Taliban go on killing spree at Pakistan school, 132 students dead

By Jibran Ahmad and Mehreen Zahra-Malik

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - At least 132 students and nine staff members were killed on Tuesday when Taliban gunmen broke into a school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar and opened fire, witnesses said, in the bloodiest massacre the country has seen for years.

More than eight hours after militants slipped into the heavily guarded compound through a back entrance, the army declared the operation to flush them out over, and said that all nine insurgents had been killed.

The attack on a military-run high school attended by more than 1,100 people, many of them children of army personnel, struck at the heart of Pakistan's military establishment, an assault certain to enrage the country's powerful army.

Wounded children taken to nearby hospitals told Reuters most victims died when gunmen, suicide vests strapped to their bodies, entered the compound and opened fire indiscriminately on boys, girls and their teachers.

"One of my teachers was crying, she was shot in the hand and she was crying in pain," said Shahrukh Khan, 15, who was shot in both legs but survived by hiding under a bench.

"One terrorist then walked up to her and started shooting her until she stopped making any sound. All around me my friends were lying injured and dead."

The Taliban, waging war against Pakistan in order to topple the government and set up an Islamic state, immediately claimed responsibility.

"We selected the army's school for the attack because the government is targeting our families and females," said Taliban spokesman Muhammad Umar Khorasani. "We want them to feel the pain."

SUICIDE BOMBERS

As night fell on Peshawar, a teeming, volatile city near the Afghan border, security forces wrapped up an operation that lasted more than eight hours and involved intense gun battles. The military said about 960 pupils and staff were evacuated.

The Taliban said the gunmen had been equipped with suicide vests and at least three explosions were heard inside the high school at the height of the massacre.

Outside, as helicopters rumbled overhead, police struggled to hold back distraught parents who were trying to break past a security cordon and get into the school.

Officials said 121 pupils and three staff members were wounded. A local hospital said the dead and injured were aged from 10 to 20 years old.

A Reuters correspondent visiting the city's major Combined Military Hospital said its corridors were lined with dead students, their green-and-yellow school uniform ties peeping out of the white body bags.

The gunmen, who several students said communicated with each other in a foreign language, possibly Arabic, managed to slip past the school's tight security because at least some of them were wearing Pakistani military uniforms, some witnesses said.

Pakistanis, used to almost daily militant attacks, were shocked by the scale of the massacre and the loss of so many young lives. It recalled the 2004 siege of a school in Russia's Beslan by Chechen militants which ended in the death of more than 330 people, half of them children.

The United States, Pakistan's ally in its fight against Islamist militants operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan, swiftly condemned the attack.

"This act of terror angers and shakes all people of conscience ... the perpetrators must be brought to justice," said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

SPIRAL OF VIOLENCE

The Pakistani Taliban have vowed to step up attacks in response to a major army operation against the insurgents in the tribal areas.

But despite the crackdown this year, the military has long been accused of being too lenient toward Islamist militants who critics say are used to carry out the army's bidding in places like Kashmir and Afghanistan.

The military denies the accusations.

So far the Taliban have targeted mainly security forces, military bases and airports, but attacks on civilian targets with no logistical significance are relatively rare.

In September, 2013, however, dozens of people, including many children, were killed in an attack on a church, also in Peshawar in Pakistan's northwest.

The assault on a school where officers' children studied could push the armed forces into a more drastic response.

Very interesting.
So interesting that Magonsdaughter started her own thread for it, so she can talk in her own thread, and post in her own thread. Only a day after your post.

Apparently the Pakistani also have workplace violence. Need to stop going to school there. Or maybe just stop supporting Taliban/ISIS/etc.
Heard that even Iraq Taliban said these guys went too far.

Prominent Democrat: The only people who ‘underestimated’ ISIS were in the White House

“I think, our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria.”

That was President Barack Obama’s response to CBS reporter Steve Kroft who asked the president if he was surprised by the rapid rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria – a group which he had previously dismissed as al-Qaeda’s “jayvee” team.

As Ed Morrissey observed, it took only hours for The Daily Beast’s Eli Lake to find well-connected sources willing to denounce the president’s dishonest buck passing. Using some rather coarse language, one frustrated former Pentagon official accused the president of either being mendacious or ignoring his intelligence briefings. Morrissey observed that even New York Times reporters found the president’s testimony in his own defense wanting.

Now, even some Democrats are jumping ship. Former Rear Admiral Joe Sestak, a two-term Democratic member of the House of Representatives, a House Armed Services Committee member, and candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010, was asked on Monday how it was possible for the intelligence community so gravely underestimate ISIS. Sestak appeared to surprise his MSNBC interlocutor when he noted that the only people who got ISIS wrong work in the Obama administration.

Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama "strongly" condemned the terror attack in Paris on Tuesday that claimed 12 lives and praised France for standing "shoulder to shoulder" in the fight against terrorism.

Obama said in a statement that the U.S. would provide "any assistance" to "America's oldest ally" in bringing the terrorists to justice. Obama was briefed on the attack against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo Tuesday morning and senior U.S. national security officials have been in touch with their French counterparts. Three gunmen burst into the magazine's headquarters on Tuesday morning and also fired at police officers in the streets outside while shouting "Allahu Akbar" -- God is Great in Arabic.

Piece of go-se Obama blames victims, not attackers.

White House Questioned French Magazine’s ‘Judgment’ In 2012 For Publishing Naked Muhammad Cartoon

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — The White House criticized French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2012 for publishing cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

Then White House Press Secretary Jay Carney questioned the magazine’s judgment after publishing images of Muhammad naked.

“We are aware that a French magazine published cartoons featuring a figure resembling the Prophet Muhammad, and obviously we have questions about the judgment of publishing something like this,” Carney told reporters in September 2012.

Carney stated that the images would be “deeply offensive to many and have the potential to be inflammatory.”

“We don’t question the right of something like this to be published, we just question the judgment behind the decision to publish it,” Carney said at the time.

Three gunmen killed 12 people in the attack on the magazine’s Paris headquarters Wednesday. The gunmen can be heard yelling the Arabic phrase “Allahu Akbar” in video of the attack.
French President Francois Hollande called it a “terrorist attack.”
President Barack Obama strongly condemned the attacks in a statement released by the White House.

“I strongly condemn the horrific shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that has reportedly killed 12 people,” Obama said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrorist attack and the people of France at this difficult time.”

Obama added that he has directed his administration to provide any assistance needed to French authorities.

The gunmen still remain on the loose.

You'd almost think that the French are tired of walking on egg shells with not trying to insult Muslim immigrants. Muslim immigrants who hold no allegiance to the NATION of France, or the traditions of the French people.

It's like this all through out Europe too. Open borders and a PC / " multi-culturalism " mindset which has lead to large populations of Muslims , many out of work males, who are prime for radicalization.

Kano, Nigeria (CNN)Boko Haram militants opened fire on northern Nigerian villages, leaving bodies scattered everywhere and as many as 2,000 people feared dead, officials said.

"The attack on Baga and surrounding towns looks as if it could be Boko Haram's deadliest act," Amnesty International said in a statement.

Islamist militants sprayed bullets as they stormed in last weekend in trucks and armored vehicles, local authorities said Friday.

When they arrived, they unloaded motorcycles and pursued residents who fled into the bush, firing indiscriminately, said Baba Abba Hassan, a local district head.

Local officials reported death tolls ranging from hundreds to as many as 2,000 people.

Unreal Islam

As with most organized religions, the foundational texts and beliefs of Islam can support both peaceful versions and violent ones. Until people recognize and admit that all of these are, in fact, “real Islam”, the issues underlying the problem of jihadi militancy cannot be addressed. If the violence is “not real Islam”, the implication is that Islam – as practiced by most Muslims – needs no reform. But that is manifestly not the case. The scourge of violence in the name of Islam will be removed only when Muslims in general come to reject all instances of violence in the name of Islam, including those that are celebrated in scripture and history. When conquerors who killed “infidels” are regarded as heroes of the faith; when the world is seen as divided into the “house of Islam” and the “house of war”; when dying for God is considered better than living for the sake of fellow humans; when non-Muslims are regarded as morally inferior; when many standard prayers end by asking God for “victory against the infidels”; and when apostasy and blasphemy are regarded as capital crimes – how can jihadi violence be seen as anything but the logical conclusion of such ideas and practices? And yet, these are all part of “mainstream” Islam – some of them derived directly from holy texts. What the extremists are doing is merely taking these ideas more literally and acting on them. The main thing separating most ordinary believing Muslims from the extremists is not so much the narrowness of belief – which they both share – but the willingness to match that belief with action. Small wonder, then, that the militants see non-violent Muslims as hypocrites, which in many ways is worse than being an infidel. -- http://brownpundits.blogspot.com/2015/01/unreal-islam.html

Actually, yes. They have. But what the hell else is new ? Be it Jimmy Carter blaming Israel or the MSM blaming it on the photos of abu ghraib, which it posted, non stop, week after week, on so many front pages of their papers.

But I find this a bit interesting. Remember when I said the Left IGNORES Necro-Muslim violence ?

That's exactly what Obama and his admin did, by not showing up in Paris. Didn't want to be bothered w/ a narrative that singled out ISLAM in any way connected to the terrorism which we see, all over the globe.

Brussels (AFP) - Belgian police launched a "jihadist-related" anti-terrorism operation in the eastern town of Verviers on Thursday, with reports saying three people had been killed.

Public broadcaster RTBF reported three deaths and said explosions were heard at the scene, but there was no immediate confirmation.

The incident comes as Europe is on high alert after 17 people were killed in the Islamist attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket in Paris last week.

"An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP without giving further details.

Another official said separately that the incident in Verviers, which is close to the German border some 125 kilometres (70 miles) from Brussels, was "jihadist-related".

In May 2014, four people were shot dead in a suspected Islamist attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels. Frenchman Mehdi Nemmouche, who had previously been in Syria, has been charged with murder.

The men targeted in Verviers were under surveillance having returning from Syria a week ago, Belgian media reported.

Intelligence indicated they were planning an attack, the reports said.

Prosecutors were due to give a press conference at 1900 GMT.

Hey everybody ! Look at what Iran has!!!

Iran has built a 27-meter-long missile, capable of delivering a warhead “far beyond Europe,” and placed it on a launch pad at a site close to Tehran, an Israeli television report said Wednesday, showing what it said were the first satellite images of the missile ever seen in the West.

It stressed that the missile could be used to launch spacecraft or satellites, but also to carry warheads.

The Channel 2 news report showed satellite imagery documenting what it said was Iran’s “very rapid progress” on long-range missile manufacture.

It showed one photograph of a site near Tehran, which it said the West had known about for two years, where Iran was working on engines for its long-range missiles.

It then showed a satellite photograph of a second site, nearby, which featured a launch pad, with the 27-meter missile on it — an Iranian missile “never seen before” by the West.

It seems like something one would be hard pressed to disagree with: the word “coexist,” written on a wall using a Muslim crescent as the letter “C,” a Star of David as the letter “X,” and a Christian cross as a “T.”

But in Paris, this particular iteration of the popular inscription—here, created by the street artist Combo, who also pasted a life-size photo of himself next to it—didn’t go down well with everybody. Le Monde reports that four young people asked the artist to remove it last weekend, and beat him up severely when he refused to do so.

Combo ended up with a dislocated shoulder and many bruises.

The attack is characteristic of the inter-religious tensions that plague France and have been exacerbated by the Charlie Hebdo tragedy (see 12 Killed at Magazine Previously Attacked for Satirical Cartoons). Combo declined to discuss the identity of his assailants. “It would only add fuel to the fire,” he told the French newspaper.

A former adman, the artist has taken his politically-charged street art to Los Angeles and Hong Kong, where he pasted printouts of web pages forbidden by the Chinese government. “My pieces function in a disruptive manner, they surprise, and appear up where they shouldn’t be,” he said.

During a residency in Bayreuth, he grew his beard and started wearing the traditional Muslim dress—not because he was increasingly attracted to a more fundamentalist version of Islam, but, again, to disrupt established codes. To his friends asking him whether he was “going to jihad” in Lebanon, he answered, “I’m going to ji-art.”

Copenhagen police were frantically searching Saturday for two gunmen with automatic weapons who opened fire on a cafe hosting a free speech event organized by a controversial Swedish artist who has faced threats for his caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Police said the two suspects drove away in a dark Volkswagen Polo after they sprayed the Krudttoenden cafe with some 30 bullets, killing a 40-year-old man. The shooting also slightly injured three police officers. The artist, Lars Vilks was not hurt, the Danish news network, thelocal.dk, said, citing media reports.

The TV2 channel reported later that police found the the car nearby. The car had been abandoned and there was no sign of the suspects.

DHAKA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Machete-wielding assailants hacked to death an American critic of religious extremism in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, in the latest of a series of attacks on writers who support freethinking values in the Muslim-majority nation.

Avijit Roy, a U.S. citizen of Bangladeshi origin, and his wife and fellow blogger, Rafida Ahmed, were attacked on Thursday while returning from a book fair. Ahmed was seriously injured.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki called it "a shocking act of violence" that was "horrific in its brutality and cowardice."

Psaki told a regular news briefing she had no information as the motive for the attack, but said the United States was ready to assist the investigation.

The attack comes amidst a crackdown on hardline Islamist groups, which have increased activities in recent years in the South Asian nation.

Police retrieved two machetes from the site, but have not yet identified any suspects. They said they were investigating the involvement of Ansarullah Bangla Team, an Islamist extremist group based in Bangladesh that claimed responsibility on Friday for the murder.

Roy's family said Islamist radicals had been threatening him in recent weeks because he maintained a blog, "Mukto-mona," or "Freemind," that highlighted humanist and rationalist ideas and condemned religious extremism.

"Islamist radicals are behind my son's murder," Ajay Roy told reporters on Friday after filing a murder case with police.

His mother had to FILE a murder case with police? Probably won't be enough non-female witnesses to proceed with investigation.

" Radicals" kill in Bangladesh, Amsterdam, France... for the unholy crime of non belief and freedom of thought.

But such things are just a problem in "Muslim" countries.

NYC women wanted to be jihadi fighters, not ISIS wives

NEW YORK — Two women accused in New York City's latest homegrown terrorism case may be part of what investigators and experts say is an evolving threat — a greater willingness by women to shed blood in the name of militant Islamic jihad.

The pair allegedly wanted to "make history" on their own by building a bomb and attacking a domestic target. Just a day after the New York pair was arrested, a Philadelphia woman was accused of expressing her willingness to die as a martyr for the Islamic State group.

While past cases involved women answering the call by the Islamic State group on social media to join the cause as nurses or wives, "the idea that they want to fight is more a noticeable new trend," said Karen Greenberg, director of Fordham Law School's Center on National Security.

First of all, let's hope this isn't true.

But I posted about that here just to demonstrate that there are a lot of "beliefs" that will cause people to commit atrocities. Sometimes that belief is in a particular god (ie it's a religion) but sometimes that belief is in the superiority or purity of a group of people. Sometimes that belief is in intangibles like "freedom" (a god-given "inalienable" right which is yet somehow taken away from people) and sometimes the belief is in money or the power of greed.

Beliefs make people do strange things.

I read that article and posted it here with a shock of recognition - that it was very much like that Jordanian pilot burned alive- and you think it's just a "stunt"?

It just goes to show that we live in entirely different mental landscapes. What I got out of seeing the article and connecting it to this thread is that beliefs drive a LOT of brutality across the world, and it doesn't really make much difference what the belief is if it ends in the same result. Does it matter if some people believe they are purer than others and starve them, gas them, burn them, or work them to death? Or that their god is better than somebody else's god, so they cut the infidels' throats or hack them to death with machetes? Or spread disease among them? Does it matter WHAT the belief is, if it leads to the same end?

Yes, Islam is a frightening religion. I've read enough of the Q'uran to know that -more than modern Christianity - it advocates violent conversion of the infidel, and even worse treatment of the apostate. (Modern Xtianity at least has the leavening of the New Testament to make it less horrific.) But Islam isn't the ONLY belief structure which leads to horror. Some people point to Hitler, some people point to Mao, and some people point to Stalin as being just as horrible, and there are even more examples today and throughout history. I just don't see Islam as The Only source of extremism. It's on the shelf with a bunch of others.

al Qaeda, Boko Haram, the Taliban, ISIS, the govts of Iran, Saudia Arabia, from the middle east, n. africa and through out Europe and S.E Asia, more violence in committed by so called followers of Allah than all other religions combined, and it's not even close.

For you to try to diminish these facts w/the attempted " yeah, but... " and then interject some random, rare and completely unrelated matter where you show other forms of deplorable violent acts , only shows you have your head in a pillow case.

Yeah, humans have been inhuman and cruel to each other and everything else on this planet for 1000's of years. But that's not the issue of TODAY.

TODAY, the most pressing twisted group of violent zealots pray on a rug, 5 times a day. When they're not raping and sawing heads off infidels, that is.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Signy

It was just a few short years ago this used to happen in the US because some folks thought god had ordained whites to be superior, and blacks were subhuman.

Notice how proudly the whites pose with their victims.

And lynching wasn't restricted to men

or adults.

Sometimes there was a sale on lynching.

And victims weren't only hung. Some were burned alive.

Sometimes homes were set on fire and whole families burned! I bet THAT was exciting!

Some got a two-fer: they were burned, THEN hung!

Notice the guy on the lower right. He's doing his best smiling for the camera.

An uncounted number were merely beaten to death.

And yet, some say the Christian god is a peaceful god.

The last officially recorded lynching in the United States occurred in 1968. However, many consider the 1998 death of James Byrd in Jasper, Texas, at the hands of three whites who hauled him behind their pick-up truck with a chain, a later instance.

The Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, introduced by Representative Leonidas C. Dyer, a Republican from Saint Louis, Missouri, in the US House of Representatives in 1918, was directed at punishing lynchings and mob violence.

It has yet to be passed.
