(Reuters) - President Barack Obama assured Americans on Saturday that a newly negotiated framework for a nuclear pact with Iran was a "good deal" as he sought public support for a diplomatic breakthrough that many in Congress oppose.

A day after placing calls to top U.S. lawmakers to urge support for the agreement, Obama pressed his case that the deal would ensure Washington's longtime foe would not be able to build a nuclear weapon.

"It’s a good deal, a deal that meets our core objectives, including strict limitations on Iran’s program and cutting off every pathway that Iran could take to develop a nuclear weapon," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, broadcast on Saturday.

"This deal denies Iran the plutonium necessary to build a bomb. It shuts down Iran’s path to a bomb using enriched uranium," he said.

The White House hopes support from the U.S. public for its negotiating efforts will help sway skeptical lawmakers. The president and administration officials will be engaged in a difficult sales pitch in the coming weeks and months.

Obama completed calls to John Boehner, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Republican Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, by Friday afternoon, the White House said.

In his address, the president noted that the deal would commit Iran to inspections and transparency for many years.

"This is a long-term deal, with strict limits on Iran’s program for more than a decade and unprecedented transparency measures that will last for 20 years or more," he said.

The framework, which was agreed on Thursday after eight days of talks between Iran and six world powers in Switzerland, clears the way for a final agreement to allay Western fears that Iran could build an atomic bomb. It would include lifting economic sanctions on Tehran in return.

Negotiators will seek to seal a final deal by the end of June. Obama noted that it could still come apart.

"Success is not guaranteed," he said. "But today we have an historic opportunity to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in Iran, and to do so peacefully, with the international community firmly behind us."

Meanwhile Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu is railing that a deal with Iran will be the death of Israel.

Bibi is being a responsible leader of his country in calling out the dangers of a nuclear Iran.

Why the push, I have to wonder, by Obama and the Left in general, to see a oil rich nation like Iran develop nuclear energy ? The Left have been trying to rid the world of nuke power and weapons for decades, but now that a hard line Muslim nation, which mistreats women and gays as bad as any govt. And all while the leader of Iran joins in a literal chorus of shouting " Death to America " , even as negotiations continued.

Anyone care to field that one ?

I have to wonder the same thing. But I think Obama is correct that this deal will actually make is LESS likely that Iran will develop a nuclear weapon, so I don't think "nuclear weapons" are Netanyahu's real concern - that smacks to me of a propaganda point, kind of like Saddam Hussein's 20+year-old "WMD" which, in their degraded state, weren't a threat to anyone. I'll tell you later what I read from one of my very intelligent email list-mates about it, but it's a long story and I've got to get going.

"nuclear weapons" in the hands of a state like Iran , which has made clear its intent to wipe Israel off the map , are Netanyahu's real concern.

How can that not be blatantly evident ?

Because it isn't. Based on my immediate recent experience with you in the other thread, I leave it to you to show that it's "obvious" (ie that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon under the strictures of this agreement), but I really don't expect to get any reality-based responses from you on this either.

Right now, I'm looking for comments from OTHER people.

The push is due to the threat of Europe pulling out and lifting it's share of the sanctions. They want to start doing business with Iran. If that happens it would be no different that Cuba. America has sanctions in place and the rest of the world does business with them. They believe positive contact with Iran would work to pull them back into the realm of reason. That and economically they need to. If you were paying attention to what was going on instead of just voicing fox opinions, you would know that.

Listen to the experts for a bit not the nay Sayers. At least we will be able to control what Iran does. If they do cheat the rest of the world will have to push back. Without this the rest of the world walks. How does that help Israel?

This does answer your question. It states that the rest of the world will leave the table and Israel and the United States will be on our own. If that happens Iran see's a lot of the sanctions lifted and we loose all leverage.

Try thinking for a change and let the ideology go.

Oh my god. Because that means the sanctions go away. Without the sanctions their is no reason not to build the bomb. Israel can not take them on alone without major, major trauma to themselves. And the last thing America needs is another war in the middle east.

The deal, despite what Obama says, does not deny Iran the bomb.

Obama has absolutely no problem lying to ...well, anyone. It's not opinion, it's FACT.

" If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it. Period "

So, when even FRANCE says this is a bad deal, and that the USA caved, I have to ask you again,... why would Israel object , unless it feels that Iran will get the bomb, no matter what ?

The false narrative that Obama and seemingly you want to give us is that either a bad deal is taken, and all is right w/ the world, or no deal is made, and we go to war.

Iran is motivated to make a deal which gets sanctions lifted. Israel wants no nukes, and yet that's exactly what the world has given them.

Iranians, meet the Iranians.
They're the modern stone-age Muslim country.
From the town of Tehran,
They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the mullahs down the street.
And watch gays and women getting beat.

When you're with the Iranians
Have an allah akbar doo time.
A dabba doo time.
We'll have a gay old time.

Iranians, meet the Iranians.
They're the modern Nazi wannabees.
Hanging gays, whipping young girls, and torturing infidels,
They're a page right out of history.

Someday, maybe the Ayatollah will win the fight.
Then Israel will disappear into the night.

When you're with the Iranians
Have an allah akbar doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a gay old time.

A "deal."
Not written on paper, all have agreed.
Not signed by anybody, all have agreed.
Iran says that what Obama announced is not what they had agreed to.
This proclamation ensures that sanctions against Iran are suspended for even more time (the whole point of Iran attending these pointless non-negotiations) until June so they can peddle their wares and generate more funds to further support terrorism and Jew-killing.
Iran still will be allowed to have vastly more centrifuges during this respite compared to the few they had at the beginning of these "talks" which suspended the sanctions so they could stockpile and start-up gobs of centrifuges.

What a "deal" that Neville Barack Hussein Chamberlain Obama can wheel.

President Ronald Reagan helped Pakistan violate U.S. law and purchase key material for its nuclear weapons in the United States. Reagan also falsely certified to Congress that Pakistan did not have nuclear weapons so that the U.S. could continue sending the country hundreds of millions of dollars in aid each year.

Yep, negotiating with the Iranian radicals and their fresh-from-the Revolution Ayatollah who were holding American hostages, and illegally selling them arms so he could fund his equally illegal Contra war in Venezuela.

Yep, those were the good old days! [/sarcasm]

Your perpetual salivating fondness for the Boland Amendment does not and did not retroactively make Armed Service missions illegal nor legitimately open those Armed Forces to defunding mid-mission, as you so often like to claim. Just because the ineffectual effeminate Democraps of the day were able to pass the Boland Amendment as mere jabbing Reagan in the eye does not mean they had a clue what they were doing, nor that they were patriotic in their stabbing in the back the American Servicemen who faithfully served.

It's also funny watching the traitorous reichwing nut jobs wring their hands and whine because they can't gin up another phony war for profit.

Well, congress does with all the Israel PAC money they depend on, but all they can do right now is cry.

YES.

DEFINITION: A Semite is a member of any of various ancient and modern Semitic-speaking peoples, mostly originating in the Near East, including: Akkadians (Assyrians and Babylonians), Ammonites, Amorites, Arameans, Chaldeans, Canaanites (including Hebrews/Israelites/Jews/Samaritans and Phoenicians/Carthaginians), Eblaites, Dilmunites, Edomites, Amalekites, Turukku, Ethiopian Semites, Hyksos, Arabs, Nabateans, Maltese, Mandaeans, Mhallami, Moabites, Shebans, Meluhhans, Maganites, Ubarites, Sabians and Ugarites.

That includes Palestinians. In your case, both your comprehension and your compassion are found lacking!

In your case, both your comprehension and your compassion are found lacking!

from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism

Antisemitism (also spelled Anti-Semitism or anti-semitism) is prejudice against, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews as a national, ethnic, religious or racial group.[1][2] A person who holds such positions is called an "antisemite". Antisemitism is widely considered a form of racism.[3]

While the conjunction of the units anti, Semite and ism indicates antisemitism as being directed against all Semitic people, the term was popularized in Germany in 1873 as a scientific-sounding term for Judenhass ("Jew-hatred"),[4] although it had been used for at least two decades prior,[5] and that has been its normal use since then.[6] For the purposes of a 2005 U.S. governmental report, antisemitism was considered "hatred toward Jews—individually and as a group—that can be attributed to the Jewish religion and/or ethnicity."[7]

In your case, both your comprehension and your compassion are found lacking! Unless you lay claim to just being really dense.

Propaganda within Nazi Germany was taken to a new and frequently perverse level. Hitler was very aware of the value of good propaganda and he appointed Joseph Goebbels as head of propaganda.

Did you forget to mention that Goebbels learned propaganda from the American Progressives? That translates to todays Liberals, Communists, Socialists aka Democrats.

Not to mention that Obama has agreed to let them reduce their centrifuge count down to 6,000 - that is down from the 800 they had when Sheriff Obama started enforcing this sanction.

And now State Department info-bimbo Marie Harf explains that Obama was wrong to admit the the terms of the "deal" would pave the way for Iran to have nuclear weapons. She said Obama was mistaken during his NPR interview.

Iran could be able to obtain a nuclear weapon... of the emerging nuclear deal, President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday.

Under the framework announced last week, Iran would be kept at least one year away from a bomb for the first decade of the deal, Obama said as he sought to sell the deal to skeptics.

Yet that constraint would stay in place only for 10 years, at which point some restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities would be eased.

Breakout time refers to how long it would take to build a bomb if Iran decided to pursue one full-bore — in other words, how long the rest of the world would have to stop it. U.S. intelligence officials estimate Iran's breakout time is currently two to three months.

Obama's comments to NPR appeared to suggest that even with a nuclear deal, Iran could shrink its breakout period to almost zero once the initial restrictions expire.

"I think his words were a little mixed up there, but what he was referring to was a scenario in which there was no deal," said State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf.

Despite their assurances, Obama and his aides have not specified how long it would take Iran to build a bomb ... Harf said it would be more than zero — meaning the world would still have some time to act — but didn't say whether that period would be longer or shorter than Iran's current breakout period of two to three months.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, reacted tersely to Obama's comments, arguing that the president had confirmed what critics of the deal have long feared. He said Tehran was taking the long view and cautioned that the Iranian regime could exploit the easing of restrictions to fulfill its ambitions of exporting revolution across the globe.

"It is clear that this 'deal' is a direct threat to peace and security of the region and the world," Boehner said. Considering Iran's history of evading international inspections, he added, "no one should believe that the proposed inspection and verification are bullet-proof."

The tough talk from Boehner suggested congressional leaders were continuing to sour on the framework deal that Obama and world leaders reached with Iran last week in Switzerland. Previously, Boehner had expressed serious concerns about the deal's parameters, but withheld full judgment until lawmakers had time to digest all the details.

Other top lawmakers, including some members of Obama's party, have been pressing for Congress to hold a vote on whether to approve the deal — a prospect Obama has rejected outright. Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., is pushing legislation that would also prevent Obama from using his own authority to temporarily waive existing U.S. sanctions while Congress debates the deal.

The White House raised a new concern to Corker's bill on Tuesday, objecting to a provision that would require the administration to eventually certify to Congress that Iran is not carrying out terrorist attacks against Americans. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that provision "essentially makes the agreement contingent upon Iran renouncing terrorism."

The wrangling over the finer points of the deal came as the president seeks to quiet a growing chorus questioning whether the deal he and world leaders have negotiated merely delays the certainty of a nuclear-armed Iran. Obama has insisted confidently that Iran will not get a nuclear weapon on his watch, which ends in roughly 20 months, but has made no similar assurances about his successors.

Tehran has always maintained it doesn't want a nuclear bomb, but the international community has been skeptical, and America's close ally Israel considers a nuclear Iran an existential threat.
