Freedom is Important because People are Important

"Robert, Louisiana (CNN) -- Three attempts to pump mud and 16 tries to stuff solid material into a breached Gulf of Mexico oil well failed to stop the flow, top BP executives said Saturday, and engineers and executives with the oil giant have decided to "move on to the next option."

That option: Place a custom-built cap known as the "lower marine riser package" over the leak, BP chief operation officer Doug Suttles said. BP crews were already at work Saturday to ready the materials for that option, he said."

Hello,

Caught this on CNN. Glad to hear there's a more immediate alternative than 'August.' I wonder if this is like the 'hat' idea someone here had.

Alas, the last plan, the one that didn't work was my hat plan.

This one is something like this

Lower Marine Riser Package

It's so fucking obvious I feel like a moron.

Install an open pipe which has no resistance at all to the oil flow. Make sure that pipe has a shutoff valve capable of withstanding 150 atmospheres of pressure.
DOH!

Okay, that's a pretty obvious thing to do. Also, you could run a hose from it.

Houston, we may have an additional problem. It might have splintered and we may have multiple leaks, if this is a crack in the ground it's a more major issue. Can we go back to studying the problem? I know the media has been broadcasting this fallen pipe model. Id lie to believe it, but I need to know that it's true, and that its not a crack along the ground.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Haven't heard anything about a further crack, I sure hope that's not true.

CNN did a good job of simplifying the LMRP for me at least...the one thing I didn't like was the fact that it won't stop ALL the oil, just make the flow less. Plus, when they "saw" off the broken top, more oil may flow out of the unrestricted hole (tho' they say not much more, if any) until they can get the damned thing on.

Hey, one bit of sunshine: The Top Kill didn't rupture anything and make it worse, eh? Let's count our blessings, small tho' they may be!

I don't think it will cause more oil to spill when they cut off the broken pipe, I read it will increase the pressure. That makes sense, the angle will be direct. Still, any shutoff valve will be built to withstand the pressure, since that's what should have been there in the first place, that halliburton did not install.
