Might as well go out with a bang and make people miss ya. Am I wrong?

But I thought everyone wanted a Hemi? How can carmakers who offer mostly big cars, trucks, and SUVs powered by BIG engines be going out of business?

Just when they start selling a proper car (albeit a rebadged Aussie ass-hauler) they kill the brand.

Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

A Hemi, is commonly considered a Mopar (Dodge/Chrysler) designation, not a Pontiac term.

Pontiac sold 4 and 6 cylinder cars (the G5 and G6) but the only cars they had that weren't rebadged Chevys or Toyota's, were the Holden built, V8 powered, rear wheel drive G8 sedan and the cancelled GTO coupe.

Both were awesome performance cars, but it was either a case of "too little, too late", or more likely the "wrong product at the wrong time!"

It's a shame GM's most iconic brand died in such a sad way! It's a bigger shame GM was trailing everyone else in innovation (light hybrid cars and SUVs and E-85 Flex fuel engines?), while Toyota, Honda and even Ford are industry leaders in hybrids!
The new Ford Fusion Hybrid is a critical hit in the automotive press!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Oh, I know; that's kind of an "inside joke" between WhoZit and I. He tends to refer to any V8 as a "Hemi". And in truth, there's something to that. I can't think of an automobile engine made today that doesn't have a semi-hemispherical combustion chamber cross section, which is what gave Mopar's Hemi its name. The most iconic of the Hemis were the 426-cubic-inch displacement models, which puffed out 425 horsepower (SAE gross), which really seemed like something at the time. Of course, nowadays, a decently designed performance engine will pump out 100hp per liter, so a half-decent Hemi of 426 cubes should be belting out closer to 650 horsepower without the benefit of turbochargers or supercharger.

Yup. Too bad they didn't get to develop a Firebird alongside the new Camaro. I always liked the first-gen Firebirds much more than their Camaro counterparts.

Sounds like typical GM strategy, really.

I won't shed too many tears over the loss of the Pontiac brand. There were some pretty decent Studebaker and AMC cars once upon a time, too, but nobody seems too broken up over their demise.
