Gob Bless David Simon and HBO. It took me a few eps to get into it but now that I am I'm scrounging the HBO site for more. HBO gives shows and characters time - essential for a great show to be great. I can't wait to find out more about all of these characters, even the ones I don't care for all that much. The last 3 eps have been must re-watch episodes.

Anyone else watching?

I'm not, but am eagerly awaiting its DVD release. I've loved everything they've been involved with so far, at least what I've seen ("The Corner" and "The Wire"). I haven't seen Generation Kill yet, but will buy it if it's on sale cheap enough.

And I really need to get the complete Homicide: Life On The Street, too.

Imma wait for The Wire to come down in price - but imma skip Homicide, since having seen it in "realtime" (pun intended) the TV version glosses over a lot of dirty biz that The Wire doesn't.

Funny thing, they had to stop filming Homicide in Baltimore cause it was too dangerous, heh.

Frem: I've seen The Wire as low as $65 for the full five seasons, but that's as low as I've ever seen it. I paid $135 for it, and have never felt like I got ripped off at that price. Hell, I've already watched the whole thing all the way through at least three times, and loaned it out to a handful of people besides. Every single one of them has had the same reaction I had, a kind of stunned look on their face, like they've been drained of emotion. And they all said the same thing: "That wasn't just some of the best TV I've seen this year; that was some of the best TV I've seen EVER."

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on it for ya.

Well, it's gonna be a while anyways, since it's not somethin I am too interested in watchin when we got a real life version of Omar (Everett) on the loose and actively pot-shotting at the badges who blew his raid and rolled up his partner (Gibson), so you can imagine I am a wee bit soured on the idea of watching that right now....

I don't blame you for putting in on hold, The Wire puts Homicide to shame ugly-wise. Hard to have a warm, positive feeling for the human race after watching it.

Generation Kill was ok for a Simon production imo, which made it great compared to the rest of the wasteland. I preferred the book by just a bit.

Treme has some Wire & The Corner & Homicide alums fwiw:

Wendell Pierce > Bunk
Clarke Peters > Det. Lester Freamon
Khandi Alexander > Denise Francine 'Fran' Boyd
Melissa Leo > Kay Howard

Just like Baltimore I'm learning a lot about New Orleans.

Curl up in a ball bleak, yep, I've seen it. That show and The Wire (and just getting older) kind of destroyed any notions I had about "What a Great Country!"

With me, ironically, it sparks a desire to stop the cycle, to break the chains, and really helped me understand the details of how they drag people into that cycle of doom.

The Wire did touch on it, not as much as the other issues, but our Educational system is a big part of the problem, and that is our current focus, now that the hell camps are gone.

The better you understand a problem, the less effort it takes to subvert it, you see ?

Also worth remembering I lived on the edges of some of the real life happenings The Wire is based on, and so there's a bit of dark humor in it for me as well, Shorty didn't jump from no six stories up, it was more like two, into a dumpster, but that's hollywood for you.

That said, the copier-as-lie-detector incident DID happen, no shit, and that was funny as hell.
