Today I was fooling around with my son on a frozen lake, just running & sliding- we had no skates because we didn't know it would be cleared of the many feet of snow on it. So we were goofing around, and someones' dog was doing the same with us. Suddenly, while I was mock-skating, a bump in the mostly flat surface changed my footing, and I fell hard. Didn't really hurt myself, but I felt like an idiot- as a martial artist, this was most embarrassing (not that anyone else there would judge me on that level). I did some work in my head over angles, balance & such, and found that had I simply brought my arm into a tuck over my ear (instead of a semi-successful attempt at stopping the impact), I could have landed as hard, but with less flailing, and no pain whatsoever.
So I practiced it a few times, and found my thoery to be sound.
Once again, resisting the force of gravity was more of a waste of time than simply accepting & working with it.

Hey...could this apply to other situations? Like politically & stuff?

Careful, Chris - I've broken both wrists trying to fight gravity at various times. Eventually I learned: If the motorcycle's going down, you're going down with it; don't fight it, just tuck and roll.

Probably why I never broke any bones when I started mountain-biking. I learned that if I'm coming off the bike, the best thing to do is trust the helmet and tuck in my extremities. Lots of bruises, lots of blood, but no broken bones. :)

Back before my Sonisall was born, I had ONE accident on my bike, but I was all suited up like Iron Man, so all I had to do was wait for the slide to be over ( my leg was pinned under the bike), & get up and inspect my bike for damage.
But yeah, tuck is usually best, better if there's a roll involved to spread out the force of the impact.

I once had a one-in-a-million "wreck" on a 50cc Tomos Bullet.

I was slowing down to turn into a convenience store to get a pop and some smokes, and the front wheel caught a bump in the pavement the wrong way and jacknifed the handlebars, sending me right on over em - and here's the miller time moment for ya!

I was, at the time, at the very height of youthful vigor, and recently having parted with the military and done a lot of private-enterprise training with an eye to security/PMC type work, extremely fit and as agile as a floor gymnast besides.
(Oh those were the days...)

Since I was slowing and turning, I wasn't going all that fast, but it was a bit disconcerting, and as I vaulted off the bike, snapped into a breakfall roll*, rolled twice, and the angle of the toss sent me 180 degrees during, and I come to my feet, facing the other way...

AND CATCH THE FREAKING BIKE.
(remember it's a puny lil 50cc)

Damn that musta looked awesome, but the only spectator was a blind drunk wino sitting on the curb, alas.

I was of course uninjured, as I wear motorcross armor under an army field jacket when I ride, and being that I caught it before it hit the ground, didn't even so much as lose a mirror on the bike.

Course, if I tried that now, pieces might fly off, and I ain't talkin about the bike!

*If you ride, you should damn well know how to do a proper breakfall roll, here's a good demonstration.

On second thought, make sure the one you practice, as this one above does, allows multiple rolls, and does not, as many Ninjutsu breakfalls do, assume there is a soft mat under you - some of the breakfalls I watched to find this would be a bad, BAD idea to use when approaching the concrete at 30+ MPH.

Hehehe, I don't have to worry too much about falling on the ice, I just slap the right side of my knee and three small spring loaded spikes snap out the bottom of my right shoe.

That's what they're ostensibly for, mind you, since I live in Michigan and oft-times wind up walking rounds for guys who're snowed in, sick or what have you - I don't mind it, there's a certain serenity in wandering the grounds of an industrial park or apartment complex when everyone's asleep and the whole world goes quiet, and ya don't have to deal with people.

Of course, you really wouldn't wanna be kicked or stomped with em either.
