So, is Iran really serious, or are they just stalling for time?

I know that they pulled a clever move here. They've agreed to the terms of some (China, Russia, maybe France?) in exchange for veto promises, which they most certainly have against any upcoming resolution Bush/Blair/Ohlmert introduce.

How far will Iran go? How far should they go? Do they suspect we really couldn't afford another war? Is this a reason to go to war?

Just want to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

I wouldn't be surprised if they follow the North Korean model. Promise to stop enrichment in exchange for "incentives", then continue clandestine development until caught, at which time you demand all sorts of pre-conditions before you'll consider an offer of more "incentives" to close down your current secret development. Rinse and repeat every couple of years.

While I have no evidence to support this, I think they are just stalling for time.

By attacking Iraq, the one member of the Axis of Evil without weapons of mass destruction, the US has demonstrated that the only way to protect oneself from being invaded is to have those weapons.

I can't blame Iran (or any other nation) for pursuing nuclear technology. I would the same thing if I were in their postition.

Excellent points, all. I think you're both right. The NK model of defiance was a clear winner, NK is now a nuclear power, and they are in a much stronger position to negotiate. No one is going to invade, etc.

Iraq's strategy of appeasement of the west (destroying their WMDs, etc.) which has since been followed by Syria-Lebanon (removing the forces and batteries at US-Israeli requests) has proven disasterous in both instances.

But I think that Iran may actually wish to negotiate, it's just that I think they've figured out that they don't have to just do what the US says, they can negotiate with China, and if China tells the US not to do something, the US won't do it.

This last is where borrowing heavily from China has been a major strategic error. There are about ten million areas this admin. and the last, could have saved money, but chose to borrow instead. Now we're no longer a lone actor, and the rest of the world is figuring that out.
