"The conference was attended by the Human Right Council president Joachim Rücker, who said in the opening statement that “Religious intolerance and violence committed in the name of religion rank among the most significant human rights challenges of our times.”

While the article suggests hosting a Human Rights event in Saudi Arabia has upset rights activists, and it is obvious why. It is also obvious that Saudi Arabia and Mecca are the center of the Sunni faith which is deeply embroiled in todays violence.

Saudi Arabia is one of the worst offenders when it comes to Human Rights, yet how do you broach the subject of religious war and intolerance without the presence of Saudi Arabia. It makes some sense to allow them to take a lead on this to see if they can bring some stability to the region.

I think we need Human Rights Activists there protected with impunity to confront the Saudi's on the rule of law and how it is a better system than the one currently in use there.

HAHAHAHA!

I read that title and - in between laughing my ass off- I also threw up in my mouth a little. It was a decidedly mixed reaction!

As long as Saudi Arabia leads the world in beheadings and floggings and stonings, and as long as Saudi Arabia continues to recruit, train, fund, and arm radical Islamic jihadists throughout the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Caucasus, and South Asia (Pakistan) I can't see any reason to grant Saudi Arabia a shred of credibility on "human rights".

But thanks for posting the article, it was informative. And funny!

I agree with you Brenda the these bad actors need to receive a strong message from the rest of the world that it is time to adopt the rule of law and join us in the 21 century.

Religion is the problem. As you can see many are strongly drawn to it and they constantly misinterpret it's point.

Yes, but also their education which is religion based. That needs to be taken out of the equation.

The Saudi ruling class made a deal with the Mullah's a long time ago to solidify their power. The deal was we rule and you can have your Madrasas.

These people are entrenched in religion. It's going to take at least another hundred years.

Saudi blogger Raif Badawi sentence 'a slow death', says wife

Quote:

Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has upheld the sentence of 1,000 lashes and 10 years of imprisonment on blogger Raif Badawi, despite a foreign outcry. Mr Badawi ran the Liberal Saudi Network, which encouraged online debate on religious and political issues for four years. He was arrested in 2012 for "insulting Islam through electronic channels".

Speaking from Canada, his wife Ensaf Haidar told BBC's Newsnight she feared his punishment would start again after Friday prayers. This video [there is no link to a video-SIGNY] contains brief images of Mr Badawi's punishment, which some viewers may find disturbing.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-33105945

1,000 lashes would kill most people after the first fifty to hundred, from shock. Saudi Arabia flogs it's prisoners the "smart" way: they flog until the person start to pass out, then halt the whipping until the person recovers (days, weeks) then do it again. The imprisoned blogger has already had his first round of flogging (which I believe was halted after 50 lashes) and he has already been returned to his jail cell to "recover".

Now, the interesting thing about this flogging is not that Saudi Arabia is doing it at all (because they've been doing this for decades to their religious and political prisoners) but that we are hearing about in in the western press.

Seriously. News of Saudi Arabia's barbaric treatment of its religious/political prisoners is JUST NOW making international headlines. And I have to ask again: Have you HEARD any of this in MSM during the past 20-30 years???

And since our "news" compliantly paints our allies as "good guys" and our enemies as "bad guys" (no matter how they ACTUALLY behave) what does this say about our (western) relationship with Saudi Arabia?

At a low point, perhaps?

If so, might it be over ISIS, which (despite our background support of al Qaida, Nusra, Muslim Bortherhood etc) is just a bit too radical for us to tolerate?

Questions to consider. Timing is everything.

Perhaps our news is different, but we get a fair degree of information on saudi arabia on these issues. Particularly as from time to time a foreigner gets caught up in something and gets sentenced to death or lashing. Occasionally a terrible story emerges about some poor woman stoned to death for being raped.
A lot of australians work in Saudi Arabia because you can earn enormous amounts of money, but its a pretty horrid existence stuck in western enclaves.

Saudi Arabia contains the root of radical Islam through Wahhabism, an intolerant and puritanical form of Islam that has undoubtedly influenced and feeds modern extremism in the Muslim world. Nobody would have cared two bits for a bunch of hardline desert Arabs, if they hadn't discovered oil and become incredibly powerful.

You cant change what happens within a country, not easily anyway and not without repercussions for the ones wanting change. But you can refuse to deal with countries that abhorrent human rights abuses. Of course it also helps if you can clean up your own backyard before preaching to others.

Another reason to move away from reliance upon fossil fuels. The sooner nations can say 'stick your oil' the better.

One of the articles that woke me up to the horrors of Saudi Arabia came out well over 25 years ago, when I was still young enough and had enough free time to read the "thick form" women's magazines. There was a competitor to Cosmopolitan .... I don't remember which one .... that had a long story that I started reading and couldn't put down.

In it, they described the then-current culture of Saudi Arabia (which has only become more intolerant through the years, if anything) which held Saudi women under slave-like conditions. At the time, there were a lot of American soldiers based there.

Well, there were two teenage Saudi girls of fairly wealthy means ... families lived in what we would think of as "upper middle class" surroundings ... who took a shine to foreign servicemen - Americans, in particular. They cooked up a plan whereby they could see Americans and would do "anything but" take off their veils. (The idea, I think, was that with their veils on they couldn't be positively ID'd after the fact.)

But after not more than a few months, their activities were discovered by their families.

What was to become of these young women?

The first was married off to some desert geezer.

Select to view spoiler:

The second was bound, wrapped in cloth, weighted with stones, and drowned in the family swimming pool.

I've since spoken with an Ethiopian who personally knew Ethiopians working for Saudi families. I learned about one women in particular - known to my co-worker - who worked as a maid, whose teenage son was raped and killed by one of the (many) Saudi princes. When she complained, they threw her $500 and told her to go away.

Reading the stories of Ethiopian, Somali, Malaysian etc maids who work there- is a constant story of endless work, rape, and non-payment, where their passports are held by the employer to keep their slaves from running away.
If you're male, and a member of the royal tribe (which has about 3000 members), you're also reasonably wealthy and allowed anything ... and I mean anything ... in your family compound. Drugs (including alcohol), slavery, murder ... Not only is Saudi Arabia "puritanical", it is incredibly corrupt. Which is why they want Wahhabism, BUT NOT IN THEIR COUNTRY. For export, only!

Naw, we hear the same reports. For a lot of years I saw it as something that was sad but over there. Now that this stone age culture is affecting the world including us, I would like to see it become to painful a way of life for them to maintain which forces change.

Don't do drugs or even really drink for that matter. No, it is what it is. Your links are there for all to see. Look at the crew from skeptic fence you keep referring to. If I saw those guys outside my house I'd call the cops.

Talk about putting down the bong. Maybe it is you who should, as well as your buddies on skeptic fence.
