DREAMTROVE

I noticed a couple things
1. after aggressive lobbying by p. diddy to get them back together (save some record sales)
2. he still has a possible attempted murder charge against him.
Assume p. diddy power, he'll get off, we'll read about her as a "drug overdose, suicide, car accident" whatever cover they're using lately.

Okay, I'm not saying she deserved whatever she gets from here on out, but this kind of BS is going to make it *REALLY* hard to gather much sympathy for her next time he puts her in the hospital, or worse yet, the morgue.

When a man beats a woman, he doesn't get any second chances.

Yup. It's not her fault that there was a fist and a knife on the floor when she fell.

FREMDFIRMA

Well Mikey, a big problem with this is that a lotta girls don't have much experience with anything else.

Dealin with an issue related to that even now, so it's kinda foremost in mind.

Some of these girls, they come from an abusive home, have been immersed in the prison-pecking-order hell that is the forced "society" of public school and all too often a ghetto culture that gives them precious little, if any respect, you see.

So they assume a certain level of abuse is "normal" cause to them, it IS - and then seek out the stronger, more violent alpha types to protect them from the rest of the punkass horde, cause they got no experience or knowledge of men who behave any other way outside of fiction, which is what they consider such to be.

And no, that's not racial cause regarding this issue the only real difference between the trailer park and the inner city is the scenery, this shit happens everywhere, sadly.

And it ain't easy to unfuck that mindset, cause your words mean shit in light of their actual experiences, and even if they buy that YOU don't act that way they'll just consider you an oddball or fluke, some wacky throwback who believes in a world that doesn't exist for them - or worse, dismiss you as "weak" and unable to protect them properly from the OTHER barbarians.

And that doesn't even begin to include the problem of having no concept of male approval and affection that does NOT involve sex, either via an abusive father or the complete lack of one as an example of such things.

Not to mention all too often due to their home environment, a complete lack of needful life skills which would be required to strike out on their own, as well as little concept of how to aquire them, and precious damn little help from the handout-or-hoof-it social programs which greviously penalise any attempt at self-sufficiency.

See, you can't base a decision like that on YOUR experiences and have it make any sense, cause it don't - but those are YOUR experiences, not hers, and in her little world, the context of all she's ever known, they make perfect sense to her.

Not sayin that's exactly what it is, but damn me if I ain't seen it enough times to know why they do this stuff, you understand ?

And then they go on to have kids, who start the whole cycle anew...

Breaking THAT chain is a bitch, it's tricky but it can be done - and the first part of it is introducing them to a world outside that nasty little fishbowl of their own experiences, that relationships of mutual respect are NOT just TV faery tales, cause until you do that, to THEM, that's exactly what such things are.

Now you get the picture ?

It's likely the only world the girl has ever known, and instead of blaming her for that ignorance, we'd do well to strike at the social and environmental factors that foster it.

That being part and parcel of what I do, and why I know far more than I ever wanted to about this sorta thing - ain't no easy answers, but it helps to be askin the right questions, ok ?

Frem, I *get* that it's not easy to break, but it IS possible. I'm living proof. I was beaten pretty much every day of my childhood - an abusive father and two older brothers. It might have been "normal" to me, but I still knew it was WRONG, and vowed never to treat another living being that way. I've kept that vow.

Oddly, my brothers don't understand why we're not closer, and none of my family can understand why I don't have children of my own...

What factors made you able to be an exception, Mike (most follow the pattern set for them)?
I found myself in a somewhat similar situation in my childhood, & Star Trek sorta became my family, Kirk was like my father. All I grew to embrace in term of right & wrong came from Gene Roddenberry, not what I saw in front of me, thank goodness.

Eh, for me it was comic books.

Spider-man in particular.

Yeah, I had many such factors. Kirk was just the main one. Spidey was there, as well as Kwai-Chang Caine.
If there had been no TV or comics for me as a child, I might have ended up a monster.

What made me able to be an exception? I don't know, honestly. Empathy was probably the biggest part of it; every time I wanted to wail on someone, I'd think what it felt like from their side of it, because THAT was something I could relate to very well.

I found my weapons in books, in words, in knowledge. And I got the fuck out, fast as I could. I left at 16, worked wherever I could, surfed couches now and again, lived out of my car or outdoors if necessary, and did anything I had to do to make damn sure I *never* needed anyone's help.

It probably contributes a lot to my world-view, the general feeling that the world is filled with an awful lot of people who desperately need to have their skulls crushed with cinder blocks.

And it's a huge part of why I'll never have children - because I know that I'm too much like my father to ever risk putting a kid in the path of something like that.

Mike, I sailed around that part of the black. My kid's suffered a couple of spankings only.
Just trust yourself when the time is right- you're probably a much better person to the core than you believe- I was.

I saw season 1, and I think there was a season 2, it's been a while since that was on. I had forgotten about it, actually.

Hey Mikey ?

I wonder if it woulda been any different had someone handed you some of the books I read just before I made my final break from the public education system.

The Stainless Steel Rat, Enders Game, 1984 (And I had a far different perception of O'brien than most folk do), Homage to Catalonia, and Kropotkin's Mutual Aid.

I was in fact pretty well armed to do so when I made my break, but I wonder, if you were going to hand someone ONE book (non-religious), which might give them what they needed to break the chains, what would you suggest ?

Myself, I would select Alice Miller.
For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Roots of Violence

Any other suggestions ?
