Other than Citizen, I'm not sure who else out there is from the UK, but I was just curious as to the UK's reaction to Obama's gift to PM Gordon Brown of 25 DVD's. Especially after Brown gave him a desk item crafted from the timbers of a historic ship (the sister ship of the one who's wood was used in the making of the desk that sits in the Oval Office) and a 1st edition, 7 volume bio of Winston Churchill.

I'm not harping, or trying to start a fight here. I've seen on the net that UK's press is a little irked, but was what the general reaction of the people?

My take on it is that a 25 DVD set of the great American films would be great for someone like me and you. But for a head of state? One not particularly known for being a film buff? I also wonder if Obama was thoughtful enough to buy the Region 2 DVD's? One bad mark for the DVD's, two if they won't even work for the guy when he gets them home.

As I understand it they were region 1 format so they wouldn't work in the UK, but it really doesn't matter because PM Brown is almost blind.

My take on it is that it was a bone-headed move. Of course, it really should be noted that it's very unlikely that Obama himself went out and found the gift - there's a staff or person in charge of the protocol for things like this, and that person thought DVDs were the perfect gift.

I get the sneaking suspicion that that person is also now looking for a new job. :)

But yeah, it's egg on Obama's face, because he is the face of the Administration. As President, the buck stops with him - if he's going to get the credit for the good stuff, he's got to take the blame for the bad.

I'll toss in my 2 cents. If the DVDs were at least Region 2, then I applaud 'someone' in the White House for at least having that much common sense. That shows that Obama didn't indeed send one of his 1200 staffers / interns( yeah, that's about how many the President has working for him these days ) down to Wal-Mart or Target to pick up a box set. But if anyone WAS that smart to think to buy the proper DVD type, then that shows some thought went into the buying of the gift. And if a 25 DVD box set is the result of so much 'thought', then that alone raises more questions.

It simply doesn't look good, any way you spin it.

As I understand it, Brown hasn't had the best of "luck" inthe gifts he receives from US Presidents. Bush gave him a fur-lined (maybe wool? I dunno) leather flight jacket. Which is nice, but still. The guy doesn't normally wear that type of thing.

You'd think a little more research would be done as to a person's likes or dislikes on this level of diplomacy, dontcha think? The guy is almost blind and you give him movies? I didn't know about Brown's sight, so that just makes me scratch my head even more.

Agreed. At its best, it looks bone-headed. At its worst, it looks like you just ran down to the Stab-n-Grab and picked up something very last-minute, like a box of laundry detergent, and then gift-wrapped it and tried to pass it off.

Comedy Central is suppose to make you laugh. Presidents giving important allies a box of DVDs isn't suppose to be funny.

You ever stop to think it was a calculated snub cloaked in the deniability of incompetence?

Cause that was my first thought from the moment they did it - it's TOO boneheaded to have been accidental, and all but dripping Bidens trademark of obfuscating "stupidity" that is in fact no such thing.

And sure, you might not buy that now...

But would you care to make a wager with me, whether or not Brown gets a fruitcake for xmas ?

Okay, what (else) did I miss? I agree - given that Obama is the Second Coming of erudition and charm, it does seem almost perfectly boneheaded. But when did it become the new administration's objective to snub our friends across the pond?

It was like that when we got here!

Too bad this F-up didn't severe all relations with the Divided Nazi Commie Kingdom HQ of NWO Inc.

Remember that the British Empire burned down Washington DC and fought several wars against USA, armed Commie Russia and Nazi Germany, then got Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor. Plus USS Liberty and 9.11, since Israel has always been a British colony under the Balfour Agreement.

We also targeted PirateNews's Teddy Bear, Mr Funny Tickle, for assassination through our Commie-Nazi-Alien-Jew-Transformer puppet NWO-Illuminate network controlling the NIFTY-SHIFTY-CIA-UBERHAUSVERWALTER Doop-de-doop-de-doo, so it's not all bad.

While I can see the humor in W butchering the English language, ( much like giving a dog a spoon full of peanut butter ) the 'jokes' now in the White House are just sad.

I mean honestly, it's gotta feel a bit like waiting for all those yrs for the Star Wars prequels, expecting something great. But then, instead of the epic you'd dreamed since you were in High School, you're faced w/ The Phantom Menace, and left wondering... " where did it go so terribly wrong ? "

Yeah, but he still LOOKS cool.
