Reminds me of Miranda, in how run down everything has become, only after 10 years.

Speaks poorly for a nation which gave us the Olympics that it shows so little pride in their own works.

The diving pool I can sorta understand. I mean really, who the hell DIVES ? Justlook at that diving well . It has exactly 1 use, and that's to facilitate big time diving meets. Nothing else!

Atlanta's Olympic pool now belongs to GA Tech, and gets used by students, faculty and the swim team. It's open 7 days a week, when there's no swim meet taking place.

Now, the village pool, that's a true heart breaker. Not even the decency to keep it drained and free of garbage! Pigs.

Geez, what's with the hatred? The country's basically bankrupt 30% unemployment and you expect them to focus on something like the Olympic Village.

This is one of the stupidities of the Olympics, that host countries have to pour so many resources into something that's over in a few days.

Ludicrous.

Oh, I dunno. Could be the putting on of a ginormous athletic event that they couldn't pay for in the first place, and it only added to their financial woes.

OR it could be allowing the expensive structures to fall into ruin, merely 10 years after their stated purpose. It's a disgrace and speaks to their societal values, imo.

What wasn't used in Atlanta was taken down and made into useful space, and what remains is still being used, 18 years later.

Going back to at least 1980, Olympics held in the USA either endured minimal loss or were profitable. In other nations, it's a financial disaster. ( Montreal, Athens, even Sydney )

Hell, Beijing made money ( officially ) off the Olympics, and their facilities STILL look like crap!

Just sayin'.

I'm kind of with Auraptor. Though minus the vitriol. I wouldn't call them names over it. (Because I really don't care too much.)

This stuff was built with little consideration for future use, and while the financial crisis was looming on the horizon it was not the reason they had no plan in place for how to care for these structures after the Games.

Some articles specifically mention the good things that were built alongside the sporting venues and provide long-term improvement in Athens: airport, subways, etc. Not all of it was a waste. But there were clearly some missed opportunities with the sporting venues.

I do wonder if the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, Brazil, will look like this in a few years, or whether they'll find enough alternate use to justify maintenance costs.

Don't think of it as hate or vitriol, but passion @ such mindless waste of the peoples's money.

How that doesn't animate people a bit escapes me.

See, Atlanta had a PLAN to use many large facilities after the Olympics. Dorms would be taken over by Ga State University and GA Tech. The old Fulton County Stadium was leveled, and the new Olympic Stadium was retro-fitted to accommodate the ATL Braves. The pool has stayed in heavy use. Even the equestrian facilities are still in use.

So yeah, every bit of blame is rightly directed at those cities who can't carry on w/ the maintenance of their high profile arenas. They KNEW, long before getting the Olympics, that there was a cost AFTER the party was over. And Athens had even more of a heads up, as they had hoped to get the Games for 1996 ! Pitiful planning.
