Sunday morning, Ronnie James Dio passed away after a battle with stomach cancer.

I didn't care much for his work as replacement frontman for Black Sabbath, but I liked his earlier work with Ritchie Blackmoor's Rainbow, and some of his stuff with his own band, Dio. Dude could belt out some metal.

I'll be listening to Rainbow's "Rising" LP at work today, remembering the first time I ever heard Dio back in '76. He'll be missed.

I beg to differ. Exhibit A:

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

HK: I just wasn't impressed with Dio's Sabbath output. Sorry.

And it's ironic, because by the time Dio stepped in to replace an ousted Ozzy Osbourne, I didn't care for Ozzy's work with Sabbath anymore, either. It just felt the whole band had run out of steam; at least it sounded that way TO ME.

So, while Dio re-energized Sabbath to a degree, and was a definite improvement over Ozzy's lackluster work on albums like "Never Say Die" and the like, I just never felt like Dio *fit* with Sabbath. And Ozzy came out far more revitalized with his own solo projects, at least as long as he had Randy Rhoades beside him on guitar.

And yes, I own Heaven and Hell and The Mob Rules on vinyl. But I've never felt the urge to buy them on CD or download them from iTunes. I've done both with Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. :)

Maybe I'm a snob when it comes to Sabbath; maybe I'm just too old and stuck in my ways. For me, Sabbath means Ozzy, and Dio belongs with Rainbow (instead of that douchey "Stone Cold" putz they replaced him with!), or on his own with stuff like "Holy Diver". I felt like his Sabbath days were somewhat beneath him, in that he was fully capable of fronting his own (better) band, and him being with Sabbath felt like he was trying to fill Ozzy's shoes, which is just an impossible task in the first place.
