How many of you are planning to see Fifty Shades of Grey, either as a rental or in theaters?

I found a really funny vid on youtube called "Elders react to the Fifty Shades Trailer" btw. I'm betting my grandma would get very angry. I'd love to have the cool one.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I saw a trailer (preview) of the movie, and it hit just about every bad, predictable trope on the topic (rich, handsome, young, powerful man meets young, attractive ....) I just kind of laughed. Maybe the book is better.

No interest.

If I'm bored, and have lots of free time, I may check it out on Netflix or HBO, what ever.

But there are about 100 other things I'd rather watch before that, so...

I've only read a handful of romance novels, and 95% percent of those were set in Ireland, go fig

I'll admit to a passing fancy with the BDSM thing, but I don't think I could ever be the person who pursues that as a hobby. I would love to hear the results of a psych study profile on people that do though. And I have a feeling that this movie WILL gross very high.

We will probably see it as a couple at some point, just for fun.

Oh wait, we have one of these

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

I know that 50 Shades of Grey was a discussion item for the women that I work with, both some time ago for the book and more recently about the movie. I don't know of any guy who read it, I didn't as it sounded as interesting as the Twilight series of books.
I trust their judgement on many things at work so I have no problem trusting their opinion on a book. They pretty much found the book to be very poorly written and the story dull. The opinion was the poorest "bodice ripper" they had ever read was a Pulitzer prize winner in comparison. Consensus was the male character is a douche and the female is an idiot.
It didn't sound like any were interested in the movie given how abominable the book was, so I doubt I'll be seeing it.

Sort of makes one wonder exactly what made it so popular?

Knew a girl once, who I thought fit a very specific stereotype.... NE raised, well educated, successful, more liberal in her views, ... see, I'd have thought she would be the very type who'd reject the bdsm stuff, in how it objectifies women ? Turns out, she was quite into it. Here was this girl who looked all the world as smart, 'empowered' , independent, and yet... she liked being dominated. Go figure.

I don't think that the sensations they desire during sex are the same ones they have during the day. I get that BDSM is more about feeling pretend ways about things they wouldn't normally to heighten the experience. I don't think most of them would really want to go to lunch with someone who treats them like dirt. Sex is entirely a different animal.

I think it being the first mainstream series maybe gave women who are curious an excuse to pick it up and read when they normally wouldn't, and maybe even the whole ridiculously written aspect was more entertaining than they claim. I haven't read them, but I have read others on the subject. I doubt the movie will be as clunky as the book is reportedly, because it's harder to pull off quirky sex scenes when you can SEE people moving around...

I do think I'm getting old though, because the people they picked out for the movie DO look like kids to me Had to happen sometime

I think most women who grow up with any kind of libido before it's really legal to do such things has THOUGHT that. Yanno, it's not MY fault then.
An actual stranger acting on such a thing would not be fun, of course.

I'm sure the BDSM people are saying "Yaaay, we're going mainstream!" heh.

I think whether or not it's something you are into depends on if you can separate the pain/fear response. Hubby absolutely CANNOT. Pain=Fear=Run away.

Me, I'm in pain all the time so it's just another variation of a sensation, and it even has the capability to distract from what I normally feel, which can be good. Endorphins can flip everything into something good as well.

The director being censored? From her interview:
Quote:

In the end, the sort of censorship that bothered her was the way the mainstream rejects idiosyncrasy. “We went to a beautiful aquarium and there were these jellyfish. They’re so sexual, jellyfish, when you look at them in tanks – just the way they move, the fluidity. So there was a scene when we go into Anastasia’s world and her head, and we just had these jellyfish on the screen. It was beautiful, very impressionistic. Everyone went, ‘What the fuck are those jellyfish doing there?’” So she had to take them out. “I wasn’t happy to let them go. I could see they weren’t going to work for a wide audience, but I could also hear Sight & Sound magazine going, ‘The jellyfish were amazing’, and because I care about the Sight & Sound review, I was hanging on to them for dear life.”

And that is as far as Taylor-Johnson goes when it comes to making any distinction between high-brow and low-brow, or any mention of the fact that she may have had to compromise. “After a while,” she says contemplatively at one point, “the studio realised, ‘OK, we’ve hired a slightly anarchic artist. How are we going to rein her in a bit?’”

Since 50 Shades is a trilogy, the producers need 3 uniform movies. The producers can't have a product that does not conform to the next two movies, even if that means firing the first director and hiring somebody new for the next movie, a movie that might not even be made. Did I mention that the director had to leave the UK for LA with her 4 children and husband to make this movie? She hasn't gone back, yet. Probably depends on how well the first 50 Shades does at the box office.

How is enjoying sex and eagerly volunteering to participate in either the movie or the act itself any of those things? This is the gay marriage argument all over again. Two people consenting to do something they enjoy has nothing to do with you. I've had arguments with Two about foot fetishism, which I find odd and just on a purely germy level pretty gross, but I would never call two people engaging in it inhuman because I am not them and do not feel the same way and thus incapable of rendering an opinion on the act itself. I've had foot massages that have felt pretty good though...does that make me inhuman? No.

Spock was right. You DO have to die before you can give a valid opinion on death. Words are wholly inadequate, especially English words...

Some people juggle geese...

Oh, and if you've ever slapped someone on the ass, bitten them, gotten aggressive, tied someone up, used nails during sex- CONGRATULATIONS you have engaged in BDSM. So lets not be hypocritical just because someone else's line goes a little farther than yours does...

And I didn't say it was "INhuman" , but it DEhumanizes. There's a difference. The latter has more to do w/ dignity and respect.

They both imply something less than human...

The only time sex has to do with either is when someone is an unwilling participant. If you've ever watched porn, then there are a great many people who say YOU are inhuman and dehumanizing. Sex is one of those basic human things, so I fail to see how it's dehumanizing.

We were set to watch it last night on Amazon rental as the child was staying with friends, but unfortunately I picked up a stomach bug and the last thing I would want to do for the last three days was watch anything remotely sexual May take a while until we get another chance.

We had to pick up food while out and stopped at a White Castle. Stupid, I know...

We did finally get around to watching The Kingsman, was an interesting film.
I get that they gave Sam Jackson a lisp so he wouldn't just be doing the same character he's done HUNDREDS of times, but egad was it annoying...

Finally got a chance to watch it together.

1.Dakota Johnson is really really thin. Maybe it's norm for her, but damn...she raises her arms and I think "Wonder what concentration camp she's been in?" It's S&M for the Abercrombie and Fitch crowd...

2. Grey is an idiot. He's all about "control" in the first half, and then doesn't mind taking her virginity five seconds after she said she was a virgin, and then five seconds later strapping her down.

A blind deaf mute could've said this wasn't going to work...

3. Steele is an idiot. She leads him on, knowing what will happen, then tries to whine and manipulate to get her way. She was playing WAAAAY above her level. Then tries to take the "high road" and guilt him with the car.
And what college kid THESE days DOESN'T KNOW THE TERMS DOMINANT AND SUBMISSIVE????? Please...

Happy to see Mack from "The Unit", but I'd rather see him in the leading role

Not so happy at the message. "Anyone who likes something different from you sexually MUST be fucked up." I should've figured that a mainstream movie about being sexually uninhibited would come wrapped in judgment and neurosis.

4. I am an idiot for having seen this movie

5. Can't wait to see what will happen in 2 and 3

My understanding is it's not.

The narrative prose of the book includes this sentence: "My inner goddess did the salsa" and the rest of it is not much better.

You can't expect much from fanfiction of Twilight I think. Hi-lit this ain't. It's meant to be enjoyable for some ladies who just want some cheap erotica and don't care how poorly it's written. Fine for them, but not worth a movie.

Wish, I think the general consensus is neither the book or the movie are a good representation of BDSM, and as such it was never going to be the liberation some fans thought it was.

I'd be very surprised if the 2nd and 3rd movie are made. Mostly because I've heard the guy forces her to get an abortion at one point. *sarcastic swoon.*

It's like the writer needed to one-up the godawful emergency vampire fang c-section in the Twilight series. It's all a joke.
