I guess 181,000 just doesn't go as far as it used to these days. But then we don't really expect people that hand stuff out all day to shlep it over to the Holiday Inn, do we?

I wonder how many rooms that would have bought for PEOPLE WITHOUT ANYWHERE ELSE TO GO??? Hey we gave them a Walmart bag of food, they'll be FINE...

Be it Haiti or NYC, these folks are great @ finding 5* room & dining.

Meh, I haven't trusted the Red Cross since 1989 and their actions/inactions leading indirectly to the death of someone I cared about.

Any organisation, once it breaches a certain size and complexity, usually larger than monkeysphere/personal influence, inevitably becomes self-serving and over time to the detriment or even direct opposition to its initial goals.
MADD went that route, even their founder now opposes them, and it's also one of the reasons I despise the NRA, the latter being more blatant about another phenomenon...

See, once past that horizon, this crack brained "logic" sets in that they can't spend the money to help people, they need it for bigger fundraisers!... to score more money, to run bigger fundraisers, etc etc et al ad nauseum - essentially getting the money out of you BECOMES the point, the entire point, as their original purpose falls by the wayside.

This is one of the reasons behind my propensity to send durable goods or equipment rather than funds, much harder to misappopriate, and generally done through setup which ensures it ends up directly in the hands of those needing it, with the additional bonus of not leaving such an obvious trail - which given how some folks around here got reamed for donating to charitable causes which became "politically inconvenient", is something to think about as well.

Whenever I hear "Just send money", alarms go off, red flags go up.
That from Governments, Charities, Advocacies or Corporations is nothing I wanna hear, cause money is harder to account for, easily wasted or misused, and unlikely to solve the problem - case in point Military and School budgets, often as not throwing money at the problem in those cases MAKES IT WORSE, cause they just pour it on top of unsolved problems.

Much better to contact LOCAL support orgs, those are generally front-liners and directly involved in trying to solve the problem, and in the rare case where you can personally/physically intervene, and are willing to do so.. that's ALWAYS worth it way out of proportion to whatever you give or do, cause the gift of Hope is infinately powerful - even if your efforts are tiny.
Not long ago I spotted a bum who had no gloves, so I gave him mine, a cheap set of worn gloves with a hole in one knuckle and needing replacement anyway, but to HIM, it meant something - more than just the thing, it was that someone would see him, care about his problems, and act on it in such a fashion, that means EVERYTHING to someone badly down and out.

You take the human element out of it, that's where the problems begin.

Hello,

I agree. Most organisms become concerned with survival, growth, and reproduction before all other concerns. This includes organisms comprised of people, known as organizations.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

That's so disgusting I don't even want to THINK about it! I hope it gets lots and lots of publicity and the Red Cross is not only embarrassed as hell, but gets held accountable!!

Beyond that, I can't go on, or I'd begin writing things even FFF would find offensive (tho', given the past, that's hard to imagine...).

Essentially I'll leave it at and

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

So increases my cynicism when ever there's a great outcry for $ to help " the children " after disasters.

I translate that into meaning that these groups will send a few folks over, pass around some token care packages, and then go sip drinks by the pool, back at the resort hotel, and wait for dinner to be served at the 5 star restaurant.
