Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I watched "Hidalgo" recently, so this one caught my eye. Thirty million dollars for refuges for the horses they move...one woman remarked that rather than moving them East, maybe they should think about moving the commercial ranching and farming somewhere else...made me wonder...?

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Horses sure are pretty. However, they're not native to the Americas, having been brought here from Europe from the 16th century on. The 'wild' horses are ones that escaped or were released, so they don't actually have 'native' habitat here. They're less native in the U.S. than humans. They have few natural predators, so tend to breed until they overfill their range, eating the food that real native species such as prong-horn antelope and mule deer need to survive. There aren't enough folks interested in owning a wild horse to adopt them all. The alternative to relocation is culling, so maybe moving them somewhere they can live isn't a bad thing.
