Perhaps my point was missed.

If digging a trench does in fact have no effect on the lava flow, then what is the reason for having government troops fill it back in? If they need to fill in the trench, does this not indicate that it may do some good? If it will not do any good, there is no need to have the government direct that they invade or trespass his land to fill in the trench. In the face of a moving lava flowing towards a town, does the government have nothing better to do?

Even if it's just 1 guy w/ a shovel, the mere INTENT may be enough for the govt to act. It doesn't take much.

I have no idea what he's using, how big a trench he dug, the lay of the land , etc...

It may all be a moot point, in a few weeks, months anyway. Both his and the govt's efforts may go up in smoke.
