"Um, Guys, Taxes Are Lower This Year"

It's their biggest battle cry: "Taxed Enough Already", and all the people who give those speeches and incite anger over taxation refuse to face the facts. What a sad bunch of people inhabit our country. These guys should be thanking Obama (at least for now), but no, he's the Great Evil One and he's RAISED our taxes. Bullfeathers:
Quote:

Believe it or not, tea partiers, your taxes probably went down this year. Soon after Barack Obama took office, those tax-and-spend Democrats cut individuals’ federal taxes by roughly $173 billion, the AP reports, which should more than make up for any tax increases states were forced to push through to make up for mortgage crisis budget shortfalls.

“The fact is, in the past year we have had more tax cuts than almost any time in our nation’s history,” said one Democratic congressman. But “people don’t realize because of the false rhetoric” from conservatives. But Republican complaints aren’t totally baseless; the Bush tax cuts will expire in January, and some tax increases were included in the health care legislation, meaning taxes will be heftier in the future.

http://www.newser.com/story/86110/um-guys-taxes-are-lower-this-year.ht
ml

They're against government intrusion; but government intrusion into the lives of AMERICAN CITIZENS, and their possible jailing for months, doesn't bother them. Even Mark Rubio, running for Senate as a Republican in Florida, calls the new law akin to a “police state.” There’s never been a World War II movie that didn’t include the line "show me your papers." It’s their catchphrase. Every time someone says "show me your papers," Hitler’s family gets a residual check. So heads up, Arizona; that’s fascism. I know, I know, it’s a dry fascism, but it’s still fascism." http://waynedems.blogspot.com/search/label/Tea%20Party%20Hypocrisy

There doesn't seem to be any policy basis behind the Tea Party movement, when you come right down to it:

They're against taxes, and have been convinced Obama has raised them; but that doesn't stop the belief or the battle cry.

They "demand" smaller government; but even HINT their Social Security or Medicare might be touched, and they'll cut your throat. The Arizona law is "smaller" government??

They say they're a mixed group with no ties to the GOP, including independents and even some Democrats; yet their materials are paid for by the Republican Party. ( http://www.waynedemocrats.org/tea-party-hypocrisy/index.php)

They say they're scared Obama's going to take their guns away, yet in just one year, Barack Obama has signed into law more repeals of federal gun policies than in President George W. Bush’s eight years in officem from the repeal of Reagan Era rules keeping loaded guns out of national parks to the repeal of post-9/11 policies to safeguard Amtrak from armed terrorist attacks.

They mock Obama's use of teleprompters, but have no problem with Palin scribbling on her hand, nor with Mitt Romney, Dick Armey, Liz and Dick Cheney, Jim DeMint using them. Or Marco Rubio, the favorite to win the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida, mocking President Obama's use of TelePrompters...while standing in front of a TelePrompter of his own.

There's more, but that's sufficient to ask: hypocrisy anyone?

I agree about the immigration law, though I add it's not fascism. You should check out the recent "State Corporatism" thread for that. What it IS is authoritarianism, and I'm always against that.

I don't really care about hypocrisy. That doesn't necessarily make someone wrong.

Your main point here seems to be that because taxes have been lowered, they shouldn't have any issues.

The problem is a lack of understanding on their side. It's not actually taxes they should be making the loudest issue about, it's the size of the federal government. Taxes are only a minor subset of that; the government keeps getting bigger purely on credit and trading on our national debt, which is inherently unstable. Our GNP is nowhere near our national debt. Taxes aren't the biggest issue.

They also need to wake up about who's behind the tea party, because I can guarantee THEY aren't for a reduced government.

Wulf kind of has a point here. Why the fear? Tea par tiers ade actually neither an aberration nor scary, and not at all stupid from the ones I've met, And also firefly fans, so there's something. They have a political point of view and want to be heard, so they are exercising their first amendment right to peaceably assemble, just as their counterparts on the left have done for decades. Actually, the left should thank these guys because they will quite likely create a little more tolerance for demonstrating on the right, and maybe there will be less of the old taser and teargas approach from the top.

Byte, yes, you're right, technically the AZ law isn't fascism, butts on that particular slippery slope. On the tea party tax angle, some of them understand that better than we do, you should check out some of the tax analysis, I had no idea it was as complicated as it is, but it is. The more spending there is, not only the more debt and the more interest, but the more dilution of the dollar, and the more hops any money spent is going through, and the more hops it goes through, the more times it gets taxed, which is more important than the actual rate being charged.

The whole system is incredible regressive, the overtaxed goods that go through the most taxation are those consume by the poor. The high end expenses, such as investments, real estate, have lower tax, and the overseas transactions need not have any.

Temper tantrum? It's a temper tantrum to get a kick out of how the Tea Partiers are so confused and taken with their own complaints they don't recognize reality?

The only "temper tantrum" I've seen today is you grousing about my emoticons and hurling insults. Got to you, did I? You're not pissing me off, if that's your intent, you just make me laugh.

Ahhh, people with brains who can actually make valid point; how refreshing! Byte, no, my point is that on so many issues, what the Tea Party screaming about isn't valid...like the gun thing; and the fact taxes have been lowered is one of the best examples. It's about the whole thing, not just one issue. They seem to be completely clueless about whatever stand they grab onto and complain about.

You actually pinpointed what I was trying to say with "The problem is a lack of understanding on their side".

And
Quote:

They also need to wake up about who's behind the tea party, because I can guarantee THEY aren't for a reduced government
THAT's the worst of it! They're being lied to, strung along, riled up by FoxNoise and their like, to be angry about things that aren't what they should be angry about, and they'll most likely wake up to find they've been shills for just what they were arguing AGAINST!

Quote:

They have a political poinst of view and want to be heard
THAT I have no argument with; it's the freakish stuff and how they're "wagging the dog" of the Republican party, to the detriment of everyone in my opinion, that irritates me. They're over-the-topness isn't good for the country or our government, and that's a shame.

As to the tax angle, the joke to me is that they're blaming Obama for raising taxes, when in actuality he's lowered them significantly. Other things may happen in the future, but what logic is there in hollering and carrying signs about taxes being raised when they've been lowered? Among other things, it lessens their credibility.

And I don't think they understand the situation at ALL; I truly believe they swallow what they're told whole cloth, then act on it. If I thought they understood, and had any kind of reasonable argument to make, I wouldn't find them so funny.
Quote:

The whole system is incredible regressive, the overtaxed goods that go through the most taxation are those consume by the poor. The high end expenses, such as investments, real estate, have lower tax, and the overseas transactions need not have any.
Absofrigginlootely; now if they wanted to go against THAT, I'd be right there with them. But like most easily-led Americans, they believe their "day" will come someday, so they want lower taxes for the rich; or else they believe lower taxes for the rich will result in more and btter jobs, which is also false.

I actually agree with some of their premises, but the absolute blindness I see them exhibit leaves me with nothing but disdain, unfortunately. Like the idea of screaming that Obama will take away their guns when he's actually WEAKENED gun laws; that's a prime example to me of the fact that they listen to those who tell them what they want to hear and make little or no effort to discover if it's true or not...and in some cases (like right here), wouldn't believe the truth if it were proven to them.

That, I find pathetic.

The tea party is a mess as an organization. Iirc, It was created by Ron Paul originally as his own "big tent" movement. Since then, the GOP has been trying to use it to reel in libertarians to the republican party. Neither the tea party members nor the tea party itself can really be called a distinct set of political positions, it originally had republicans independents and democrats, libertarians, socialist and the Christian right, everyone who disapproved of the corruption of process and the direction of govt and wanted an increase in personal liberties and opposed globalism and the mainstream partisan positions.

In qnumbers, they seem to be tending more towards wulf than the rest of us, but unifying them in an argument would be like saying "new yorkers believe"

A friend of mine was describing a tea party rally to me, and said there was a really zen mix of people, who seemed to almost self seggregate during the rally. He said the Austrian school people made s lot of sense, and he stayed mostly with them, and the GOP party operatives danced from tent to tent trying to collect support, but in doing so, asked you to support things that the speakers were clearly against, yet the GOP clearly had the most money at the event and either the grope or fox was sponsoring it.

ETA: That should have read GOP, not grope.

Hello,

I think the Tea Partiers of yore would be quite content if you returned all the Social Security money they've invested, with interest, and closed out their accounts. Same for Medicare. If you returned their money and closed it all out, the old Tea Partiers would... Well... Have a party.

Unfortunately, the face of the Tea Party has changed a great deal since before the recent election. I almost feel like the Republican party has been allowed to buy out the Tea Party movement, infiltrating it at every level by using green monetary grease. It is most unfortunate. I'd love to be a Tea Partier, but they no longer quite resemble what I remember.

It used to be Tea Partiers were primarily Libertarian. Not anymore. I just don't recognize the movement nowadays.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

"Like the idea of screaming that Obama will take away their guns when he's actually WEAKENED gun laws"

Hello,

When I voted for Obama, I did so with the knowledge that my right to bear arms would be compromised by his administration. This was a heavy weight on my conscience. However, I felt it was important to shift the balance of power in this country. I felt it was important to send a message to the world that we were about things like hope and tolerance.

I also hoped that a subsequent Republican president would undo whatever damage the Obama administration did.

Imagine my surprise when, month after month, I see gun rights being strengthened all over the U.S. Imagine my further surprise when, with each successive victory, the Gun Rights Advocates become louder and more energetic about their issue. I can't quite figure it out.

I have a belief about what is happening, and it is unsupported by any evidence.

I believe that the Republicans aren't winning many battles, and so they are very loud about the battlegrounds where they are virtually unopposed by the administration. They can seem like they are scoring victories, even though there isn't any pressure coming against them from the top.

Meanwhile, I think the Democrats are quite content to let the Republicans fight their imaginary war over Gun Rights to a successful conclusion, because while all that is occurring, they are focusing their attention on other areas that are important to them.

This feels true to me, and it feels extraordinarily apparent. Unfortunately, I have no actual evidence to back up my beliefs.

I also suspect that the Obama administration has a second-term plan to deal with the gun issue, and I suspect it's a plan that the Republicans are not expecting and are unprepared for. I think the administration is clever enough for an 'out of left field' solution to the problem.

In any event, I have lost a great deal of faith in Obama, since he has done little to assure that the civil rights abuses of the past are not repeated. I'd have liked to see the individuals and corporations who violated human rights on orders from the government be severely punished. We learned this was the way to deal with the issue after WWII.

I am also severely disappointed in the new Health Care plan. As a Libertarian, I opposed government mandated health care. But as a human being, I understood the potential benefit and boon to everyone if every sick man and woman, poor or rich, could rely on being treated regardless of their situation or problem. Unfortunately, the new Health Care plan seems like a profit guarantee for Insurance companies. If they were going to do this thing, there needed to be a government-run public option at no cost. I'm flabbergasted at what was delivered in its stead.

I'm just confused and disappointed all over. Nothing is what I thought it would be, and nothing is operating in a logical fashion.

Thank you, Anthony. It only widened my eyes for a fraction of a second, because it's somewhat more ugly than he usually gets, but only slightly. Besides, he may "appall" you, but YOU "charis" ME. You're so even-handed, civil and sensible...would that we could clone you here...sigh...

Interestingly, "When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it" PRECISELY describes Dumbya and his cronies, and his administration. I'm not at all sure to what he thought he was referring, but it fits that better than anything else I can think of.

No. Sorry, but it HASN'T occurred to me, because Ron Paul is running away from them, too. And he's getting more support and being taken more seriously all the time.

And I can't believe that, with all the Ron Paul supporters here, *I* have to be the one to mention it, but did no one else even NOTICE that Bernie Sanders's version of Ron Paul's "Audit the Fed" amendment was passed in the Senate with a 96-0 vote?

Is there no one else here who sees that as at least SOME kind of positive sign?

I'm not one to stick up for Rappy, but that was a joke. It was based on the old Chevy Chase/ Jane Curtin Saturday Night Live Weekend Update bits, which were themselves based on the old Point/Counterpoint bits. Jane would make a very salient point, and Chevy would counter with "Jane, you ignorant slut..." and then go off on a rant that basically had nothing to do with anything.

Hello,

I heard about this.

Have you ever seen the 13th Warrior?

There is a scene in the movie where a youth is standing at the prow of a boat. He is waiting to be acknowledged.

The Arab in the movie asks (I paraphrase) "What's the deal with the kid on the boat?"

His translator responds, "The boy is letting them see him."

The Arab is incredulous, "See him?! He's standing right out in the open."

"Yes," the translator replies, "but he is giving them time to decide if he is real. Something to do with the mists..."

This scene sums up my opinion on the progress on auditing the Fed. (And forgive me for using a movie to illustrate my opinion. I know such practices have a soiled history here.) But essentially, I am staring at it, watching silently, to see if it is real.

I'm kinda right there with ya, Anthony.

I still keep hearing how Obama is going to grab our guns, and it strikes me that these dolts who are repeating this gibberish are so freaking ignorant that they probably SHOULDN'T be allowed to have firearms. Or even sharp objects. (I'm lookin' at you, Wulfie!). And yet, Obama still resolutely refuses to go a-gun-grabbin'.

Same thing with taxes. Hell, look up above - you have PN making pretty much the exact claims Rappy's been making. Rappy's been going on since pretty much day one that Obama has raised taxes, and no amount of proof otherwise will dissuade him. Now PN is claiming that Obama has spent more money than every other President combined, a claim that is just appallingly ridiculous at every conceivable level. Has Obama spent more this year than Bush's fiscal budget for last year? Yup. And that's saying something, because that Bush budget was a whopping 1.2 trillion dollars - and that didn't even include his war funding!

I still wish Obama would show up to the gun rallies and just grab the mic and say, "Gun enthusiasts, YOU'RE WELCOME!"

Auraptor, this is appalling. I am trying to put into words how bad it is, and I'm having trouble. It undermines any potential respect you might have earned on multiple levels. It is juvenile and sexist, for one. I just don't understand how anyone can think this is a proper method of discourse.

Not a fan of classic SNL, I see.

Actually, I started w/ a line from Dan Akroyd, and finished with how Chevy Chase use to close his "news" cast.

You're right - it WAS Aykroyd that said that! I was remembering it as Chevy Chase, which was wrong. My bad.

Is there no one else here who sees that as at least SOME kind of positive sign?"

I'm with ya again, T. I keep waiting for the other foot to drop, or the rug to be yanked out from under us. Granted, the Sanders amendment isn't as strong as the House bill that Dr. Paul introduced (which ALSO passed), but it's not nothing.

Trick is, it's an amendment, not its own stand-alone bill. The bill it's attached to has to pass, and that's not a sure thing at this point.

Then it would have to be reconciled with the House version.

But still, it's the first time in history, so far as I recall, that such a step has been suggested or undertaken.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

And though Ron Paul will never get the credit he's due, he damned well should.

Yup, I'm sure. It was the way it was phrased. No doubt.

DREAMTROVE

Rap, that was perty funny, people are punchy here tonight,

Oh, the Bernie sanders thing, he spams me all the time and has since I sent him a detailed overview of the neocons Iran first strike nuclear plan, a little lite treason for the same of the human race and any other species in the strike zone.

Anthony,

Yes, all of what you say is true, but you must realize that those people who were in the tea party movement, a large number of them are still there, they are now just outnumbered by palinistas and various other groups, but thats what you get with a big tent.

As for gun laws, alas, I'm afraid that support for firm arms is coming from Hillary Clinton or someone very much like her who wants either armed rebellion against the administration, or for someone to assassinate the president.

At the moment, I have my govt healthcare through which i can get no health care, do people realize that there are times when throwing money at the problem is like throwing gasoline on the fire? A medical opinion from a knighted doctor costs a couple grand now, and without it, you can do nothing, with it, you can do very close to nothing because it probably wont be an accurate diagnosis. Now we have overpriced sub stone age care, at a price way past going to mars and back. A little sanity would be nice. Meanwhile, yeah, we will wait and see about the fed, it would be nice to see progress, but i expect to see a bait and switch operation like the "reforms" that followed the panic of 1907...

That'd be the small arms treaty, right along with ACTA which makes the DMCA look like being showered in rose petals by comparison, and that's Biden, got his fingerprints all over it, from the impressively and near-effective secrecy, to using the treaty provisions of the US Constitution to end run and undermine the leglislative process.

Not real happy about that, and been pouring sand in the gears all along, but most folk don't even *KNOW* about it - classic Biden obfuscation.

That is because you are a sane and basically decent fellow, Anthony - and therefore trying to apply the wrong logic TO it.

As I have pointed out before, just because greedy sociopaths, much like crabs, all move in the same direction in response to the same stimuli, doesn't make em a hive mind, doesn't make em some great, grand conspiracy, but it can look like that from an external viewpoint, sure.

Once you understand the inhuman logic loops that govern their actions, it all makes perfect sense, and the answer to it is removing the machinery of government from their hands, but again, the problem of our political system enters cause it makes no sense to yank it out of the hands of one group of sociopaths only to hand it to another, you see...

And therefore the better method is to remove it entire, and what is the machinery of government but people - this is where the weathermen and their hopes of bombing the physical structure without harming people failed, due to not understanding that principle - without people willing to listen to them, without people willing to take and execute their orders, these shitheads are powerless.

It isn't the tyrants like Stalin and so many others that cause the death of millions, it's all the damn fools "just following orders" who carry them out from fear, ignorance, intolerance and hatred of anything not like them.

Is is THOSE people, who are the most responsible.
And those responsible, will be held accountable.
One way or another.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I apologize as well, Raptor, for the same reason Anthony did. I haven't watched SNL for years and years, ever since the "real" cast left, and I've forgotten most of what I saw back then (except "Land Shark!" That's unforgettable, even for me!).

I took it seriously, and now understand how it was meant. I admit, as I wrote, I WAS somewhat surprised, as you've never gotten quite that nasty, which should have made me wonder. I'm glad you only meant it in jest.
