DREAMTROVE

I'm just curious. I've gotten into some arguments, and once again, I don't know where sentiment falls.

1. Ahmadinejad. Is he a mad jew-hater who is out to destroy israel, or is he a strictly defensive player, keeping his country out of a possibly nuclear war?

2. The Islamic Republic. Is it an oppressive dictatorship that we should overthrow or just a different way of doing things and we should mind our own business?

3. Iran. Is the overall plan of self-sufficiency a plausible economic goal? Or is this the making of a new Nazi Germany, and the only solution is to pull Iran back into the Global economy?

4. Nukes. Is it about power, so they can sell the oil and not burn it, about having a bomb so we won't invade, or do they plan to nuke someone, or bully people with nukes?

5. Any thoughts outside the little boxes above? I just summarized those as the majority opinions that I hear. there's no right or wrong answer.

There are Iranians here, and there are in CA near my brother, and we're hearing totally different things both from Iranians and others. Just looking for a sentiment collection

Ps. Anyone see the thing on the sentiment aggregator proving twice as accurate at intelligence information as the CIA?

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

I saw something like this featured on the Daily show - experts are quizzed for their views of the facts on the ground, and these are entered as parameters into equations, the output of which gives a prediction of how the situation will progress.

Was this the same as your one? Got any links?

Heads should roll

Neither. He's trying to secure his country's position as the dominant power in the region, and he's using nuclear force (or the fear of nuclear force) to do so. The jew-bashing is more for the public's consumption. The funding/arming of insurgents in Iraq is a means of 1.) keeping US mideast focus on Iraq and 2.) Keeping Iraq from becoming a strong, stable, American-friendly power in the region.

Iranian nationalisn trumps Iranian animosity for the current regime. Any direct military action by the US would cause a backlash by the populace, who would see it as an attack on thier country, rather than an attack on the leadership. We missed a hell of a chance during the recent uprising, however.

Let them try for self-sufficiency. They will fail. Again, any kinda of forced entry into ANYTHING would be more trouble than it's worth.

Power. but not the kind you mentioned.

No sane person actually thinks that Iran would be dumb enough to use/sell a nuclear weapon, when they know it would be traced to them. They do, however, make a hell of a bargaining chip.

Picture it like this: You have a guy with a gun. There are one, maybe two bullets in the gun. He is surrounded by 15 guys with machine guns, but who don't want to shoot first because then they look like assholes in front of their girlfriends. This guy knows that, should he ever actually fire a shot, he's fucked six ways to Sunday. But he also knows how reluctant everyone else is to just shoot him and get it over with. So he can negotiate, using the threat of a gun he will never fire.

Now, North Korea is the same way. but nobody really gives a shit about North Korea because, for all their talk, they don't have anything we really want (apart from an occasional SIGINT collection ship and a couple of whiny journo's). The difference with Iran is they have oil. And the 15 guys with machine guns need oil. So some of those 15 guys will have to make some kind of deal with Iran, because they need the oil. But now, they can't just dictate terms to Iran, 'cause Iran has a gun.

Personally, I'm hoping the IAF takes care of the whole nuke thing for us.

Mercy is the mark of a great man.
Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

Twice o nothin is still nothin.

Too busy pissing on and abusing their supposed protectees to bother, I guess - they've been phoning in whatever the politically convenient "assessment" is since they were founded, it's a wonder anyone believes em at all.

Any military action by Israel or the US against Iran would be disasterous. We could immediately see gas prices rocket up to $8-$20/gallon which would just about be the death knell for American business and industry, and our economic way of life.

Regardless of how it happened, and regardless of the debateable ethics, it's a worthy effort by this Admin. to negotiate with Iran.

To submit an intelligent answer we would need the facts. So here goes a lamen's view of what's going on:

1. "DinnerJacket" is crazy like a fox. For all his bluster he seems to have a goal in mind. To keep everyone guessing as to what he'll do next.
It's like a relief pitcher in baseball; he throws the first pitch wildly several feet over the head of the batter. He gets his, and everyone else's attention and the batter doesn't quite dig in to take a good swing at the next pitch.

2. Bring back the Shah of Iran, now there was a dictator. Oh, and we should mind our business, but with a mindful eye on.

3. Imagine, someone else in this world wants economic stability. I don't think the people of Iran would allow their so-called government to lead them into that type of nationalism.

4. It doesn't seem to me that they have the capability to make a nuke bomb. If so, I don't think they would actually use it. It's the Big Stick theory.

5. Thoughts!? Yep. I watched with some interest the protests carried on by the people of Iran when that woman was shot. It showed me something about the power that the people have. Before then the perception was, at least for me, that everyone in Iran hated the American way of life. But here you have people fighting for their rights, sounds American to me.

I'm just saying.

thanks, good level headed analyses, I'm staying silent on the topic so as to just listen to ideas of other folks. If there's a big question I missed, go ahead and post it.

Here's one I'm wondering: Are we trying to spread the chaos in Afgh, Pak, to Iran? and will they respond? If so, how? and will it be justified?
