For thems of you unfamiliar with the reference, it's from the infamous Rains Law.

Quote:

Jacob Riis wrote in 1902 of saloon keepers who mocked the law by setting out "brick sandwiches," two pieces of bread with a brick in between, thus fulfilling the legal requirement of serving food.

As with certain other things in the world, often when holier-than-thou politicians can't get their way cause the public doesn't support their idiotic puritan whims, they either abuse the tax code or impose onerous restrictions to spit in the face of the public they serve to do it anyway.
Most "blue laws" and other related acts springing from that poisonous root also have this kind of flavor.

Fast forward to today, and the idiocy of this bullshit in Indiana, and one business owners response.

I prefer the Wine Brick.
During prohibition, Wine Bricks could be sold in hardware stores and the like - pretty much anywhere.
They were wrapped in cellophane or the equivalent of plastic for that era. On the label was a clear warning which went something like this: Absolutely DO NOT soak this brick in 1.2 gallons of distilled water for 5 hours or else it will become illegal contraband in violation of the Prohibition against Alcohol.
