Hey RWEDers,

A few months ago I told you about job training that I was going through at a local University that was free to displaced workers, veterans and low income earners who are looking to better themselves.

I get the feeling that most of the posters in here are not in need of something like this, but if you know anybody you care about that is down on their luck and you have some free time on your hands the best thing you could do for them is to find out if there is anything available in your area like this and encourage them to sign up for it and to see it through. This is seriously one of the BEST things I've ever done in my life.

Meanwhile, I was fired from my part time BS job at The Mart last week, so I have zero income at the moment. It was a long time coming. The new regime of management that took over late last year is just so oppressive, and I've never been the type of person to sit back watch people I work with be pushed around needlessly.

I'm not mad about being fired in the least bit, nor am I worried about my future because i know that three months from now I will be earning at least twice the hourly wage I was stuck at for nearly three years, and it will be FULL time, with available overtime and with full benefits. It will also be in a field that can't EVER be sent to India or China, so even if a layoff happens because of a company issue I won't have a problem finding another job quickly.

Actually, if this training is the BEST thing to happen to me in a very long time, losing my job is the 2nd best thing. Up until now I had just kind of been coasting through the class. I was at the top of the class, but I never spent any time outside of the classes studying aside from a few days of cramming before the first certification test. I was still drinking a case or three of beer a week in between work and school and letting everything else around me fall apart.

Everything changed this week. Not only did I spend about 15 hours extra at school after the class ended, taking advantage of the training facilities we have at our disposal, but I'm halfway through some MUCH needed spring cleaning in my house and I'm probably the first person in my state that mowed their lawn. It's amazing how much time there is in a week when you're not spending 40 hours drinking the days away.

To be honest, I'm having a few beers right now, but I deserve a little treat after what has been the most productive week I've had in almost three years. I haven't had any beers since my tri-weekly bender last Thursday. Instead of buying a 30 pack and "trusting" myself not to get carried away, I only bought a 12 pack. Even still, I have shit to do tomorrow, and I plan on getting up early to start getting it done so I have no intention of drinking all of them. I've got a lot of wasted time to start making up for. :)

Enough about that though....

I earned my first certificate in Mechanics I a while back. You needed 70% to pass and I got a 90%. The Electronics I test is coming up in three weeks and my goal is to get 100%. With all the extra work I'm putting into it now I don't think that will be a problem. All I have left after that is Electronics II and Programmable Logic Controllers, and then a one month unpaid internship. With all of this knowledge under my belt though I will be looking for jobs on my own and hopefully won't have to work full time for free for an entire month before I start earning money close to what I was making back in 2009. :)

I didn't know a single thing about any of this before. After this week, I know how generators and motors work and how they are made. Two weeks from now, I will know how to troubleshoot systems and wiring and know exactly what needs to be replaced if production comes to a halt because of faulty equipment.

As a bonus, I FINALLY UNDERSTAND college level algebra! I dropped out of that class three times and just gave up ever getting a college degree because of it. I simply couldn't study it because it meant nothing to me. I'm fairly certain that after this is all said and done and I've got a job I could go back to school to take that class and finally pass it.

Being stuck in a dead end job, surrounding yourself with other people in that position, and feeling like any skills you had gained before are worthless is crippling. One of my friends who got out of that place months ago said of our old job "It's where souls go to die". I couldn't have said it better myself.

Help is out there, if you look for it. Sometimes all you need is a little direction.

I'm grateful for this opportunity and from here out I promise myself that I will make the absolute most of it.

Pay attention to that PLC training - that will set you above the fray.

What are the details about this "free" job training that includes PLC training? What is it sponsored by? State? VA? University? That sounds like something I could recommend to folks.

:)

I only come here when going on my benders :)

I'm not a bender now, but I am indulging a little tonight. I have spent over 40 hours this week making a Google Doc study guide.

I won't need it to study, because this is how I learn. Everything I have written in this 50+ page document is things that I KNOW now. I am different. I am more intelligent. I have a much greater understanding about how our world works... all of the things that we all take for granted and don't bother to learn anything about.

I've been making friends unintentionally these last few weeks. I've gotten Government paid workers in touch with College types to work together to offer even more free training to anyone from dumb kids who take it for granted to moms who couldn't afford the tests and training if they weren't free, and all I have to do is flash a smile and throw a bone this way and that and I have people who smile whenever I come into a room and know my name.

I'd LOVE to show you the doc I'm making to pass the next test, but you all would know my name then. I love all of you Real Worlders because except for the special few, you can call me Jack. :)

I hope everything is going great for you JSF.

There are doors opening before me that I never even saw before.

Monitarily, noting has changed yet, but I am a completely different person now. My mind works differently. Synapses are overlapping each other in ways that never happened when I just got high and drunk in between meaningless work shifts. I even have asperations of becoming an Engineer one day now. Even though I might be 45 when I get the education, it doesn't sound so bad.

I LOVE learning.

I don't think I was a worthless alcoholic. I was just really fucking bored with life.

To answer your question, again, the only reason I'm posting here right now is because I am drinking now. I'm enjoying my Friday night to myself. Sad that it's with myself, but happy that it's been 3 weeks since I've done so and that I've put Meaningful Miles under my feet before drinking before doing so.

Giving up Drinking Cold Turkey is hard. Especially when you haven't smoked weed either for over 6 weeks.

I am here now, to tell you that what I'm doing is fucking awesome!

I'm doing everyting I can to make sure that everyone in my class passes the next test too.

I have a belief that the future holds a life for me where I will be happy doing what I do for a living.

I always knew I was smart before, but when you start to TRULY understand the HEART of Power that EVERYONE is dependent on, you can truly be happy.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you're not happy....

Keep looking.....

Don't Settle.

Hey Signy and Jongs...

Thanks for the support.

I made a copy of my document without any obvious indicators of who I really am.

I talked to my old man today and he finally took a look at it. He said it look like something it would take years to make. :) Nah.... just a little bit of hard work and generally refraining from negative pastimes.

Let me know what you think. Honestly, I believe that if you spend a little bit of time actually reading it, you will be a smarter person.

I made a lot of the diagrams myself in Paint. I wanted to make it something that people in my class would remember from actual examples we had and the notes I had on them. There's at least 20 pictures I made myself in this document.

I've guaranteed that anyone who studies this guide will pass the test. I believe that with all of my heart. I got 90% on the Mechanics test, but I am shooting for 100% on the electricity test.

Test is on Thursday. Wish me luck. :)

Good luck.

Section 13 has 4 remaining questions?

Section 11. Your statement of smaller wire gauge has higher capacity should read that the smaller wire gauge NUMBER provides the higher capacity of amps, otherwise the statement tends toward confusion. Slang results in gauge being refered to as thicker, thinner, and "smaller" can be thought of as thinner, but the smaller gauge NUMBER is actually the thicker.
Or, "smaller number of gauge" for the sake of clarity.

Hey JSF...

Not sure how far along the doc was when I sent it, but #1 in section 11 says that the lower the smaller number of the wire gauge allows for higher Ampacity (capacity of amps).

I really appreciate that you took a time to look at it though. My "Gran Torino" of a teacher we've got took time out of his week to help us study for an additional 4 hours today, unpaid, and based the entire session off of this document. I made notes that I will fix this weekend after the test for future classes, but he actually said that if this document gets out they'll probably change the test lol.

There were 18 of us in the beginning. Only 11 remain. Only 3 passed the Mechanics test.

I'm not even studying now. I know I'm going to pass and unless there are some wild curveballs I can't reason I'm going to be pretty pissed at myself if I can't get 100%.

My real test for myself here is have I created something and motivated those of the other 10 of us that need it to pass? Have I simplified it enough that anyone can understand it?

An early version of this document was MUCH more complicated and although my teacher would never dissuade me from learning more than I need to pass, he let the class know where I veered WAY off topic and I edited and re-edited it to "dumb it down" for the class and cert we're going for.

It's basically complete now, but I haven't made the final edits after our awesome session today. I'll have to show that to you once I finish it, although I guaranty that if you know what's in these 51 pages you will pass the exam.

A 58 year old who was laid off in the class told me he's collecting money to get me something nice for doing this. I told him I was just happy to help other people in shitty situations and didn't want anything. He told me I could have made this and been selfish and kept it to myself and I didn't. I couldn't insult them by not accepting what they offer. One guy who was born in Guinie shook my hand and hugged me and told me that what I've done was a blessing.

I'm just happy to help. The only other white guy left in my class is pretty much a 30 year old Walter White. He looks like him, and is at least as smart, and doesn't need the help. He only got 2% less than I did on the Mechanics test.

The course we're taking teaches SOOOOOO MUUUUCCCCCH info that it's hard to sift through what will actually be on the test. I understand so much more than what is in this document, but I narrowed down the study to what will actually be asked while stripping away the superfluous for those of us with a lot less free time than I have.

I'm thrilled to spend so much of my free time doing something positive like this for myself and other people instead of drinking and getting high all the time. :)

Wish the rest of my class luck. Pray for them, if that's your thing.

Don't waste your wishes or prayers on me. I could pass this exam tomorrow with a blindfold and my arms tied behind my back. ;)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

An Inductor in a DC circuit is a Short Circuit.

An Inductor is Opposite of a Conductor.
DC is Opposite of AC.
An Open Circuit is Opposite of a Short Circuit.

Therefore, and Inductor in an AC circuit is an Open Circuit.
A Conductor in a DC circuit is an Open Circuit.
A Conductor in an AC circuit is a Short Circuit.

XL = 2pƒL tells you that an Inductor is a Short Circuit in "DC" because "f" (frequency) in DC is always 0, which means that XL = Zero Ohms (Zero Resistance).

That's all you need to know. The rest you can answer through deductive reasoning.

Speaking of Short Circuit... how is this for a topical "pump me up" song?

I wonder how many of the 11 are old/young enough to get the reference ;)

Smaller Gauge = Larger Wire.

I know it's confusing. I also know there is a reason why it happened that way, but it's one of the things I put out of my mind for this test. The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system is such.

The only two wire sizes and ampacities that people in my class really need concern themselves with are 12 gauge and 14 gauge.

12 gauge is capable of handling 20 Amp circuits. 14 gauge is capable of handling 15 Amp circuits. Aside from A/C units, most houses wouldn't need anything more than this. However apartment complexes that use electric stove tops or even individual heaters run off of electricity would need much "lower" gauge wires, such as 8 gauge for 45 Amp stove tops or 6 gauge for Electric Heaters. :)

A conductor in a DC circuit is an open circuit? Meaning there will be no conductance?

Only when it begins on the Sine wave.

With a Conductor, the Voltage trails the Current by 90degrees, so when the circuit is first powered up, a conductor acts as an open circuit.

ELI the ICEman.

The L in ELI stands for Inductor. E is voltage and I is current. Current lags behind Voltage by 90degrees with Inductors.

ICE... C is the Capacitor. Voltage lags 90degrees behind Current with Capacitors.

This all happens within 1/4 of a sine wave which if we're talking about 60Hz like in US systems happens 60 times per second, meaning that an inductor in a DC circuit is an Open Circuit for about .004 seconds.

I'm not sure why this is important, but it is, even though the time frame is so miniscule.

I assume it's because this tiny little micro-kick is all a motor needs with a good capacitor to make sure that when you fire it up it will turn Clockwise instead of Counter-Clockwise, or vice-versa.

I haven't gotten to that Level yet, but I hope to get there.

I apprecite your quizing me. Did I say anything wrong, to the best of your knowledge?

I plan on being a much less sexy and much older and masculine version of Kaylee someday. :)

Also, an "Open Circut" means that there isn't any circuit at all. That means that for the first 1/4 of a Hz, there is zero voltage with a capicitor next in the circuit, although there is full voltage.

OOPS...

I fudged it up.... I didn't mean Conductor. I meant Capacitor.....

Before explaining any further, you might understand now....

NOT conductor. CAPACITOR. ;)

a wire is a conductor. you are a conductor. aside from inorganic material like plastic, you'd be hard pressed to find anything that wasn't a conductor in some way.

oops...

I meant a Capacitor.....

Capacitors will behave as an Open Circuit in DC. They can also be used to block DC current while allowing AC current to flow for that reason. That gets into a whole bunch of RF and TV frequency stuff that's a little above my paygrade right now. ;)

Now I can agree with that. You may wish to correct your other posts about that, so others don't get confused.
Capacitors and inductors can work together to produce resonant frequencies.

Bittersweet Victory today, for sure....

I passed, but only with a 75%.

3 of the 12 didn't take the test today. 1 of them I know already rescheduled but I don't know about the other two. Of the 9 that took the test, I'd be very surprised if anyone else passed it.

This was hands down the hardest multiple choice test I've ever taken in my life. Unless you knew an answer 100%, there was no narrowing down things by throwing out the two bullshit answers.

The questions were designed in a way to be so purposefully confusing and the answers themselves were enigmas.

8:00AM - I walk in believing I'm going to get 100% and everyone is going to pass.

8:15AM - I've already skipped 7 of the first 15 questions my first round. I only answer questions quickly on the first round that I know are 100% right.

9:00AM - I'm having a doubly hard time on the test now because I'm carrying the burden of knowing that IF I actually pass this test I'll likely be the only one to pass it.

10:35AM - I cross my fingers and click "Final Submit"....

I pass... just barely...

I am the last person to leave.

Part of me appreciates how hard this test was developed. Even though you only need 70% to pass, you BETTER f'ing know what you're doing to get that C- grade.

The other part of me feels like a failure and a liar. Based off of how the Mechanics test went I guaranteed my classmates that if they memorized my work that they would pass this test. My teacher solidified this by basing his impromptu 4 hour study session around my document.

I knew an hour into the test that nobody was going to pass. It's amazing that I passed myself.

Yay!

Did you write a list of the questions or topics/subjects which you were not sure about, or got wrong? If you have not, you should review your document to remind yourself, and then make a list as complete as you can. Later you can make adjustments to your document. But first, identify which portions are lacking.

Be happy as if you won $1,000 at the Lottery. Not everyone can win a prize or else the Lottery goes broke.

But why did so many flunk the test? Why was the test so difficult? I think I know why even if I am mystified at exactly what you signed up for. This isn't like taking a test at a community college that makes more money as more students pass. Instead, this training pays the student while they work as apprentices. They don't want to waste money on apprentices who can't learn fast enough to finish the program.

That's my guess, anyway, based on looking at local 716. www.houstonjatc.com/apprentice.htm

And be ready for the drug tests. I expect you will be tested at nearly every work site you train at. http://ibew716.net/apprentices

Wow.... just WOW!

Can I get your permission to link to your document? I want to make it required reading on our E_Learning system for inspectors and investigators.

I tried to PM you, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face;
With stars to fill my dream;
I am a traveler of both time and space;
To be where I have been

Hello Deverse,

I'm thrilled to allow you to link to it. There are still some fine tunings that I need to make to it though. For instance, I speak of KiloHenry's being a thing, but unless you've got a Flux Capacitor in your Delorian ready to take you back to 1955, you're probably never going to use them.

One of the guys in my class besides me passed. He wasn't one of the 3 I would have thought. I'm extremely proud that he is the only other one that passed. I didn't even study my own notes and barely passed. His passing is worth more to me than my own.

If you want to edit things, just let me know. Let me know how to reach you in email and I can make it so you can edit the document. I'm done editing it now. I would love for other people to learn from it and build upon it though :)

Thank you so much D.

I didn't make a list. I got a printout of my 75% today. It told me my percentage and number of how many questions I got right in a subject.

The Relation between Inductors and Capacitors, and Memory Logic were my downfalls.

In all Honesty, I didn't study my document at all.

One guy besides me passed.

He was not the one I would have suspected passed.

He made a point to sit right next to me for PLC's. I told him that I'll train him if he can stand me getting frustrated when he doesn't know how to use a mouse.

Only 2 of 11 passed....

But we're all still here. :)

It's my job to make sure they have to work twice as hard at their jobs for 11 of us when they were only expecting 5 of us left now. ;)

I didn't win the lotto. I wrote the book. Unfortunately, I didn't study the book I wrote. The guy who passed is over 20 years older than me and I would never have suspected him to be one of the guys to pass. I am very humble to the fact that he passed. He has worked HVAC most of his life, but given the fact that he's a part of this project, and he's a 50-something mexican, I'm pretty sure it was without a Union Card.

I'm afraid to ask his score. He's so humble about getting it that it looks like it pains him when soembody asks if he passed.

4 weeks before the test he asked me to upload everything on our Thumbdrives provided and any extra info I had to his laptop. It's old enough that it can only handle XP, can't get on the internet, and he has to plug in a mouse because the track buttons are jacked up.

THIS is the guy who passed the test.

He was studying off a guide I hadn't updated for 3 weeks before the test.

I bet he got a higher score than I did lol....
