By the way, it seems American car buyers hate America. The Dodge Challenger and the Chevy Camaro both make much more power than the Mustang GT. Oddly, Ford is the only one of the Big Three that isn't in bankruptcy.

So much for horsepower.

Sorry, but I was raised on European and Japanese cars. There are VERY few American cars that I ever got excited about. A '67 Mustang fastback with a 390 V8 and a 4-speed transmission is sex on wheels. A Corvette Z06 ain't bad either. Firebirds, Camaros, Trans Ams, Z28s, 5.0 'Stangs... none of those ever did a thing for me.

Stage 1 GS 455 made a measly 360hp. That's not really "great" for a muscle car. Heck, a Hyundai makes 306 now. And the new Mustang GT makes 360hp out of a little 4.6-liter V8.

I know it seemed like a lot of power back then, but that's only because of the car's shitty handling and horrible brakes. I speak from experience - I rode with a high school buddy when he went to test drive a GS 455. Got off the lot, he gunned it, tried to turn a corner, and plowed straight into a parked car. I got out and walked.

My favorite Buick was the boat-tail Riviera. I had a '73 - sadly, it did not have the Stage 1 option, just a "regular" old 455 wiht a single four-barrel carb. Either way, it was more than enough power for the car. It wasn't a good-handling car, either, but it was pretty enough that you didn't really care...

Especially if they offer it in a V model. And yes, that's a Cadillac station wagon, only they get pissed at you if you call it that. I've always had a soft spot for wagons. They make the most automotive sense to me. Handling of a decent sports sedan when they're done right, and more usable space than most SUVs, since they aren't eaten up with body-on-frame inefficiencies of space utilization.

And the CTS Sportwagon is a sexy beast, in its way. If they offer a CTS-V model like they do with the sedan, you'd have one badass motherfucker of a wagon. For the uninitiated, the V gets the engine from the Corvette Z06, except they go ahead and add a supercharger, since 504 horsepower isn't seen as "enough". So it makes 560hp. In a Cadillac. With a 6-speed manual transmission, no less.

And to think, a few years ago when Cadillac announced that they were going racing, no one laughed louder or harder than I did. I opined that their drivers should have graphics of old-lady-style blue hair on their helmets, and the cars should be equipped with a left blinker that stays on for the entire race.

Well, they didn't win any races, but they made some headway, and they got some attention for their "art+science" design language, which has now reached full maturity with the latest CTS model. It's not a classically pretty car, but it is striking. It's no Aston Martin Rapide, but it's more recognizable than a Lexus or Mercedes-Benz.
