Chysler declares self bankrupt

America's third largest car manufacturer, Chrysler, has declared itself bankrupt after a handful of creditors withstood pressure from the Obama administration to forgive billions of dollars in debt, casting a cloud of uncertainty over tens of thousands of jobs at factories, suppliers and dealers.

After round-the-clock negotiations broke down, the 83-year-old Detroit carmaker said it was putting its future in the hands of the courts despite an 11th-hour deal with Italy's Fiat to pool technology in building new vehicles.

Both the White House and Chrysler expressed hope for a "surgical" bankruptcy lasting 30 to 60 days, clearing the company's liabilities and allowing it to emerge in healthy shape. But legal experts questioned whether this will be achievable and factory workers expressed fear for their jobs.

Speaking in the foyer of the White House, President Barack Obama made clear his anger towards the hold-outs: "While many stakeholders made sacrifices and worked constructively, I have to tell you that some did not. A group of hedge funds and investment funds decided to hold out for an unjustified taxpayer bailout."

He said it was "unacceptable" for a "small group of speculators" to endanger Chrysler's future. But he expressed optimism that Chrysler, which makes brands including Jeep and Dodge, can be restructured through a bankruptcy filing: "This is not a sign of weakness but rather one more step on a clearly chartered path towards Chrysler's revival."

Chrysler employs 54,000 people but tens of thousands more work for parts companies and in motor dealerships which depend on the firm for business. About 115,000 retired Chrysler workers depend on the company for healthcare and benefits.

Personally I think it's MUCH MORE important to talk about whether Obama is a narcissist. Don't you?

Hey, Signy, I see that CNN is coming out with its list of "100 Most Influential People" this weekend. I bet Barney Frank is # 1 and Chris Dodd close behind. What do you think? Are they still the most influential people in the world?

Interesting "fact" there. Last time I looked, Honda wasn't offering any discounts or rebates on their Fit, Civic, or Element lineup - their smallest cars. Neither was Toyota offering any cut-rate deals on their Scion brand of small cars or on the Yaris, Prius, or Corolla small cars. They WERE offering huge discounts - up to $18,000 off - on their Tundra full-size pick-up and Sequoia large SUV.

A look across the street at the Chrysler/Dodge dealership shows them offering discounts of up to $15,000 on full-size Ram pick-ups and Pacifica and Durango SUVs. There's no more waiting list for the Challenger, Charger, and Chrysler 300, and they're being offered with significant discounts and rebates, too.

Apparently, small cars are the next big thing.

I guess GM is trying to sell or shutter its Hummer brand because of great sales, right?

Says you. I think a couple of them are kinda cute. The new Xb looks like hammered ass, but the first-generation Xb was awesome. Zippy and fun to drive, and very well designed.

None. They're not offering cut-rate deals, because they don't need to. Sales are brisk. Thank last year's $5-a-gallon gas for that. By the way, the Ford F-150 is no longer the best-selling vehicle. It fell off its pedestal last year.

Ihh... I've never been that impressed with 'em. 425 SAE gross horsepower from 6.7 liters sounds like a lot, if you're used to inefficient, low-performance cast iron pushrod lumps like the Hemi. I prefer something with a bit more oomph for its size. Hell, Honda's S2000 pulls 240hp out of 2.0 liters, on pump gas and with low emissions. If a Hemi could pull numbers like that, it would be putting out around 750hp in stock form. REAL MEN know that the fun starts above 6000-8000rpm, where no Hemi would dare to tread.

Your Hemi might be great in a straight line or a quarter-mile, but last time I looked, my commute was more than a quarter mile long, and involved lots of twists and turns. 'Course, the Hemi *will* pass just about everything on the road - except a gas pump, of course...

Yanno Mikey, were we to ever both have the time and money (fat chance, that) one of the first things I'd wanna do is refit an AMC Gremlin X and have at it against one of your CRX's out in the west virgina backwoods.

GINOBIFFARONI

One thing, I always thought Dodge did well was their minivans...

I have an 03 Grand Caravan, and have gotten a ton of use out of it, it was far better than the Ford or GM models, and the Toyota while very nice too, was a bit smaller and more expensive to buy at the time.

Now, based in this success ( they are every where out there ) why would Dodge help introduce competition in this market ?

http://minivans.about.com/od/manufacturer/a/09VWminivan.htm

" As part of an agreement with The Chrysler Group, Volkswagen will be producing a minivan based on the 2008 Dodge/Chrysler minivan platform. This new minivan -- called the Routan -- should hit VW dealer showrooms in the Fall of 2008 as a 2009 model. "

I might just be looking at one of these when it is time to replace my G.Caravan, particularly if they come out with a diesel version in a few years.

But why are they helping a competitor come out with an improved version of a product line that has been a success for them ?

Keep the Shiny side up

So now Chrysler joins GM in being owned by a UAW-US Government 'partnership'.

Wanna bet that Ford doesn't get very many vehicle sales to the government over the next few years; and that environmental, safety, and labor regulations get enforced a bit more stringently on Ford?

Corporatism.

Gino:

I'm with ya on the ChryCo minivans. They really are quite good. By most accounts, the Honda Odyssey is better, but it is QUITE pricey. We had a Caravan short-wheelbase model at my old job, that we used for deliveries. I drove the hell out of that thing, and it wasn't bad at all. Never broke down, never stranded me, and gave good performance and decent mileage.

As to why ChryCo would build them for someone else... Money? Their sales have been flagging, including minivans, and VW's are rising. Also, VW is trying to more fully flesh out their lineup, and the Vanagon/VanWagon thing really IS primitive.

ChryCo also inked a deal to build the next-generation Nissan Titan full-size pick-up. It is (or was, anyway) to be based on the new Dodge Ram full-size. Nissan is trying to save money, pure and simple. Their Titan is a damned neat truck, and I think they're making a huge mistake jobbing it out to Dodge. Time will tell whether this plan even goes through, though.

Sorry, Mike. Gotta to with whozit on this one (much as it irks me). I actually like small cars as a rule, but I'm pretty sure the new edition of Webster's just shows a picture of the Scion under the definition of "ugly".
