promise a potentially more interesting discussion than watching sock puppets text-fellate each other (why humor this bullshit, folks?), lets discuss Gung Fu as a real thing - and it is in fact, often a Real World Event, depending very much on who is using it on who, when and how.

Of course, I have to mention here that the original TV Series would never have worked if Kwai Chang Caine hadn't been so absolutely TERRIBLE at it - not the fighting part, but the whole part about defusing things before they get to any point where violence might be necessary... of course, he had to be cause otherwise it'd have been too boring for television, but still it grates to watch him fumble chance after chance to head things off before things get unpleasant, especially since my real job kind of revolves around doing exactly that.

And so - What is Gung Fu ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_fu_%28term%29

>>Kung fu/Kungfu or Gung fu/Gongfu is a Chinese term referring to any study, learning, or practice that requires patience, energy, and time to complete, often used in the West to refer to Chinese martial arts, also known as Wushu. [1] It is only in the late twentieth century, that this term was used in relation to Chinese Martial Arts by the Chinese community. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term "Kung-fu" as "a primarily unarmed Chinese martial art resembling karate." This illustrates how the meaning of this term has been changed in English.<<

Now, in order to keep the discussion manageable, let us restrict it to combat oriented Gungfu practices, or at least those with potential combat applications.

Every version has these things.
PHILOSOPHY - The underlying philosophy of its practice and its essential root.
EXECUTION - How specifically it is used, the Ju of the Jitsu, one could say.
POLICY - Where it ties in with everyday life, and what it is supposed to accomplish.

As example cause it's easy and highly simplifiable,

Pro Wrestling.
PHILOSOPHY: To entertain - tis all about the flash, the showmanship, yes ?
EXECUTION: To be physically credible, and to look impressive and exciting.
POLICY: To make fat stacks of cash, obviously!

Less simple, Shadowvaj Kalima.
PHILOSOPHY: "Keep yer damn hands off me", the philosophical basis that ANY forceful contact with hostile intent is a potentially *lethal* act, one shove, a fall and a bad landing - boom, you're dead, and the opposing party is either unknowing or uncaring of this simple fact, thus transferring the moral responsibility unto the opposing party as without sure knowledge of their intentions one MUST assume the worst, given that they could withdraw at any time.

EXECUTION: Rapid infliction of maximum crippling damage instantly followed by leaving the area as swiftly as possible.
This isn't a fight, or about a fight, grab them, pull them in and BREAK them, and do it in such a fashion as to remove any will/possibility of pursuit and then BE SOMEWHERE ELSE, so that the conflict does not continue or spill over.

POLICY: Stakes-raising, in that the opposing party has to wager what might happen to THEM and reconsider how "worth it" whatever they want to do to you might be, the notion being to make that particular risk assessment into a resounding "nope".

So, what about other types, hrmmm ?
Let's see some other assessments, the devil of the details, eh ?

I tend to avoid mysticism and the spiritual aspects of the regimes.

Shaolin Chuan'Fa - Chinese Temple Boxing. Designed for monks as an exercise system to both keep them active and fit in an otherwise sedentary lifestyle, and as a means of self-discipline. Often taught alongside Tai'Chi, a more moderate, stretching based exercise (I didn't take any of this).

Judo - Primarily geared towards self defense, specifically using the momentum of opponents against them and leverage and throws. Works well with small practicioners with a low center of gravity.

Kung Fu is a fighter who no matter what level he or she rises to will always be bested by a mediocre Grappler.

Oh. Have I misunderstood the purpose of this thread and instead of comparing the martial art forms and their strengths and weaknesses it is meant to be machismo contest about which one is better, that will, presumably, get into arguments about who is stronger and who would beat whom based on impressions made over the internet?

And then Jack or Wulf will show up with a Haw Haw Ah'll beat alla y'all cuz I gotz guns? And then we'll argue about who is better with guns?

In that case, I'll show myself out.

My chosen art is Wing Chun, which assumes a physically stronger opponent. Add in elements of Chinese Fast Wrestling and a touch of What-The-Fu and you basically have my style.

Put me in a UFC ring and know what?
Yeah, I'd probably lose to the weakest fighter. Hey- this is a hobby, not my LIFE.

I'd lose in a sparring match.

I might lose in real life too, as I haven't really had a real drag out fight since highschool, and most of the people around here are kind of hilariously inept at fighting.

Someone with real training or who grew up in one of the more dangerous cities would probably take me apart. I've always been more someone who relied on distractions and surprise attacks and improvised weapons, so I imagine it would depend on if I could get the drop on them. But I figure that's true for anyone.

Bah, y'all are just phoning it in here, lemme throw another log on the pile.

TROLL FU
PHILOSOPHY: To wind up and enrage an internet fora for amusement with a side order of political or social purpose.

EXECUTION: Exploitation of known weaknesses via pretended ignorance and a fullisade of logical fallacies sprinkled liberally with offensive and controversial statement.

POLICY: From a push-positive aspect, essentially prosthelysing, from a push-negative aspect, via adopting the opposite position and ramping it into complete caricature, hoping to cast aspirations on its worthiness and value.

Sorry. I couldn't think of a proper name for some of my moves & applications. That covers stuff like tossing chairs & pocket change, spitting, Kirk-like body slams & whatnot.

What, no hands-clasped, doublefisted overhand strike ?
If yer gonna Kirk, gotta go all the way into the signature move, don't you ?
I actually USED that on a guy once, right after snapping his fibula with a heelstrike, he bent down to grab it and I couldn't resist - serve him for tryin to mug me...

I love those kinda tactics. Using people's reflexive actions to your own advantage is pretty satisfying.

Sometimes you can fake them out that way too.
