Keep the Shiny side up

And you thought the US Government was invading your privacy.

Quote:

All UK 'must be on DNA database'

The whole population and every UK visitor should be added to the national DNA database, a senior judge has said.
The present database in England and Wales holds details of 4m people who are guilty or cleared of a crime.

Lord Justice Sedley said this was indefensible and biased against ethnic minorities, and it would be fairer to include everyone, guilty or innocent.

This is where we're all headed, folks. I'm reminded of an appropriate Heinlein quote:

Quote:

Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surely curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The govt claims that DNA helps them solve 20,000 cases a year. It would be reasonable to ask them whether the majority of perps are found in the ranks of the previously convicted, whose DNA has a good reason to be on file... or the presumed innocent, whose DNA has no good reason to be onfile.

The US can probably have a law like this soon... just have to link it to terrorist or 9/11. We can call it... The Patriotic Spit on Terrorists Act!

They already get our fingerprints for driver's licenses. Now I know what they say - driving is a privilege not a right, and so your rights haven't been infringed on. So they'll just attached DNA samples to something like that - you don't NEED a social security card, do you ???

BTW - the only group I know that fights against that kind of thing is that looney ACLU.

Two points worth making.

1) The comment has a lot to do with the fact that the UK national DNA database is disorganised and potentially suspect --- dont think anyone wants to go to jail on erroneous DNA data. The Judge was in effect saying we need to clear this up.

2) There was a similar call when fingerprint evidence started to be more common. Just because someone says we should do something doesnt mean we should.

Ah, a third reason not to move to California! ;-)
Must remember to send NY state senate/house/gov a note not to follow CA lead in this case....

Fingerprints and fingerprint matching: Maybe not reliable.

http://truthinjustice.org/fingerprints.htm

Also, AFA DNA is concerned, if there is a 1/million chnace that someone else matches the five (or so) segments of DNA that are examined, in an urban area the size of LA that means that 11 people might be mistaken for you.

And a slightly more recent reference to fingerprinting challenges:

Wikipedia also had some interesting comments...

I definitely don't want my prints in the 'pool'.

I'm still of the opinion that if, and when, we create a government that can eliminate all 'crime', we will die as a society.

Not in my state (New Mexico). I've been fingerprinted to teach, but not to drive.

NY state: fingerprinting for day-care provider employees; but not teaching nor driver's license. Though in theory, I believe the fingerprints of the employee is supposed to be discarded after the review; as opposed to being kept on-line for future comparisons.
