An interesting article detailing one womans experience with skipping all hygiene for 40 days.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I used to supervise someone like that and I had to make him go home and shower and brush his teeth on his own time because we couldn't stand being near him.

But I do somewhat the same thing as this lady. I wash my hair with shampoo, use deodorant, and brush my teeth with toothpaste but I wash with warm water and a washcloth. Nothing else is necessary and my skin is very healthy and has been for years (except for the result of several very very bad sunburns). There is this notion that we should "exfoliate" dead skin cells. AAWWWKKK!! Those dead skin cells are protective of the growing skin underneath. The fresh, glowing look that people like to see is not the result of NO dead skin cells, but of FLAT dead skin cells. Dead skin cells become raised up and uneven and LOOK "dry" because of inflammation underneath and because of lack of cell signaling that causes the top cells to be irregularly shaped (Skin cells start our as cubes but flatten as they are pushed to the surface. The signaling results from short-chain fatty acids produced by bacterial fermentation, this is SUPPOSED to happen in the guts of healthy people with adequate soluble fiber intake. Don't forget that our skin is like our intestines but on the outside, so many of the same signaling that occurs in the gut occurs in the skin. So if this lady's skin and gut improved, it could be because of a systemic increase in short-chain fatty acids ).

Anyway, not an expert.

...but I manned ip and clicked it anyway. Geez - she's braver than I am. I've been know to let things go for 2 or 3 (or 4) days...and then there was that year-and-a-half stint of homelessness back in the late '90s...but I'd have gone crazy long before she did.

Thanks for the story, FredG!

He smelled like that when we got here!

CANTTAKESKY

I was recently hospitalized for severe joint and back pain. (Actually I just went to the ER for some pain meds, they admitted me, and I got stuck there for 2.5 weeks.) The pain has been debilitating and incapacitating. In the last 5 weeks, I have taken a shower once, brushed my teeth 4 times, brushed my hair 5 times, and gotten by with washcloth wipes everyday.

All I have to say is, don't take hygiene for granted. Being able to shower and shampoo is a GIFT. I completely understand the comment about shower envy.

Needs must, when the devil drives - Malbad, I grew up in some pretty horrific places, you do what you have to in order to survive, although as a do or die sticking point I never sold drugs, that was my line in the sand... but it was prettymuch the only one.

It leaves it's mark on you, those few who get out carry the ghosts on their back prettymuch forever.

You have my admiration for overcoming all that Frem, seriously.

As for me, the worst thing I ever bought myself was a nasty drug habit that took 30 years to kick. So I've seen horrific...but not as a child. Thanks for not selling me and my doper friends any drugs Frem, Adios Amigo!
