U.S. Census Bureau Finds 1.6% of Adults Identify as Gay

For the first time in 57 years the U.S. Census Bureau has surveyed adults on their sexual orientation, and the results published Tuesday show that 1.6% of adults aged 18 or over identified as gay, while another 0.7% identified as bisexual.

The figures, released by the Center for Disease Control, were slightly lower than the findings from previous surveys, which had estimated that the LGBT population comprised 3.4 to 4% of the population.

I don't hate them for this, I hate them for the vaccine scare bullshit every fall. New strain of flu is the end days blah blah blah. I hate that anti-vaccine and pro-vaccine people are being a bunch of dunces instead using the debate as a platform for discussing useful concerns and possible improvements or new research.

For the longest time, I simply opted out of getting the flu shot. Did it one time, years ago, when my immune system was down a bit, and got sick. Duh.

Then did it last year, and it was no big deal. Felt a bit 'meh' for a few hours, later on that night, but that soon passed. For the first time in at least 3 years, I didn't catch the gorram flu. T'was awesome.

But as far as this new stat, on the # of gays, it would seem some are none too pleased. Makes them look marginalized, or some such. I tend to agree that much ado about only a few, but no one listens to me.

Now the CDC says otherwise.

Not really sure that small percentages of a population has anything to do with determining what rights that percentage gets.

It's like saying Native Americans are only 0.9% of the US population, so why should they be allowed to get married.

The problem with the flu is that when people get it they don’t always stay home for a week. It may be who you give it to dies. I get the shots because when I get the flu it destroys me.

“In the United States during the three decades prior to 2007. CDC estimates that from the 1976-1977 season to the 2006-2007 flu season, flu-associated deaths ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.”
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-related_deaths.htm

As for the gay population being as low as it is I have always believed their numbers to be extremely low. I remember the hype that they numbered as many as 6 to 10 percent. I believe that was to scare politicians into believing gays could affect elections more than they could.

True. My cousins and their kids can attest to that. Don't visit your grandmother when you're that sick, people.

I don't get the flu, but if I ever get a nasty one, I intend to die pathetically at home.

This goes to what bytemite was saying in another post about you not recognizing the substance of your posts( physical material from which something is made or which has discrete existence). It also goes to what I implied about attacking others. The reason some might see hate in this thread is because of your strong political associations.

What are the major issues of conservatives? The get out the vote issues. Abortion and gay marriage. The fact that you choose to post a thread concerning gays could be construed as an indirect way of suggesting so few are dictating to so many. We just witnessed an abortion thread. It just doesn’t pass the smell test to some.

I didn't know that. I don't care but I did not know that. I always thought it strange how easily Jewel flirted with him in public when she was married. Now I know. His partners name is Paul. I looked it up. Wikipedia if you can trust that. He also has two adopted children.

It was actually kinda funny, because when he first came out was only a couple years ago, and he admitted that doing the filming of Firefly he was very worried about how he might be perceived and tried to keep it secret.

Pretty much no one in the cast was all that surprised. Some of us fans weren't either. :)

lol yep.

He seems happier now that he's out in the open. It's kinda nice. He always seemed extra shy before and now we know why.

It's a little sad really that he was so afraid of us fans and his friends. But having known some other gay guys who have told me about how scary it is to come out, I can see why.

Despite that I still find it funny that so many people already knew or guessed. It's a story with a good ending, all in all, people were pretty cool about it and he probably felt a little better about the world.

@ Byte - I knew about Sean before he and Jewel appeared on WareHouse 13. It was around that time that he had 'officially' come out, so to say, though it wasn't exactly a shocker.

@ THGRRI -

Actually, lower taxes, fiscal responsibility , border security ... but what ever.

The fact that I chose to post a thread which the CDC stated its findings is what really has some folks bent out of shape. The CDC aren't exactly the Family Research Council, now are they ? Fact is, you're trying to intimidate ANYONE from posting on topics which, in YOUR view, they ought not post in the first place.

Problem w/ you is, that you start with a false premise, and then build upon that as your ground zero. Anything perceieved as not favorable to causes you think are important, get branded as " anti " something. I posted a CDC report. Got a problem w/ their findings ? By all means, debunk away. But don't accuse ME of ill intent because of your false prejudices of me and my views.

As well, his lack of intellectual honesty is shown when he can't even identify the major issues of conservatives, which might be why he cannot understand reasonable people or discussions.

Uhh... What? You're the one who brought up marginalization.

Quote:

Makes them look marginalized, or some such. I tend to agree that much ado about only a few, but no one listens to me.

Marginalize: "to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position within a society or group."

Quote:

Social exclusion (or marginalization) is social disadvantage and relegation to the fringe of society.

Social exclusion is the process in which individuals or entire communities of people are systematically blocked from rights, opportunities and resources (e.g. housing, employment, healthcare, civic engagement, democratic participation and due process) that are normally available to members of society and which are key to social integration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_exclusion

In other words, marginalization means basically to treat someone like a second class citizen, meaning they don't get the same privileges or rights as another person due to their identity or group.

The big gay rights thing, what they're being marginalized about, is gay marriage.

So you brought up gay marriage by snarking about them feeling marginalized, indicating you don't feel they're marginalized, and then you said that it's "much ado about only a few" suggesting that their numbers are a valid justification for their marginalization.

And then when I argue the point, you say that it's an unrelated issue?

Maybe you're just trying to avoid getting into an argument about gay marriage, and I can respect that, but don't tell me I'm being irrelevant. We all know that gay marriage factors into this conversation. It's the elephant in the room.

You don't even know what a NeoCon is, and yet you falsely accuse me of being one. Clever.

It's true, I am not fond of some Muslims. At least, those who saw heads off innocents and stone women to death for daring to show bare ankle to anyone outside of the family.

ILLEGAL immigrants. Get that one right, at least. Come in through the front door, sign the entry book and I'm cool w/ ya!

When perceptions are wrong they are wrong. I merely pointed out the perceptions of you that appear be held by others. After that it comes down to my perceptions of you which are based on your posts and the thread topics you generate.

As for me being afraid of new things I would say not so. I think that label fits you better due to your conservative nature.

Here is the definition of conservative:

"disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change."

What this shows is a complete lack of understanding of what you yourself are about.
