This helps explain you to me:
Quote:

It is a most basic human urge, the age-old, universal desire to overcome our limitations, to soar and to unlock superpowers hidden within us. Living out those fantasies is more popular now than ever before.

"Overcoming limitations", "superpowers hidden within us"...now I get it.

Here's some "real life" ones:

Real Life Superhero "DC's Guardian," who works for charities and patrols the streets of Washington, D.C

Real Life Superhero "Life," who hands out food and supplies to the needy on the streets of New York. "Life" tells ABC News: "If I see someone in need, I stop and help them … and then I'm up, up and away."

"Life": "None of us are ever going to shoot rays out of our eyes, and we're probably not going to fly anytime soon. But we can take justice into our own hands. We can help another human being,"

Real Life Superhero "Nyx." "I feel a certain degree of loyalty to every being that inhabits this earth, a compulsion to watch -- to help, to protect," says "Nyx" on her MySpace page.

Real-life superhero "Thanatos, the Dark Avenger". His primary focus is helping the homeless in downtown Vancouver. He watches over them and gives monthly handouts of food and supplies. He also fights crime on the streets, patrolling the neighborhoods and funneling information to the local police.

"Super Hero" helps the homeless in his community and does toy drives for underprivileged children.

"Dark Guardian's" fights crime, does charity work, goes on safety patrols, makes hospital visits, distributes flyers and helps the homeless. Dressing up as a superhero, he hopes to raise awareness of community issues and inspire others to get involved.

Maybe you should get yourself a cotume and go to work, Although that would take a lot more effort than posting videos and pictures of superheroes, wouldn't it?

On a more serious note; I find this interesting, and you'll note what they "do" under superhero guise...food for thought about our society mayhaps...

Hello,

This is the community forum, Niki:

Though I am careful about which personalities I encourage to join. This sort of thing can easily go south with the wrong sort of participant.

MINCINGBEAST

These real life douchers cannot be real life super heroes without real life super villains. Faceless calamities like poverty will not do. This is where I, Mincing Beast, come in. I swear, on the Devil's balls, to destroy all of these ridiculous would be do-gooders. By destroying them, I shall justify their miserable existence. Now that I have the location of their secret forum, all I need is a costume, and henchmen.

Perhaps I could interest you in a comprehensive package deal ?
http://www.villainsource.com/

But honestly, I think you're screwed, since these days even the Villains help the helpless, the hopeless, those left behind by business suit wearing "good guys" who steal more from them with a briefcase and a lawyer, than any costumed Villain could ever take - for they steal hope itself.

Of course, the best "costume" is anonymity itself, who even notices one more taxicab in a city, one more clerk at a grocery store, one more EMT at an accident, one more cop at a crime scene...

ETA: Disclaimer (of sorts) - I know Thanatos, he's a decent guy, if a bit wiggy.

I agree about the anonymity...while I applaud their good deeds, the necessity of dressing up to do them speaks volumes about the do-gooder. Not that I diss them for it, it just seems like an attention-getter, which kind of mitigates the intention...

Not sure what you mean, Anthony. If you're talking about HERE, things go wrong from the most innocent of posts, so there's no difference to me.

Hello,

There are two main reasons for the costumes.

One of those reasons is very much 'attention-getting.' LOOK! I'M HELPING! It's one way to wake people up out of their complacency and inspire them to do something different. Some charity/activist groups stage public events to build awareness for a cause. The Real Life Superhero community is a walking, talking public event that builds awareness constantly while they do what they do.

The second reason works on the psychology of the person wearing the costume.

Lots of people just can't see themselves going out and doing these things. They're not that type of person. They're introverted. They're afraid. They'd feel awkward and they'd be insecure when dealing with all that strangeness. But like an actor who only truly 'gets' the character when he puts on makeup, the RLSH can 'become' the do-gooder when he puts on his costume. Super-Joe doesn't need to feel afraid when he goes to the wrong side of the tracks. Super-Joe doesn't need to feel timid when meeting fifty homeless people. He can just smile and say, "Hi There! Here's a little something to get you through! Don't despair, lad! There's people who care!"

Okay, Anthony, I'll buy that. It makes sense. So I reverse myself; I give them unqualified accolades for DOING something, however they do, while the rest of us sit around and

My question at the end was what this reflection on our society means...something about people feeling helpless, disaffected, and it instigating them to do SOMETHING, however small...

Sorry, Wulfpuppy, your incessant videos bore me to death, so I rarely watch them. Don't really need to, know why they are and how you relate to them. As one of the biggest "bitch moan"ers here, it's amusing you post them, nothing more.

Actually, while thinkin on it, occurs to me I knew a guy who was doin somethin much like this back in the mid 80's.

"Tex" as they called him, did the whole costume thing to the point of almost parody, what with the cowboy getup, and he was REAL tall like 6"5' and lanky, so he was a pretty striking sight, and he did a lot of food drives, toy runs, stuff like that, so the concept is prolly a lot older than we think.

Very memorable to me, cause he was sooo big, and I was sooo short, yanno ?
