Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

If you adjust the figures for the amount that US GDP has changed over the years you get (approximately) Reagan travelling at 250mph, FDR travelling at 720mph... (US GDP having increased 5x since 1980 and 18x since 1933)

Heads should roll

That doesn't make any sense though. Growth of GDP isn't the same as national debt. Growing GDP would be considered a good thing.

Unless inflation were outstripping growth.

See, now you're completely changing the entire point of the discussion.

Where others were bad, Obama is worse.

While it's true I have absolutely no love for Obama, what's happening at the moment can't be considered his fault 'only'.

There's plenty of blame to go around for the mess we're in, starting with 'I voted FOR waterboarding before I voted AGAINST it' Pelosi.

Truth is, HObamaman couldn't get all this money without Congress.

I will say that his 'plan', so far, is the biggest loser...hey, maybe they can add that to the 'White House Television' lineup, heee!

I adjusted for changes in GDP to get borrowing as a percentage of national income - excessive/reckless borrowing (what you are accusing obama of) has to be defined in this way. You know, you borrow against your income, your ability to pay the money back, etc.

I actually did the maths wrong for Reagan btw -the 1980 US GDP is only about 2x smaller, which put Reagan at about 110mph.

Here are some Obama critics with better maths for you:

Public debt as a Percentage of GDP - In this case the 'speed' of each president is the steepness of slope on the graph.

-Debt-Levels-Not-Seen-Since-World-War-II.aspx

And this graph factors in better the costs of the financial crisis which obama has inherited - Obama increasing debt by 26.3% of GDP over ten years, compared to about 16% for Reagan:

I'm curious, though - according to the graph, at the end of WWII, in the 1945-46 area, publicly held debt peaked at over 108%. Strangely, though, this is also remembered as the beginning of America's rise to supremacy as a superpower, a time when our economy was unrivaled in the world.

Conversely, during some of the LOWEST periods on the graph, around 1974-1980, when our publicly held debt was among the lowest, people seem to remember that the economy just flat sucked in this country.

Moreover, if you look back at history's (and conservatives') version of things, the nation was going to hell through the 60s - when public debt was going down! Also, you'll notice a rise under Reagan, when the economy climbed out of its post-Nixonian hole, and another "bubble" high point during Clinton's tenure - again, when the economy was "booming".

So is there a correlation between how much a government is spending and how well its economy is doing in relation to that spending? Because the graph seems to show that there is, only it's not the correlation you might expect... Seems that when public debt is at its highest, our economy is going strongest.

If anything, isn't this an incentive to INCREASE the public debt?

Just something to ponder...

Hey Kwicko, you bring up an interesting point. The correlation you speak of is downright fascinating. The gloom-and-doomers hating on Obama have to take a closer look before slinging their arrows.

Seems to me that we are coming out of it slowly but surely. Jury's still out folks. And for those kiddies who haven't been paying attention, this mess did not begin Jan. 20, 2009. Someone was asleep at the wheel in the 8 years prior to Obama taking the oath of office some 123 days ago.

In addition, both houses have to take a bow as well for allowing this mess to get out of control.
That's both houses and both parties. Remember Bush and Company doled out the first handouts (not bailouts) to the Wall Street White Collar Bandits. Come get some, one and all. Get your free money right here, no waiting. Bonuses? Sure why not go ahead. Plenty more where that come from!

Yup. On this Memorial Day weekend, when we're reminded that all gave some, and some gave all, we should also remember the bailouts for Wall Street, where all got some, and some got all.

Correctomundo! He didn't start the fire.

He's just the face of what's going on currently, just as Bush Jr. was the last 8 years. We'd probably pity the both of them if we were omnipotent and saw just how little both of those men knew about the choices they've made and the actions they've taken.

He was supposed to be the face of change though. His campaign, like most, was nothing but blatant lies and empty promises.

Or the biggest winner. It all depends on what you view the intention of Government in he first place. Methinks there are a lot of people on high in their ivory towers who are very pleased with the way things have gone the first 100+ days of this presidency.

You think the recent plunge in value of the US Dollar was an unintended (or unimagined) side effect of Obama's medicine?

I know for a fact that gun and ammunition manufacturers and dealers are LOVING the way things have gone since Election Day.

They say they're "worried", but that hasn't slowed down their sales at all - in fact, sales are through the roof.

So there's at least one unintended area where Obama's stimulus seems to be working quite well.
