For best, and considering influence in the role, I think Jackie nudges out Nancy.

Jackie was revered around the world. When the Kennedys traveled she was the one most admired. Or I should say made the biggest splash. Not to spite Nancy but in that sense not even close.

As far as looks, it's safe to say that Jackie was and remains the hottest 1st Lady to date.

Elanor Roosevelt easily edges out Barbara Bush, who looked like 41's mom, even back in '88.

Until recently I don't recall hate being directed at a first lady. Bush two caught a lot of shit but his wife had high grades regardless. It's getting stupid.

I am betting you mean shrewd. The one I know best fits that description is Nancy Reagan although I am not sure that's fair. She had her husbands back more than anyone I've heard of, and many behind the scene guilty or not felt her wrath. Even her own kids had big problems with her and Ronald. They actually didn't like them much at all.

Here in this country they pick something that is dear to them and try and effect change. They are front and center in representing our country and do a very good job of it.

Perhaps the most important thing is bring down the hate level of people who disagree with there spouses politics. For instance when Bush two was giving fits to those who disagreed with him Mrs. Bush had a very high rating. She presented a sanity within the family that gave heart to the country. I don't know if you get what I am saying but it was really important at the time.

With Mrs. Obama it is quite the different story. She is under fire constantly and is not deserving of it. Some of the things said about her are terribly hateful. I have seen it in these threads. Their called bigots. This for me is a first. I don't ever recall this being the case before. Except with Hillary Clinton because she tried to fix the health care system while first lady. Boy did she get it. Then she ran for and became a Senator in New York and earned even the Republicans respect.

Might seem like that. We were founded during a time of much monarchism worldwide. To effectively engage, collude, partner with these our government did quite a bit of this Elegance for the sake of Diplomacy, it seems. Our buildings for Congress and the White House were specifically designed for the appearance of power and history - although our land obviously had less history than any other landmass on Earth.
First Ladies do, IIRC, perform some duties regarding ceremonial and State Dinners in their Home, which is also their office.

Nancy Reagan did have quite a bit of influence over her husband. Some think this was a bad thing, others think it helped moderate some issues. Sometimes he did not adhere to her wishes.
Jackie may be known as a fashion and hairstyle maverick - you may be better suited to tell us how she is viewed on the world stage. I was more referring to her work in the White House, and her support of one of our greatest Presidents. She had great influence in updating the look and splendor of the White House - may be called remodelling, but many conjured it was overdue. Her spirit was also viewed, I think, as an indication of the renewed vigor and youthfulness of an administration which had only one other new President following WWII. She had also been a professional photographer, or maybe it was photo-journalist. I would not consider her a light-weight, if that's what you were thinking.

On the other hand, Mooch-elle and the Shrew Co-President are horrific examples, where they have vastly overstepped their bounds, duties, and done so without any merit whatsoever.

Does the world media even know or mention First Ladies of America? I hardly hear of Angela Merkel's husband, but I have not heard he would have any duties in her administration.
